Beschreibung
Hola! We are Ed (Canadian) and June (British), living in the beautiful countryside 25 minutes from Sucre, Bolivia. The land measures 10.5 acres and has 360 degree views of the Andean mountains. We were backpacking through South America when we landed in Sucre, Bolivia, fell in love with the Colonial city and the surrounding countryside and decided to relocate from France.

June is a writer/property developer and Ed a project manager/constructor. We built our home from adobe and stone and ran it as a boutique hotel for four years before changing course to create a small urbanisation, selling plots of land to people wanting to live in the countryside.

We have been hosting Workawayers since June 2010 and have enjoyed sharing travel stories over meals, teaching each other new skills and in many cases making lifetime friends. We have new and exciting projects continually emerging and would like to invite workawayers age 25+ to help us for 2 weeks or longer. The work is mostly gardening and general maintenance but there are opportunities to learn building in adobe and mosaic work.

We love enthusiastic and creative helpers who are physically fit and ready to tackle anything that needs doing. An ability to function independently when not working is also essential.

We have a 15 year old Siamese cat called Sumac which means handsome in Quechua, the local indigenous language, who will take any amount of love from anyone who stays with us. We also are custodians of 8 hens - all of whom are called Henrietta as they all look the same!

We enjoy sharing stories of our 15 years living in Bolivia and of our travels in other countries. We can help with navigating the Colonial city of Sucre as well as Potosi and Uyuni.
Arbeit
We are looking for 2 workawayers at any one time (couples or 2 friends) age 25+ with basic English and some Spanish, to help us with gardening, organic farming, land-clearing, fencing, greenhouse-building and irrigation. People with experience in these areas are particularly welcome as are volunteers who are happy to do general maintenance, painting and general upgrading of building structures.

Daily hours vary but do not exceed 25 a week. We try to give volunteers two consecutive days off each week to allow for an overnight stay in Sucre or to visit Potosi, the highest city in the world.

Breakfast and lunch (the main meal of the day in Bolivia) are provided on the days you are working but not on your days off. An evening meal is not eaten in Bolivia and if required is the responsibility of workawayers - there are several cheap local shops nearby selling everything you would need for basic meals and snacks as well as fast food options in the evening for around $1 US.

Unterkunft
Our volunteers are housed in a room in a group of buildings close to the main house. There is an adjacent bathroom with a hot shower. There is also a kitchen where you can make tea/coffee and snacks, including breakfast. Workawayers are expected to respect these spaces regarding tidiness, cleanliness and hygiene.

There are beautiful walks from our property with stunning views of the Andes mountains. You can also walk down to small shops and snack bars nearby for a cold drink at the end of the day. Colonial Yotala is a 45 minute walk away or a 10 min bus ride, with shady plazas and a lively Sunday scene with a chance to try the famous Yotala roast pork.

The colonial city of Sucre (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is accessible by regular daytime mini buses, stopping a 15 minute walk from our property. There are plenty of museums, bars and restaurants and some interesting nightclubs should you wish to stay in Sucre on your days off. Potosi, the highest city in the world, is a 3 hour bus ride where you can take a tour of the mines and visit the Money Museum. Tarabuco is a small rural town with an indigenous market every Sunday - a good place to buy weavings and other souvenirs.

Thank you for your feedback.
Yes, your opinion is personal and subjective and we are sorry that you felt it imperative to display it here - "we like to be honest" - when you could have been more honest with us about how you felt during your stay. As you say "this place is what you make of it" and if you compare your… read more experience with that of our other volunteers over the past four years you have to wonder why yours alone was so unsatisfactory.

Because of the long list of grievances you feel compelled to air after volunteering with us we feel obliged to respond to each accusation so that future volunteers have a balanced picture of what to expect here.

