My two weeks volunteering on the island were unforgettable. First, the location: the island is about 15 minutes by boat from Aswan and right beside Philae Temple. It’s relatively small (you can walk around most of it) but offers spectacular views of the Nile. There’s even a small, partly submerged archaeological site that you can swim to, as well as other nice spots along the river for swimming. Regarding the work, in my case it was a mix of gardening and preparing the soil, plus helping in the kitchen during meal times (while I was there they were hosting seminars, so they needed an extra hand). The tasks were fun—sometimes hard work, but very rewarding. Finally, the host Chris was always kind and attentive, making sure volunteers were comfortable, had plenty of food (most meals were the same as what the guests had, and they were delicious), and that we were enjoying ourselves. I would definitely love to return to the island to see how it continues to grow and change, because I’m sure it will only get more beautiful with time.

These fine couples stayed with me for 16 days. Everything went very well with food (me not being vegetarian), work, sharing the bathroom and the social interaction. Dana and Dominik are super polite and meet life and tasks with a smile and good humor. I was away on work most days and also a short holiday abroad. I left feeling very confident they would care for both home and pet🙏🏻. Under their steady hands my hall walls and doors finally turned into the right shade of pink. I thoroughly enjoyed their good spirit and also their love and respect for each other. Wishing them the best in future life!

I came in mid-August and immediately felt welcomed into their gorgeous home. Kei-san is caring, will make you feel completely at home, and an incredible cook. Simon gets things done efficiently, has a lot of knowledge, and is a wonderful conversational partner. The children are always a joy to be with, and we have shared many great evenings together. Last but not least, Claus, one of the most charming dogs you will ever meet. I will definitely miss him! I was also fortunate to meet and say goodbye to his mother, Heidi, who was equally charming. Thank you so much for the wonderful memories and valuable experiences. All the best!

We spent two weeks with Rob, Carmen and their little one Ender in their beautiful mountain village and honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our families clicked straight away, the kids are the same age, and we all just got on so well. Their communication is so clear and straightforward, which we really appreciate, and it made organising work and daily life together very easy. We ended up doing almost everything together, cooking, eating, going for walks, trips into town, even an amazing hike and lunch in Bulnes. Titus worked mostly with Rob on projects to make life easier for them during the house renovation, building temporary wooden stairs to replace a ladder and putting together a temporary outside shower, as well as land management tasks. They worked really well as a team and had a lot of fun problem solving. Even though the house is mid-renovation, they gave us a really comfortable room and bed, and the view of the mountains is just breathtaking. Jesse and our toddler Gabriel spent lots of time with Carmen and Ender, walking the land, cooking and cleaning, chatting about life, playing, and bonding over our shared love of crochet and knitting. The two dogs are super calm and gentle and the three cats are beautiful and friendly. They also invited us along to their village fiesta and introduced us to neighbours, which was such a lovely way to feel part of their community. Rob and Carmen are truly some of the most open, warm and welcoming people we’ve met while travelling, we’d massively recommend them to other Workawayers and will definitely stay in touch, we already planned our visit for next summer with them!

Britt was our second host and so different from the first one. We visited her for around two weeks. First of all, Britt is a such welcoming and interesting woman and gave us so much. Thank you for this 😁 And her home is so unbelievable, her house is beautiful and so cozy, it felt like home, we could relax there and there was never a split second of the feeling of beeing unwelcome and as if it was not allowed to act like at home. The time we spent with Britt was mostly in the afternoon or evening because she was working. We ate dinner together, talked and some days we played a little bit of rummy. We had nice conversations about many topics. And it was so interesting to listen to her knowledge about forestry, hunting and moose. The nature around her place is awesome as well. We set ourselves a daily challenge to walk the steep road to her house down and up and during this we could enjoy the forest and will maybe see some deer or foxes. When you are a lucky one you will see moose. There was a variety of work to do. We did some painting jobs like painting the frames of the windows inside and outside, that was very meditative for us. We cooked and cleaned for sure and also cleaned the windows, which was very time-intensive because the house has many windows and you need to clean them inside and outside😄 In our second week at Britts home, we did petsitting and homesitting during her holiday. During this time she gave us some jobs, but not too much and there wasn't pressure to do everything in this time. We also could make our own schedule for the work, so we had enough time to enjoy the nature and the good weather. And we looked after her cat as well, the little sweet lion😻 So the time at Britts place and the time with Britt were so nice and we think we could get the best view into the norwegian lifestyle and nature and wouldn't miss one second of our time with Britt. Hopefully see you again. We wish you the best. Dana & Dominik

It was a real pleasure hosting Rikke. From the very beginning, her communication was clear, friendly, and reliable, which made coordinating her stay and daily tasks easy and enjoyable. During her time with us, she proved to be both practical and resourceful, contributing across a variety of maintenance and general upkeep tasks. Whether it was small repairs, painting, or helping to keep things running smoothly, she approached every job with care, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. Her helpfulness extended beyond the specific tasks, as she was always ready to lend a hand wherever needed. Equally important, she was a genuine pleasure to have around the house. Respectful, considerate, and easy to get along with, she quickly became part of the rhythm of our home. Her good humor and thoughtful nature made everyday life brighter for everyone here. I would highly recommend Rikke to any future host. She brings not only useful skills and initiative but also warmth and positive energy that makes a real difference. We would happily welcome her back anytime.

