Pauline

This was my very first Workaway experience. And it was... just amazing! Nadine, Tong and the staff on site (Chua and So) have been so helpful and friendly with me. And also all the other volunteers I met there too. It's a place where you quickly feel at home and it was hard to leave it. At the house, you have to teach classes in the morning and/or in the evening and you really come in contact with the students from the surrounding villages (Ta Van and Lao Chai). They are young adults, so respectful and so motivated to learn English! I learned a lot from them. During the weekend the house is filled up with children, bringing their lightness and joy :) I'm truly grateful to have been able to experience this. Thank you! Andrea

Fernando and Andreea were with us for their first Workaway experience. They were not used to doing the kinds of tasks that we needed accomplished yet were willing to tackle whatever we asked. Sometimes the tasks changed day by day from what was originally planned, but they were flexible. They seemed to appreciate learning new skills like using various power tools and were open to trying new things. While with us, their English fluency increased and they even learned some Hawaiian. Fernando and Andreea were a lot of help in moving many lava rocks to even out areas of land. I (Dottie) enjoyed working alongside them. We had some large, raised garden beds that had many roots growing up from the bottom and impeding the soil. Fernando and Andreea stuck with it and dug out and moved all the affected soil. We felt confident in sharing our space with them. We knew they had our best interests at heart. They took care of our chickens as their first task every workday was to feed them. They have a huge love for cats and our 4 cats could sure tell. The couple were often found scratching the neck or petting one of our furry creatures. Our cats loved being around them and would follow them when they were working on the land. Fernando and Andreea are kind, and thoughtful with wonderful senses of humor. They often were quick with a smile and we so enjoyed sharing funny stories and laughter with them. They were gone a lot mostly the whole week-end exploring the island when they were not scheduled to work. On one occasion they joined us for a Family Game Night and Dinner. We really enjoyed their laughter and wonderful sportsmanship. We recommend this couple together or individually!

Minori was an absolute joy to host. From the moment she arrived, she brought warmth and a genuine love for connecting with our family and children. She quickly became part of our daily rhythm, joining in with laughter, conversation, and care. She shared her culture beautifully through food, preparing incredible Japanese meals such as fresh sushi and a savory ginger pork dish (生姜焼き定食). She also surprised us with a creamy egg pasta carbonara that quickly became a household favorite, and handmade dumplings that were both comforting and delicious. Each meal was prepared with thoughtfulness and skill, turning our table into a place of cultural exchange and joy. She even introduced us to matcha tea and cakes, adding another delightful layer to our culinary experience. Minori didn’t hesitate to help with hands-on tasks. She even joined us in painting our new fence, turning it into a cheerful and productive afternoon. We had many engaging conversations at the table — open-minded, thoughtful, and full of heart. Hosting Minori felt like welcoming a friend, and we are truly grateful for the time we shared. Any family fortunate enough to host her will gain not just a helper, but a deeply enriching presence. See you soon.

Cheryl and Brooke are some of the most AAMazing Workawayers ever! They are each exceptional workers, mature and confident individuals always willing to tackle whatever we asked. Both of them are talented and innovative self-starters. They arrived soon after our adult son that lives nearby, was taken to the hospital by ambulance and spent the next 10 days in ICU. That meant we were not around as much as we normally would have been. They just said, “we got you” and got to work. They also took initiative to complete some tasks that went beyond expectation. The feeling of being overwhelmed after an ankle injury kept me (Dottie) behind in work and then extra time spent traveling back and forth to the hospital dissipated as the tasks were getting done by this awesome twosome. Both Cheryl and Brooke are quick learners. They took on tasks that they had never done before. One was some drywall mudding that Cheryl completed for us on some shear walls. A bonus to that was a wall ready for Brooke to paint a mural. That mural is absolutely gorgeous! Both are smart, talented, and oh so very kind and thoughtful. We loved talking story and learning about and from them. They were always quick with a smile, and we so enjoyed sharing funny stories and laughter with them. A gift they gave to us before they left was a scavenger hunt on our land paired with mementos of things we had shared with them. Cheryl and Brooke fit in well with our family and friends on several social occasions. We really enjoyed having them join us at "Family Dinner & Game Night." They are excellent cooks and shared healthy homemade dishes. They invited our 20-year-old granddaughter to join them on some adventures on the island. She loved the time spent with them. Their faith in God is evident as they certainly “walk their talk.” We and our family enjoyed and valued the life stories they shared with us. There is so much more we could say, but we’d have to write a book! We highly recommend this dynamic twosome together or individually!

Yassie is a sweet, young woman with a lovely girly energy—full of cute ideas and a gentle, sometimes shy charm that makes her really endearing. I remember one time she was standing in the kitchen waiting for her food to cool down instead of joining us at the table. When I asked, she admitted it shyly, and I quickly helped her bring it over. She’s just too polite to ask for help directly, so hosts might want to check in gently and often to make sure she’s comfortable and has what she needs! She has a great sense of humor and is always happy to answer questions or chat when you start the conversation. The kids were quite energetic and often tested boundaries with her. Yassie is still building her experience with young children, so she sometimes found it tricky to redirect their behavior effectively or set firm limits in a way that worked for them (she mostly tried gentle reminders like “if you hit me again, we’ll have to go home”). Yassie is naturally a quieter, more introverted person, so conversations didn’t always flow super easily. She’s not the most confident or experienced with childcare yet, but she’s a genuinely nice, thoughtful young woman with a warm heart, and she’s planning to stay in Taiwan to teach English. If you’re looking for someone relaxed and sweet to practice conversational English with , she’d be lovely for that!

