… read more incluida su hermana. También me enseñó aspectos de la agricultura local, como los árboles frutales. Compartimos momentos muy especiales bailando juntos, una pasión que tenemos en común, y tuve la suerte de iniciarme en la lengua catalana.
Además, realizamos un intercambio lingüístico muy enriquecedor: yo le ayudé a practicar un poco de francés, y él me ayudó con el español. Las comidas compartidas y nuestras conversaciones abiertas sobre España, los idiomas y muchos otros temas hicieron que esta estancia fuera aún más significativa.
Recomiendo esta experiencia con todo el corazón a cualquier voluntario curioso, con mente abierta y con ganas de vivir un verdadero intercambio cultural.

One wall is an actual part of the mountain, it's incredible that you can actually touch the stone, so you're literally living with nature around you. Aitona is a quit small town, and a very unique. The house is spacious and has a nice earthly feeling, since it is made of stones and, during the warm days, keeps the heat away.
The conversations we had were very interesting and I've learned a lot by listening to his life experiences and his other Workaway experiences.
He enjoys spending time outdoors, which was great and he included me in his daily and social life. We visited his family in Girona, his two girls are amazing, we went to the beach and we did a bit of hiking.

We came to Francesc's family house in the town of Aitona one month ago. I was depressed and anxious at that time, but I got better and better in the arms of orchards, hills and riverside and sharing precious time with our friend Francesc. We were
… read more very lucky because we came during Easter time and spent more time with him because he was free of work, otherwise, he is very busy. This Easter was the most spiritual one for us. We got into deep conversation early on, shared our life stories, and spoke about our values, history, politics, family, and relationships - we have experienced a cultural exchange in each sense. We understood what it means to be Catalonian and how is Catalonia different from Spain. Francesc showed us orchards, taught us about trees and spoke about his farmer ancestors. We went together to see Lleida Cathedral La Seu Vella, the dominant and pilgrims' destination. We saw the Good Friday procession for the first time and then Francesc explained to us other traditions, and we ate the typical easter cake together. We tasted many more typical meals like grilled vegetables, mussels, roasted chicken, tomato bread Cuban rice and the best ham. We created our community and spent almost every evening in conversation, serious but also humorous. Francesc introduced us to his lovely friends, and we went hiking together and danced the bachata and salsa. Thank you - Joan, Marie Angels and Nati for being nice and friendly to us. We met a lot of kind people in Catalonia. Francesc made always sure, that we feel good there, he was honestly interested in our well-being, asked us about our families and friends, and was always willing to help and support us. He even waited in the train station to pick us up twice (after his exhausting working hours), when we faced difficulties with transport during our weekend trips. It was like a beautiful dream. Upon my arrival by bus in Lleida he met me at the bus station and then drove me to his town of Aitona. His home was simple but had all the necessities for a comfortable stay. Francesc let me stay in a private bedroom equipped with a

Nearly every meal I spent eating with Francesc, and sometimes also with his daughter. I enjoyed learning from Francesc how to make simple Mediterranean food, such as salads and Sanfaina (Pisto). And, of course, conversing with Francesc made the meals all the more special.
On one afternoon, Francesc's daughter walked with me in the nearby peach orchards and gave me an expert commentary on local agriculture, because she is an agriculture engineer.
One Saturday, Francesc and his daughter took me to the Pyrenees mountains where we undertook a 26 km hike in the scenic area of the Circo de Colomers. … read more Lleida, and we headed to his tiny village, Aitona.
Coming from Madrid, Aitona was a stark contrast. Firstly, he lives in Catalonia where they speak Catalan. Secondly, and lastly, Aitona is TINY. If you're looking for quiet and solitude, this is the place to come. Though it only takes 20 minutes to get to Lleida by car, it takes an hour+ to get there by bus. So get used to staying put.
Francesc's place is beautiful! It's built into the hillside and is 3-stories tall. He has two rooms for you to choose from. There's one that share's a wall with the hillside, and the other that shares the quiet street. I opted for the street view, because it had a window to let in fresh air. Though, during the day, I had to keep it closed because he had "brick-layers" who were working on the house the whole time I was there! It got pretty dusty and hard to breathe, and it was noisy but not unbearable. The bedroom was comfortable and I was happy to have a private room to myself! The bed wasn't comfy and I had a hard time getting comfortable, but it's a safe, quiet and substantial. Every night I was there, Francesc cooked us dinner! He always beat me to it, too... I wanted to cook for us but was never thinking about it before he was. He'll say that he's not a good cook, but he surprised me!
His sister and his two daughters came by over the weekend I was there. He has a beautiful, kind, generous, and funny family! I went on a walk with his sister and she helped me with my Spanish, which I appreciated since that's why I'm in Spain. I also got to go on a few walks with Francesc, and he showed me the town farms where we ate fresh almonds, walnuts, and figs!
Everyday, for about 2-4 hours, I spent with Francesc helping him with his English. He's at an intermediate level, which shows. There weren't many times that I needed to correct him. He's eager to learn and it shows. It was very easy to do this exchange with him! He was also so sweet and played Spanish Trivia Pursuit, so I could practice my Spanish.
Francesc is such a sweet man. He's a very simple man. And he's very content. I really enjoyed my week-long experience with Francesc at his beautiful home, in his quaint village. Marianne is a kind of lovely talkative woman with a large intersting, sometimes fun history about her family. I really appreciated it that she was incredibly patient and enthusiastic teacher with me.

Bhalaam is the best phytotherapist that I've ever known, she brought a variety of new smells with her plants , infusions and oils, which made me feel as I was in another exotic place. I had a fantastic time listening her while she was reading a chapter of ¨The Book Thief¨, and at the same time she was explaing me the meaning of different words