I originally came to Felix’s place mostly because a good friend of mine was there—not because I was actively looking for a Workaway. But what was meant to be a short visit turned into a much longer stay. Felix has a wonderful way of welcoming people exactly as they are. It’s honestly hard not to feel a deep connection with him. Conversations flow easily because he’s genuinely curious and interested in so many things, so there’s always something to talk about. Instead of writing yet another review about the stunning views and the beach nearby (which are, of course, amazing!), I want to highlight something else that really stood out to me. While Felix usually looks for help with the house and garden, he was completely open to alternative arrangements. I work in the digital field, and it was such a joy that he welcomed support in this area as well. His flexibility, combined with his incredibly kind and funny nature, made it impossible not to stay longer than planned. Felix also welcomed my dog with open arms and was there for us during some difficult times—something I’ll always be grateful for. Thanks to him and the wonderful flow of people coming and going, the whole experience felt like being part of one big, weird family. I now consider Felix a true friend and can’t wait for the next time our paths cross. If you get the chance to spend time at his place, don’t hesitate —but be prepared to stay longer than expected, just like I did!

We are very grateful for the time we spent with Türkan, Veysi, and Yaz. Although it was not quite two weeks, we felt very much a part of their family by the time we left. Our days often started with gathering figs, then breakfasting together, sharing Türkan’s delicious cooking. We helped with everything from cleaning to cooking to childminding to gardening to building a stone wall (something Nicholas had always wanted to learn -and Veysi was a patient teacher and a strong model), and had some great fun outings and walks in between, including meeting some wild pigs at the beach (they were quite different to the kind of wild pigs we have in Aotearoa, we were relieved to learn!). One of the things we really valued about being with this family is how open and honest they are, in sharing about the things that are important to them, from the personal and immediate to the wide and historical. It was a very interesting and heartmoving time for us all.

We spent a week with Angie and Howard, helping in the garden, cleaning, and doing general housework at a relaxed pace. They were generous hosts, always offering help if we needed anything. The meals were delicious, and our room was comfortable and private. I especially enjoyed our evening conversations, hearing their travel stories and recommendations. I’d happily recommend working with them to other Workawayers.

I had a wonderful stay at Gypsea´s place and enjoyed my time there a lot. I felt very welcome - Gypsea is very lovely, warm and caring and made sure I felt comfortable and good at her home. We worked in the morning, had delicious healthy food and many enriching conversations. The place is located in a beautiful area. There is a lot to discover in the afternoon and Gypsea has lots of great tips on where to go. It's worth having a car with you to explore the beautiful mountains, the area of the river Ebro, go hiking, walk along the coast or simply go for a swim in the sea and enjoy the beautiful beaches. Gypsea thank you very much for the beautiful time together ❤️

I was staying with Tarja for about 3 weeks and I had a great time! Tarja made me feel like I was part of her family and was overall a very friendly and open-minded person. Beside the tasks, I had a lot time to enjoy the nice nature, the surroundings and in general the quietness. It was a wonderful experience and I would recommend it to everyone, who wants to get away fron there everyday life :)

I spent two weeks at Heyner's and his family's home and had a wonderful time here. Everyone in the family is incredibly welcoming, warm and open and you feel right at home. Working with the goats, cutting grass for them and all the other tasks were so much fun, you're out in nature all day long and feel truly part of the farm. This really is a special place in the middle of the jungle with all kinds of animals (adorable dogs and your own house cat!) as well as beautiful, native plants. You'll have great food, great company and a perfect opportunity to learn Spanish!

We had a brilliant time on Kos, working with Marion and Kuldeep. They are very caring and generous hosts, not only feeding us really well but also taking us around the island to beaches and sites of interest, so we got a good taste of the place. They struck the right balance of being available for interesting conversations about philosophy and feelings, with giving us space to relax and drop into the restful vibe of Kos. It was very interesting learning about the Sikh religion, for example, and about a refreshing approach to dealing with death. We loved the sunsets and sunrises, the swimming, and the quiet. We also enjoyed being able to bring our creativity to their home: it was quite a treat to be able to paint mandalas together. Marion and Kuldeep are having a fascinating journey through life, and it was a privilege to share that and learn with them.

We spent almost 10 days with Ervin and his family. From the beginning they clearly communticated everything and the work was organised good and fair. Our main task was sanding and painting the fence and two small doors- so not too difficult :) The area there is pretty nice where there is a lot to discover (beaches, waterfalls or cute villages) Unfortunately, public transport barely exists but luckily they provided us a car (and bikes) to discover the local area. The holiday apartment which was given us was comfortable. Ervin and his family were always open for chatting and Puma (the cat) was always open to receive cuddles. We both can really recommend this place- nice people, the beach closeby, easy work and nice accommodation. Just make sure to have a car/ driver's licence and that you are able to handle the kinda old car. Wish you all the best and hope to see you again!

I stayed for three weeks at this workaway, I believe it is the most I have learned over such a short time period in my whole life. The team are fantastic, despite regular having volunteers come and go, they are always happy to talk about their experiences and knowledge of the reality faced by asylum seekers in France. Jed especially is an inspiration, who has gone out of his way to learn Kurdish to better communicate and support the people passing through. Every organisation supports asylum seekers slightly differently, but I really respected the teams humanistic approach to their work, on days where we had time we would chat and occasionally play dice with people in camp. The place even had some long standing relationships with members of the community who stayed their permanently, individuals who would support the team by bridging language gaps and providing extra support (and even invited us to their delicious pop up restaurant once). The volunteering team was also lovely, a great bunch of people, some of who Ive stayed friends with even after leaving. Thank you so much for providing me with the opportunity to provide this important support, the experience has deeply shaped my world view, and your committed team has inspired me to continue working with asylum seekers back in my own country - I wish you all the best in the future
