Beschreibung
We are a family of three, sometimes more when you add in transient friends and family. We live on a beautiful and secluded 20 acre property. It is a sunny south aspect with a stunning view. We like to play, fish forage, and farm. Our property serves as the local ski hill in the winter and we are attempting to be a self sustained farm in the summer. Between the trail building, gardening and animal care we are pretty busy most the time and could sure use a hand!

We are a family that subsists off the land, we fish, forage and live off the land as much as possible. If you are interested in what life is like in Alaska then this is a great place to visit. Hard work is part of our way of life whether we are collecting wild greens, building garden beds, milling lumber, logging, fishing or any of the other great things you can do in an Alaskan summer. Any workaways that come here will be welcomed as part of our family, they will learn how to cook wild Alaska cuisine, smoke fish, preserve food. In the winter we do alot of snowy outside activities and ski and snowboard everyday.

Arbeit
We would like a hand with daily chores(caring for critters) up to 4 hours of work a day. There will be days you can have off we usually are flexible and live according to the weather! We will provide lodging and meals and transportation. Attitude is most important and we would prefer people with some previous workaway experience. Be prepared to be outside most the time and physically capable to do gardening and animal care. Majority of work will be based in the garden and for those that exhibit the right mind set there is opportunities to mill lumber.

There are a few options for accommodations. We have a camperised bus, an RV. There is limited cooking in your accommodations and a full kitchen for eating family style in the main house. Lots of camping options and space and a kitchen to make your own meals.

There are many beautiful sights in Haines in fact it is one of the most beautiful and sunny places in Southeast Alaska. There are many mountain trails, access to the ocean and trails right out our back door. Our property is 35 miles out of town and we will provide opportunities to go into town or on other adventures. It is worth mentioning that Haines is not an easy place to get to and before you commit to the idea of coming here go online a research h the journey. Once you get to Juneau you travel here via ferry or a Alaska Seaplanes which has a fleet of small airplanes. If you are still up for the adventure and not daunted by the travel then contact us and we will see if you would make a good fit!

Rhianna’s Roost in the upper Klehini Valley is Eden. There are 7 foot high fields of fireweed all over the property, the property also doubles as a ski hill, jurassic kale and cabbage in the garden, and a jungle of fresh herbs in the greenhouse, which made for delicious salads every day and garden pizza night was always fun. I even got to make a… read more dessert pizza with leftover dark chocolate dessert dip and wild harvested berries. Even more Jurassic is our friend Steve’s place which we spent a fair bit of time at, but I won’t spoil the surprises in store there.

It’s not always rainbows and sunshine, (although it usually is, and we’re spoiled with the best weather in all of Southeast Alaska there.) and it’s not for the faint of heart either. De-quilling one of the dogs was a regular occurrence, and Boots the dog is famous for eating a face full of quills quite regularly. There are also a lot of meat chickens that still need to be slaughtered as of the time I write this. They lived a good life, and you can taste that in the meat. But that’s the beauty of life. You get the good, the, bad, and the ugly.

My days started, waking up in the bus on a grounding sheet, finding the drill, feeding and watering the bunnies with fresh greens from around the garden, feeding the chickens, and feeding the goats fresh alder greens.

The missions were nonstop. There was always something awesome to be doing. My one complaint? Not enough time in the day to do it all. Fishing, volunteering for the amazing community in Haines, foraging for berries, valerian root, arnica, seaweed, goosetongue, and all sorts of other goodies.

Sean Dogg taught me some very important life lessons, that I have a lot more to give, when it comes to cutting firewood especially, and that I have to want it.

Rhianna had lots of firsthand knowledge and experience with foraging that I would have never otherwise had from foraging books, which I had the opportunity to read a lot of, Rhianna has a great selection of them.

They sent me off on the Ferry to Prince of Wales Island with a bag of delicious smoked salmon that Sean Dogg taught me how to make perfectly.

I am blessed to have had the privilege to leave behind a legacy of white paint, gravel, and a bunch of frozen of chicken wings, and I hope to return one day for the winter so that Sean Dogg can teach me how to ski party.
