My name is Mohammed Domayan, I have grown up in the wilderness of Wadi Rum. I have the privilege of owning a desert camp made from traditional materials and catering for every kind of traveler on every kind of budget, from adventurous backpacker to adventurous families! I'm also doing different kinds of tours with tourists - hiking, scrambling, jeep and camel tours.
Offering some of the most extraordinary desert scenery you'll ever witness, Wadi Rum is the definitive highlight of any visit to Jordan. This area - made famous abroad by the exploits of T.E. Lawrence ('Lawrence of Arabia') in the early 20th century - proudly boasts a myriad of moods and dramatic colours, dictated by the changing angle of the sun. Nature's gift is our gain, with the finest climbing, hiking, camel riding, horse riding, jeep, photography and meditation options known to the Middle East. In addition, a sunset, sunrise and the explosion of stars to be seen to be believed.

Travelers will learn and live the desert life in one of the most beautiful places on earth. You will learn about the history of the Wadi, the traditional ways of living in the desert and the many stories of the Wadi Rum desert. You will learn about the unique geology of the region and meet and live with the locals. In addition you will have all the Bedouin tea you can possibly drink!
Arbeit
I can host you with (Accommodation and food) in return for help with web-design and other internet related tasks, and also to improve my English! In addition I would like volunteers to help teaching English to the kids of the village. There might be additional tasks coming up depending on the guests we have in the camp. You might be asked to help out with the tourists. I love to chat with new friends over endless cups of Bedouin tea.

In the free time volunteers can enjoy the beautiful desert. You can do hiking, climbing, scrambling in the nearby mountains and you can join on tours in the desert whenever there is extra space. It is also a good opportunity for volunteers to practice Arabic and engage with the local community.

Vom Workawayer (Yusha) für Host

My overall experience with Mohammed was incredible. He was a superb host, consistently making sure my basic needs were met and accounted for.

My work included cooking/ shopping; helping with tourists in the camp; helping Mohammed with his website and online presence and general camp maintenance. Whilst this was all very enjoyable, I did not get… read more a chance to teach beyond basic vocabulary to the camp chef, and the Internet was very limited - but these are very minor issues.

The cultural exchange was where this placement really shone. The landscape and general atmosphere of Wadi Rum was majestic, making even more tedious tasks enjoyable. The hospitality shown to me by Mohammed, his family and the rest of the Bedouin was outstanding, and I felt like a member of the family almost immediately. I was privy to this very special way of life in a way not many are, and this was a real privilege. Indeed, experiencing Wadi Rum and Bedouin culture as a worker and not just a tourist was remarkable.

I was able to practise my Arabic (the primary reason for me going) very well; the whole situation was incredibly immersive, and was exactly what I wished it would be. The beauty of this placement is that all of the Bedouin tour guides speak very good English, so I could ask them to say something in English if I didn't understand the Arabic. I stayed in the tourist camp every night which was fine, and was given plenty of food to eat and water to drink.

Mohammed's communication leading up to and during my stay was good, with consistently speedy responses and helpful advice for getting to Wadi Rum. If he was not in the camp during the day, I was left with the camp chef, Mubarak who I ended up becoming good friends with and who made me feel very welcome.

There are many placements in Wadi Rum desert, but I cannot vouch strongly enough for Mohammed's. Even during the height of Summer (an off-peak season for desert tourism) there were plenty of visitors, meaning I was kept sufficiently busy. As a host, he was superb, but the manner in which he invited me into his family was more than I could have ever asked for. His brothers, children and other relatives made me feel included in everything they did, making the experience one I will never forget.

I wish to visit again soon and would like to thank you again, Mohammed for everything you did for me during my stay!
