I had an amazing month with Lisa, Julian, and the cats Thomi and Holly!! I was their first Workaway volunteer and they made me feel very comfortable from the minute Lisa picked me up at the train station. Communication before I arrived was great, and we had weekly meetings during my stay to make a schedule for the next week's tasks.
I mostly
… read more worked alone during the daytime and did indoor household tasks such as preparing dinner three nights a week, vacuuming and mopping each level of the house weekly, and cleaning the bathrooms weekly. I also helped to feed the cats and clean the litter boxes.
I was there from the end of June to the end of July, so there were also garden tasks at that time which included weeding the small garden, and picking several different kinds of berries from various bushes.( A small cherry tree too.) Additionally, I would take organic food scraps to the chickens and once during my stay I mucked out the chicken coop. Lisa would help me in the garden when she was available and was very kind and flexible with the timing of the tasks.
Lisa and I spent a lot of time in the kitchen and from her I learned a lot about German food! I also held a small luncheon one Saturday where I cooked for a large group of their family and friends. I made Tex-Mex chili con carne, cole slaw, and sweet Southern corn bread for everyone!
I was always invited to local events and made friends with the neighbors who also included me whilst I was there.
Lisa and Julian both took me shopping on multiple occasions to the supermarket, the butcher, the pharmacy, the bank, and the beer shop.
In addition to the household tasks, we spent a lot of time speaking English together and did a good language and culture exchange together.
Lisa showed me how to make cassis from the berries we picked, we prepared cherries for schnapps, and she taught me about beeswax candles. She also taught me how to make authentic German potato salad! Every Friday, we would walk across the street and go shopping at the organic produce market and get the veggies for the week. While my diet was not quite as healthy as theirs, they had no problem with me buying things for myself and cooking them. I enjoyed my kitchen chats with her a lot.
I can't tell you how amazing this couple truly is and how much I loved my time with them.
Julian took me beer shopping and taught me about German beers. We also had a lot of really good conversations about world issues.
Their home is absolutely lovely and I had my own private bedroom with a large comfortable bed, nightstand, and beside lamp with extra outlets for charging all my devices. The wifi in the house is very good and I was able to work online and stream movies in my free time.
The bathroom I used is on the same floor as the bedrooms but it was only for me, as they used the larger one downstairs. The bathroom was very clean, nice, new and has a sink, toilet, and glass door shower with both rainshower and handheld spray.
The food they provided is top tier, high quality, organic food. As I said before, they had no issue with my buying a few "treats" for myself and cooking them in their kitchen (spicy hot wings comes to mind!). I always felt welcome to cook for myself while they were at work and if I had any special ideas for our group dinner,s they always tried to accommodate that.
I always felt welcomed and cared for - not something you always get when doing volunteering - but Lisa and Julian are very special people. If you want a true Bavarian experience with wonderful people in the countryside, this is the place for you.
Easy to get to from Nuremburg by train (approx 1 hour to Ansbach station.)
I'm trying not to leave anything out -- the first week I arrived it was incredibly hot in Germany and I had trouble sleeping. Lisa 's mom let me borrow a tabletop fan for my bedroom and it honestly made ALL THE DIFFERENCE !
Fabulous place, fantastic people. Five stars! Thank you so much Lisa and Julian!Chatte mit Workawayern, die diesen Gastgeber besucht haben
