Hello everbody!

Coming to my organic tannery in Austria. is a natural and primal experience.
As far as I know, I am the last of my kind in Austria, that only uses bark and water to extract tannin, that tans hides into leather. I only use bark from european trees like oak, willow or spruce for this. Naturally this means, that I don’t use any chemical, synthetics, poison or chrom-salts at all. Instead my ingredients, apart from water, are lime, vinegar, bark and oil, and nothing else.

Many of my hides are saved from going directly to the waste bin, as so many hides today are just thrown away.
A tanning cycle lasts about 4-6 weeks, that’s why I recommend you to stay that long.
What you tan by hand aside from my batch, is yours, and you may take it home.

Just to make things clear - I am a one-man-band and you do not replace a paid worker.
It is a pure and straight volunteer experience.

If you help me you will learn:

- how to tan by hand, so that you can continue tanning back home too
- how to dehair, flesh, tan, soften hides to make leather
- how to tan with normal machines available everywhere (e.g. washing machines)
- how real tannery machines work (the main work you will help me with)
- see products made of rawhide and/or leather like drums, jackets, shoes, trousers, rucksack, purses and many others

You have your own space in a separate house on the farm, your own sleeping room, bathroom, toilet and kitchen. You will be fully provided with food, and I usually cook once a day. I want you to cook too, though, or help if you can't cook.

We live next to a forrest with alot of local plants. Next town is 10km away. Usual work time is about 5 hours a day, every 4th-5th day is free.

I've spend about seven weeks at rici and alex their place. I had a good feeling from the first day on. And I can tell you- once you're there, you don't want to leave anymore. Haha.

I helped with tanning, sewing and a little helping hand with the harvest.
The two will give you space in private area and work area.
There are no fixed structures in everyday life, you are doing what is coming up on that day.

The food is very good. Alex makes good dishes and Rici is awesome in cakes and stuff. If you need something, just let them know, they'll make sure that you are not going to starve and will help you with other things. Rici and Alex are also grateful if you are cooking once at a time and they're interested in new dishes from other country's.

They have a big family and someone is always visiting them. Its really nice and fun when someone is coming around.

Burgenland is a beautiful area. Very rural, a few few mountains, on the border to Hungary. And it takes one or two hours to Graz or Vienna by car.
But without a vehicle you are kind of “lost”.
On the other hand Rici and Alex will take you to the market on Saturday, let you experience the jummy taste of “Langos” or they'll take you to the lake during summertime. They also took me to Vienna once, when they had an appointment in the city.

There is wifi, making phone calls is a little bit difficult. If you have a problem with insects and spiders, you will get over it, here. I had a free therapy, haha.

Rici is very open and caring, a strong woman -the soul of the house. She knows a lot and does a lot. She loves her coffee in the morning while taking a walk in her garden. She can teach you a lot about plants and things. And no puzzle or sudoku is too difficult for her.

Alex is really in his world at their place. He will teach you the art of tanning like at a serious education. But very easy and kind. Practising is the key. He will share his knowledge with you and his trust. He has ideas and tries always to improve his products.
I am a tailor and Alex gave me material and freedom to create new things.
He supported me when I wasn't patient with myself.
