Hello,

We are a young family of four living on the country side outside of Berlin. We moved here from the city a year ago and have not regretted it since. Christian (27), Alexandra (34) and two kids Rio (5) and Donna (2 Months). We also have a dog and two cats (cats living outside). Christian is a carpenter and is working on tiny houses on our premises at the moment. Alex is a trained prop-maker and on the weekends she is a working in a club in Berlin. She also works at a local project across the street as part of the management-team. But at the moment she is on parental leave as we just had a baby.

We would describe ourselves as outgoing and unconventional. Alex is into meditation, yoga and any form of personal development. So if you have any skills she would be happy to learn from you. She is part of a course in non-violent communication at the moment. Christian loves music and djs as a hobby in his free time, so if you want to nerd out on music - he is happy to do that ;) We usually cook vegan or vegetarian but Christian eats meat now and then.

The house we bought was built in the 20´s but unfortunately it was renovated in the 80s in the typical GDR-style so we are trying to renovate it to make it look a bit more natural again. We have a barn in the back which will be turned into a workshop and maybe in the future into another apartment. The house is sitting on 1ha of land with a small veggie-garden (we are beginners). There are two circus caravans which are owned by two families living in Berlin and coming to Drahnsdorf on the weekends.

We live next to the local project who also have a lot of workawayers so you will be able to connect with them. We speak English, German and Swiss-German :) We are happy to help you learn German. Christian is a carpenter so you can work with him and learn a lot about working with wood.

The area we live in is near the Spreewald:
The UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve is a unique cultural and natural landscape with numerous hiking and cycling trails. The real beauty of the region, however, lies in the widely ramified network of rivers that you can explore on a punt trip or individually on a canoe tour The Sorbs/Wends belong to the Slavic tribes that settled in the Spreewald in the 6th century and are still inseparably linked with the region today. For many holidaymakers, this is first reflected in the bilingual signage, as the Slavic language has survived in the region to this day. About 60,000 people of Sorbian origin still live in the Spreewald today, some of whom still speak the Sorbian language.

Also Berlin is an hour away by car. Unfortunately , the train that usually goes from Drahnsdorf to Berlin is being repaired until November. But we are happy to help you get to the next train station which runs to Berlin in 45min. Both of us have worked in the night life of Berlin, we can make many suggestions :)

Arbeit
At the moment we have a lot of tasks to do on our barn. The previous owner left a lot of stuff and to be honest we have also dumped a lot in there. We want to make the barn in to workshop spaces so the first step is to clean-out all the spaces in the barn and then to organise them appropriately. We will order a container to throw out a lot of stuff. So it´s quite hands-on tasks. We have some rooms which need to be painted and renovated as well as different wood-work in the garden e.g building a terrace. In spring we are looking for people to help us with the garden as we are still greenhorns when it comes to growing our vegetables. This year we had quite a lot of veggies tough :)

I am sure we will also have other stuff to do but at the moment this is the main task. You must be okay living with kids and maybe help with them now and then.

Unterkunft
You will have your own room and a small toilet to share with another workawayer if you are more than two. Shower, kitchen and living room are shared spaces.
Was noch ...
There are a few small interesting towns near by to explore. Of course there are many forests to go on walks. There is a bus running that you can call and it comes to pick you up, which is quite handy. But we will let you know about the area and what to do around here.