At the time you were with us we were very busy in our hotel including a period of 9 days of back-to-back guests. We made it clear on your arrival that, unfortunately, with the upcoming workload which for us meant working from early morning until late at night we would not have as much time to spend with you socially as we would have liked. You did not identify this as being a problem and said that it was great to have your own space to relax in after being on the road for so long and that in case you had to do a lot of updating of your blog. Yet now you say that you missed any kind of personal interest in you from us. We invited you to dinner with us early on in your stay exchanging stories about our travels. We made lunch to share with you on three occasions (and made special vegetarian meals as one of you was not keen on meat) when we were guest free and again shared stories and experiences. We also invited you to a barbecue evening with our guests during your stay where you were included in the conversations. We invited you to Tarabuco Sunday market for the festival of Puljay which we have visited many times with guests and volunteers but that we wanted to share with you. This took the best part of the day and we thought we had a great time with you talking and eating together. These are hardly the actions of hosts not taking pleasure in sharing our space, time or food and we cannot believe that in all the time you spent with us socially and working together that you didn't get to know us.

You say that we were helpful in "some ways", mentioning getting in touch with the mechanic. The full picture is that we took our caretaker away from his work with us to go to the mechanic to find out what parts were needed for your vehicle and sent him to look for the parts with you in the city as they were difficult to find. We purchased fuel for your vehicle so that you did not have to pay tourist prices. We loaned you a computer and DVDs so that you could watch movies in the evening. Oh and we taught you how to do mosaic work.

We did not consider either of you to be particularly flexible or lovers of change. Although we warned you that every day was different here I felt compelled at the end of the first week to ask you how it was going with you as we had had so many misunderstandings. You both said that we told you to do things one day and then not to do them the next day, and that you had worked in hotels previously without any supervision where there was a system, a regime. I reminded you that our hotel was guest driven and all activities and meals were done on guests timing so you had to be prepared to be flexible and to respond to change in a positive way. I thought it might be a problem with language as I communicated in the same way I have done with volunteers over the past four years and had never been told I was unclear or experienced such conflict. Yes you received positive feedback for your work but reacted very argumentatively when we pointed out mistakes.

The meeting I called after 4 weeks was to discuss changes in strategy with the imminent arrival to the hotel of a family including two young teenage girls. It was not a meeting about problems with either of you but you didn't listen to what was being said and felt under attack without any justification. I resented your reaction Carolin which was extremely aggressive and called Ed into the meeting to try to resolve the problem. He failed to do so and had to give you, Carolin, a picture of your arrogant behaviour. We concluded by asking you both if you were happy working with us as it seemed not to be the case. You assured us that you wanted to stay and that you enjoyed the work but this is now shown to be untrue. Saying that you didn't want to let us down is also doubtful as your attitude Carolin following the meeting was cold and impolite, refusing to reply to good mornings from Ed or I and working with the minimal interaction with us. We felt uncomfortable around you and bewildered that you saw fit to behave in such a way in our home. Additionally, we had two volunteers anxious to come as soon as possible as their Bolivian visas were expiring at the end of April but you both insisted that you would like to stay for the extra week. That doesn't equate with the statement that you were not sad to leave and in retrospect it would have been better all round if you had gone sooner.

We told you over and over again that your work during your stay here was fantastic because we like to give credit where credit is due. And it was the truth, we did appreciate your work. We only wish that our impression of the overall experience at the end of your time here had come closer that of our other wonderful volunteers over the past four years. And as for your observation of lack of recent feedback from volunteers on Workaway, we have plenty of personal emails from recent ex-volunteers, some of whom did not come through Workaway, that we would be happy to share with anyone thinking of coming to us.

Ben and Sarah were welcome volunteers in the early days of our project. Ben's skill as a tree surgeon came in particularly handy helping us to train the few unruly trees on our land. They also worked hard on starting the foundations for the toilet/shower block, helping to upgrade the volunteers' campsite.

We really enjoyed having Alicia to stay with us. She was very enthusiastic, digging ditches in the hot sun and making adobe bricks. She really surprised our Bolivian workers with her soccer skills - they had never seen a woman playing football before! An excellent all round volunteer.
