    2019 update:

We`re starting to get closer to a finish on our viking-styled "Hobbit-House"! It`s more like a gapme or a viking house, but we have combined different techniques. There are also roof windows and there will be solar panels on the roof, we are using what we find!

We need people for digging peat and cooking! If you are interested to get a taste of living in a camp in the forest, you are invited to come!

Just take a look at the profile if you are interested!

    ... Info ....

We`re are currently on our fourth year of our project! Our project is to build a old-fashioned Gapme-hybrid - a building technique used for thousands of years in the north but combined with some modern customizations. Among other things we will include roof windows and solar panels.

The building uses whole wood and peat, the part of the soil held together by grass, for insulation. It`s cool in the summer and warm in the winter, like a cave. We have a camp-site where we try to enjoy the best of modern conveniences, like music, tents with oven, and just try to have a good time. I have also installed a battery and solar panel, so you can surf the web, recharge computers and phones, etc. I also have plenty of tents and hammocks and sleeping bags etc.

I use to say that building a gapme is crappy work, but a good hobby. So we try to do it for the learning, the exercise and the coming together, and to do it in short bursts and have fun in-between. We relax in the shade, that trips across the bergs and mountains, and row in the beautiful water by the hut, that`s connected with another, greater water that is 40 km around.

You will learn something about building stuff with whole wooden logs, and the stuff involved. You can even put up the whole structure without using a single nail, even though we didn't do that. I also know a bit about the process how the vikings put up their (similar) houses. I am mostly a historian, not a carpenter, but it`s a lot of fun facts.

As I said, we to a great degree enjoy the social side of this. The work is rough, or tedious, so we even it out by laughter or having a good time. I am interested in all aspect of old times, norwegian and local history. There`s a lot of funny stories about how they used to do it in the old times around these parts, or around the viking age. E.g., did you know that the vikings try to make a kingdom outside Jerusalem? Or that one killed his friend, because "he had such a good angle for a chop." Etc etc.

There`s a lot of different work.

    - We also appreciate help from some-one to be a cook, or just keep the oven/fire going and the likes.

    - We are lifting and cutting up peat. Peat is the top-most soil, held together by plant roots. You cut it up and make it dry. Afterwards we`re lifting it unto the wooden structure. The most manual job. Good exercise, and you learn to work smart not hard. If not you`re used up in ten minutes.

    - Carpenting. People with hammering skills are always appreciated.

    - Social people. Good people are always appreciated - whatever you like to do. We like to have friendly people around. I`m more of an academic myself, so I always enjoy having someone to talk to about the historical, philosophical and ecological sides of the project.

A small workmen's hut. A military tent 8-man size with oven. 1 blue camping tent ~ 8 sq meter. Many small tents.

i also have poles for a really big Lavo! ~5 meter long! I need a tarp for this!
I wish to put up this or fix some other kind of structure this summer!

We also have a camp-site for sitting and burning etc with semi-permanent roof.

There`s a fishing water here. Also a big water - 40 km across, just next here. You can borrow my boat and go fishing. Or you can walk in the mountains. There are some beautiful sights around here.