Ester is one of the kindest, most genuine, and big-hearted people you could ever host. She is always thinking of others and eager to help in any way she can—whether it’s with the children, daily tasks, or anything around the house. She truly gave so much during her 15-day stay and helped our family enormously, yet she often lacked confidence in herself, worrying that her English wasn’t good enough or that she wasn’t contributing enough. It made my heart ache to hear that, because she was already far more than enough. I believe that in our home, through our warm and chaotic daily life, she was able to heal a little part of her inner child that may not have always felt fully safe or valued. It was a privilege for us to provide that space for her. Her patience with children is exceptional. Even on challenging days when our son Volvo was extra mischievous or our daughter Remi cried non-stop because she wanted me, Ester stayed calm and used gentle, positive parenting approaches to talk them through it. She has deep experience with kids—you can tell she truly understands them. One day I felt completely overwhelmed and ashamed in front of them: the kids were clinging to me, acting out to get attention , and I couldn’t manage work or meals properly. I broke down in tears right there. Ester and Milan brought a puppet to cheer me up and told me they wished I could be their mom. I cried even harder, but their kindness gave me incredible strength. They are truly beautiful souls. Don’t worry about her English—she says it’s not good, but I understood every word and every feeling she wanted to share. Her communication is clear, warm, and straight from the heart. Milan could only stay a week due to an ear infection and work commitments, but even while resting in his room, he was wonderful. He spent time drawing with Volvo, creating special moments . Ester (and Milan) are the kind of workawayers every host dreams of—thoughtful, hardworking, patient, and deeply caring. We miss them and feel lucky to have met them. I wholeheartedly recommend them to any future host. They will bring warmth, joy, and genuine connection to your home!

Andiamo!

Nathalie is simply one of those amazing people who show up in your life and helps whatever you were working on attain a new level. Her commitment and energy is unparalleled, she is full of ideas and - which is not always the case - full of the commitment to see them true too. She has great ideas when it comes to getting your message out there, through social media, writing, or just being out there taking to people about what it is you do.. She will be a hundred percent into whatever she sets her mind too, and if she has shown interest in workawaying with you, that commitment is already there with her! She is communicable and always listens well. She loves art and all means of artistic expression but also social interaction, farming, nature, growing sustainable stuff, meditation and a hundred other things. If she has asked me to sum her up in one word, I would have said "COMMITTED".

We had an amazing experience at Jacques and Juliana's farm! They had such a great vibe, always joking, and their kid Benji was adorable! The communication about organisation and work was very fluid. We mainly helped on their cob house project (painting, floor, windows...), which was interesting and fun, and occasionally we fed the baby cow. We stayed in the cute pink house, where we had our privacy, a cool kitchen and a beautiful view. During the weekend, we really liked that they invited us to a bbq party at their friends'. Thank guys you so much!

Ryan, Emma and the kids were so much fun to be around and made us feel really at home. We had such a lovely experience helping them with the sheep, gardening and looking after the little ones. We stayed in their newly finished vat shed which was super comfy and had our own kitchen, bathroom & living room space which was lovely. They gave us veggies from the garden, meat from the farm as well as all the other supplies we’d need to cook our meals. Thank you so much for having us!

I volunteered with Corinne and Wayne several years ago on their previous property. I stayed about four months with them through autumn and winter, working with the horses, the garden … Although I have not yet visited their new place, I can say, that the two of them are the greatest hosts I volunteered with. They have become good friends and we still keep in touch. I cherish all the great memories I made with them, game nights, great dinners, excursions into nature… Corinne is an amazing cook but I remember her also being very happy when others prepare meals. I learned a lot about natural horsemanship from her. Wayne was always good fun to work with, I remember us doing some little renovations together. I do miss our deep conversations. I can’t recommend the two enough as hosts and can’t wait to visit! All the best, Silvana

Georgia and Brett stayed with me for over three weeks and they were really wonderful guests. They were some of the most considerate workawayers I've ever hosted, giving attention to household chores and the little things that would make any host happy to welcome them back into their home. They have a great work ethic and never shirked hard work even when the weather was poor. Their skills were broad and ranged across cooking, gardening, tree planting and management, building, and animal wrangling. Even my dog Willow thought they were great. I was particularly appreciative of their consideration for my personal space and general wellbeing. In short I would be happy to host Georgia and Brett again anytime and I can strongly recommend them to other Workaway hosts.

Joana and Maria came for ten days and we had a really nice visit. They communicated very well prior to arrival. They both spoke really very good English. They arrived on time and were completely charming to have on the ship as guests. They were very keen to work and learn and although neither of them had building skills in any depth we spent all of the work periods building stud partition walls. Timber framing and placing of plasterboard sheets. I found them to be completely determined to do the best they could, even though the task was challenging and due to my situation I was not able to communicate everything they needed to know. I suspect they would be excellent at their work in any situation. I wouldn't hesitate to have them visit again. My thanks to them both.

Antoine could stay with us only few days before Christmas but didn't hesitate to help so much that the results of his work seems what other times could have taken so much longer! Sweet hearted and beautiful soul to share our days with, we were delighted to host you and we hope to have you here again one day!

I had a lovely time at Urian’s home. I mostly helped with the fireplace, taking care of the dog, and cooking. I really enjoyed the nature! There was a lot of snow while I was there, and it was beautiful. ❄️ It was my first time heating a house only with firewood, and it was quite a bit of work… but once I got the fire going, it was fine. I hope to see you and Olush again. Maybe in Italy? ☀️ I wish you all the best and, most importantly, good health and inspiration for your art journey. ✨

Great experience with Emil and Lasse! They are wonderful guys traveling with a camper van full of carpentry tools and lots of knowledge. They are professionist and they helped me a lot with my tiny new house, they made so much good work on the roof and in every single idea of this building. Thank you guys 🙏💗
