I have recently taken over an established, off-grid, homestead that's part of a land co-op of 200+ stunning acres in the Slocan Valley, southeastern British Columbia.  Situated in a mountain valley near Valhalla Provincial Park, there are endless outdoor opportunities and lake/river adventures.  I am looking forward to sharing our tranquil and independent lifestyle in exchange for working on projects at our home. I (Lisa) live here with my 2 children, Koda (13) and Django (11) who are here half time.

We wish for our visitors to experience the peaceful quietude of this retreat and independent lifestyle in connection with the land. The Slocan Valley is home to a diverse community of independently-minded perspectives with a strong history of self-reliance. People are open-minded and accepting.

There is a variety of help that would be welcomed here, depending on what needs to be done, the momentum of the season, experience and interest of travellers. There are several carpentry projects like deck building and creating overall improvements in addition to the general maintenance needed. The garden is big and wonderful and in need of tending and enhancing with permaculture techniques. I also need help with video production.

This place offers a beautiful retreat location that feels very remote but is actually about a 12 minute drive to the village of Slocan. The access is a well-maintained forest service road to our long community driveway (in the winter at least an all wheel drive vehicle is needed). The cabin is nestled in the woods on the edge of the meadow. There is a loft bedroom, a woodstove, a propane stovetop and wifi. There is an attached, small building that serves as an outhouse. We currently use the bucket system for composting humanure, you will be responsible for your own composting and I will show you how. There is enough power for some lights and devices but not enough for a toaster. Our home yurt is located nearby but the spaces are relatively private.

You will be independent in the sweet cabin and need to be responsible for preparing your own meals. it would be lovely to share meals together as well. You will be welcome to garden produce as it is available and pantry items.

This valley is surrounded by accessible mountains, lakes, creeks and hotsprings for day and overnight excursions.  Slocan Lake and the mouth of the Slocan River is a 12 minute drive from here. There is an old rail line converted to a recreational trail that runs alongside the full length of the Slocan River in the valley bottom. Little Slocan Lakes are not far away in the other direction.

Kootenay rideshare is a great way to get here from afar. I can usually make arrangements to pick up from drop off points and for Mountain Man Mike's bus service. There is a public bus that goes up and down the Slocan Valley and to Nelson and Castlegar.

Hitching is a also a way to get up and down the valley but arrangements will need to be made for transport to the homesite from Slocan. I do travel to and fro the homestead but it sure is great if you have your own vehicle to enjoy all of which the area has to offer.
