Volunteer Roles
We are currently looking for volunteers for the spring and summer of 2022 (from March 2022 onwards) - please contact us if these dates are suitable for you!!.
We have accommodation available for workaways for March & April, however beyond this all of our accommodation is full, so we are especially interested to hear from workawayers who have their own van or who are happy to camp on our camp ground.
We ask Workawayers to commit to stays of 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks, ideally starting and finishing on a Sunday. If you are looking for a longer stay, please let us know - we may have a perfect role for you.
We are an Independent Hostel and not for profit charity run by a small, friendly team of staff of all ages, managed by Tim. The hostel is set in 17 acres of grounds overlooking Derwentwater, and has woodlands, a large lawn and its own waterfall with a hydro-generator. The hostel is a charitable trust, and any profit that is made is ploughed back into refurbishing the 230 year old Georgian Mansion, as well as providing grants for disadvantaged children to stay here.
Every day at the hostel is varied, with all sorts of guests staying, such as school groups, walking, running and other adult groups, families, and people staying on their own. We get visitors from all over the world. People come to enjoy the landscape, for educational reasons, or to take part in outdoor activities.
Above all we are looking for volunteers who love to meet new people, work hard and have a passion to explore the Lake District. It is a perfect cultural exchange. In exchange for your help we will provide food and accommodation and the opportunity to work with and meet new people, and discover the culture and rich environment of the Lake District.

In exchange for your help we will provide food and accommodation and the opportunity to work with and meet new people, and discover the culture and rich environment of the Lake District, with the opportunity to walk and explore the hills and valleys. The Lake District is a World Heritage Site and there is so much to explore and do.
The Workawayers will be asked to help 5 hours a day for 5 days a week which may include weekends. There is some flexibility to the times of help, and this can be discussed once an application has been received. A minimum commitment to helping of one week is usually required, along with a flexible attitude.
A reasonable standard of English is needed as none of us speak any other languages well, but we are used to having foreign helpers and are patient with those keen to learn our language.
The help which is required will be varied, and may include any or all of the following: Cleaning the hostel, deep cleaning of rooms, painting, decorating and general maintenance, gardening, basic administrative tasks, sewing. No previous experience is needed, but if you have any particular talents we can use, they will be put to good use.

A room in the hostel may not always be available, so we are very keen to hear from workaways who have a campervan or who are happy to camp throughout their stay with us.
The vibrant town of Keswick is only 2 miles away and has many bars, cafes and outdoor clothing shops, as well as a few quirky tourist attractions. The Theatre By The Lake puts on many fine plays and other events, and there are always at least 2 recent films showing every week at the Keswick Alhambra Cinema.
There are plenty of stunning walks for all levels of fitness to go on, straight from either the hostel or Keswick town. The Lake District National Park is a huge area for exploring, either with a car, public transport, on foot, by bicycle, or by boat on some of the lakes. In the winter there is a chance of snow, which can make things very exciting.
Staff are sociable and will be willing to ask Workawayers to accompany them on walks, nights out, etc. We also have a vast amount of knowledge when it comes to what to do in the local area.

We are particularly keen to hear from workaways who are travelling with their own campervans. We have large grounds, which give a lovely place to park up, and to live, for the duration of your stay with us. Please let us know you have a van when contacting us.
