  Calling all animal lovers! Come make a real difference in the lives of rescued animals at our nonprofit farm sanctuary in beautiful south-central Pennsylvania.
  
  No experience is necessary—just a genuine love and respect for animals, a positive attitude, and a willingness to help.
  
  We are an animal rescue and farm sanctuary in Andersontown , Pennsylvania, where 50+ rescued animals call our sanctuary home. Depending on when you visit, you’ll share your days with an assortment of rescued farm animals as well as dogs and cats who live inside our home.
  
  This isn’t just a place to stay while traveling. You’ll become part of the daily life of a real sanctuary and have the opportunity to form relationships with animals who depend completely on the humans caring for them.
  
  For the right person, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
  
  🐾 WHAT LIFE HERE IS LIKE
  
  Animal care is the most important part of what we do. Once you’ve learned the routine, the animals need to be let out, fed and watered by 8:00 a.m. at the latest. Earlier is perfectly fine; later is not. The morning routine generally takes only about 30 minutes.
  
  Beyond daily animal care, there is always something happening at a sanctuary. We are continually caring for the property and the animals’ spaces and finding ways to make sanctuary life better for them.
  
  Depending on the season, weather and current needs, you might help with things such as:
  
  * Animal care and enrichment
  * Cleaning and tidying animal areas
  * Gardening, weeding and general outdoor help
  * Keeping animal areas and the property clean and organized
  * Seasonal sanctuary projects
  * Helping us create enrichment activities for the animals
  * General day-to-day help around the sanctuary
  
  You do not need any special skills or previous experience. We’re happy to show you our routine and how we do things here. Willingness to learn, reliability and a good attitude are far more important to us.
  
  What matters most is that you are self-motivated, dependable and have a “can do” attitude.
  
  ❤️ THE ANIMALS COME FIRST
  
  This is extremely important to understand before contacting us.
  
  Our home is our sanctuary in both meanings of the word. It is our personal place of peace, but it is also quite literally a sanctuary for animals who needed somewhere safe to spend their lives.
  
  We maintain a relaxed, friendly and respectful atmosphere, and that respect extends especially to the animals.
  
  There is zero tolerance for being unkind or disrespectful to an animal.
  
  You may never be rough with an animal, yell at them, call them names, intimidate them or treat them without compassion.
  
  They depend on us completely for love, safety, food, care and support. If you’re the kind of person who understands that without needing it explained, you’ll probably fit in very well here.
  
  🏡 OUR HOME & FOOD
  
  You will have a private bedroom in our home on the sanctuary property. We may have other sleeping arrangements available when necessary, and we normally prefer one Workawayer at a time, although hosting two may sometimes be possible.
  
  One bedroom also has an attached workspace, so we can accommodate digital nomads. We have plenty of property and space for campervan parking as well.
  
  We provide self-serve breakfast foods and will provide or cook together at least one meal each day.
  
  Our meals are mostly plant-based because one of us is vegan/vegetarian, so meat, eggs, cheese and other dairy products are limited. If you don’t cook, we simply expect you to help with cleanup and dishes.
  
  We have dogs and cats living inside our home, so you should genuinely enjoy sharing your space with animals.
  
  🌎 CULTURAL EXCHANGE
  
  We have lived throughout the United States as well as in multiple European countries. We love meeting people from around the world, hearing about their lives and cultures and sharing stories and experiences.
  
  We’re also happy to help someone improve their English through everyday conversation.
  
  Possibly the greatest part of the exchange here is something that’s difficult to put into words: getting to know individual rescued animals, earning their trust and realizing that the things you did during your stay genuinely made their lives better.
  
  Some Workawayers come for a relatively short stay. Others have stayed for months and become part of our sanctuary family.
  
  🗺️ YOUR TIME OFF & EXPLORING
  
  We’re in south-central Pennsylvania, with parks, hiking, nature and plenty to explore throughout Pennsylvania and the surrounding states.
  
  We’re within traveling distance of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC, and New York City is only a few hours away.
  
  When our schedule and the needs of the animals allow, we’re willing to help you get to some areas and experience more of the region.
  
  The sanctuary needs help year-round.
  
  If you prefer certain weather, usually March 20 through November 15 is warmer with little likelihood of snow. From approximately November 16 through March 19, expect cooler weather with the possibility of snow.
  
  Good-weather days and weekends are particularly valuable for outdoor sanctuary activities.

  ⚠️ PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US
  
  We have hosted Workawayers for several years, and experience has taught us that being completely clear with each other from the beginning makes for a much happier experience for everyone.
  
  The following are not suggestions. They are our house rules and expectations.
  
  If any of them are a problem for you, that’s completely okay—we simply aren’t the right Workaway match for each other.
  
  We would much rather discover that before either of us makes travel plans.
  
  HOUSE RULES
  
  1. NON-SMOKERS ONLY.
  No smoking of any kind, indoors or outdoors. This is a 100% smoke-free property. One of us has asthma, and we both find the smell of smoke on clothing or a person intolerable. Please do not request to stay if you smoke.
  
  2. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF.
  Our home should remain clean and free of messes. Clean up after yourself and keep your bedroom and bathroom clean and fresh.
  
  3. GOOD PERSONAL HYGIENE IS REQUIRED.
  Please bathe regularly, wear effective deodorant and keep yourself, your clothing and your living space clean and fresh. Cultural expectations around personal hygiene vary around the world, so we are stating ours clearly rather than assuming everyone has the same expectations.
  
  4. FOOD AND DRINK STAY IN THE KITCHEN/DINING AREAS.
  We do not eat or drink in bedrooms or living areas.
  
  5. RESPECT OUR 10:00 P.M. (22:00) QUIET TIME.
  By 10:00 p.m., everyone goes to their separate rooms to relax, watch TV or sleep. There is no coming or going after this time because it disturbs both the people and the dogs. If you want to go somewhere independently, we’ll coordinate plans so they work with the needs and schedule of the sanctuary.
  
  6. NEVER BE UNKIND TO AN ANIMAL.
  Always treat every animal here with love and respect and make sure they are well cared for. No yelling at them, insulting them, intimidating them, being rough with them or treating them without compassion. This rule is absolute.
  
  7. COMPATIBILITY IS IMPORTANT IN OUR HOME.
  If you support or share any of the same beliefs or values as Donald Trump, this is not the place for you. We will just not be compatible with each other.
  
  In this house we believe in equal rights for all, we believe in women’s rights, we believe in equality, we believe in documented history, we trust doctors and we believe in science, medicine and vaccines.

  🚭 A FEW OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
  
  No partying and no drugs.
  
  Limited alcohol is okay. One of us does not drink at all, and the other drinks occasionally.
  
  Please don’t come intending to spend your entire stay glued to your phone. Of course you’ll use your phone and have your own downtime—we simply want Workawayers who are present, engaged and interested in participating in sanctuary life.
  
  Our schedule is flexible in many ways, but caring for living animals isn’t optional or something that can simply be postponed. Morning animal care needs to be completed by 8:00 a.m., and we especially appreciate volunteers who are available to help on good-weather days and weekends.
  
  Days off are absolutely part of the experience and can be coordinated with us so the animals always have the care they need.
  
  🐐 WHO WILL LOVE IT HERE?
  
  You may be a great fit if you:

  You don’t need to arrive knowing how to run a farm sanctuary. We’ll teach you.
  
  Bring kindness, reliability, curiosity and a willingness to help.
  
  In return, you’ll have the chance to live among rescued animals, learn about sanctuary life, experience our part of Pennsylvania, share cultures and stories with us, and—most importantly—leave knowing that your time here directly helped animals who needed you.
