Beschreibung
We're António and Cláudia, and we live on a small piece of land in Gâmbia, near Setúbal, with our daughter and two dogs.
A few years back we both did courses in permaculture and organic agriculture. Not because we had a grand plan — more because we'd been feeling for a while that we wanted to live differently. The courses made things click. So now we're here, slowly turning half a hectare into something that can actually feed us.
We want to be clear about one thing: this is not a business. There are no paying guests, nothing for sale, no income coming from the land. Everything we're building — the vegetable garden, the chickens, the ecological systems — is for our own family. That's it. And that's exactly why we need help. We're two people with full-time jobs outside the property, with big ideas and not enough hours in the day.
If you're someone who wants to get stuck into a real project — messy, ongoing, genuinely ours — and learn alongside us, we'd love to hear from you. -

Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
For us, cultural exchange is about genuine connection — even if it doesn't always happen over a shared dinner table. We want to be upfront: we both work outside the property during the day, which means life here calls for a certain kind of person — someone autonomous, self-directed, and comfortable with their own company. We will be in touch at the end of the day and weekends.
That said, the exchange is very much real.
If you've read about permaculture but haven't had much chance to practise it, this is where theory meets soil. We've both completed courses in organic agriculture and permaculture design, and we're happy to share what we've learned — not as a structured course, but as something that comes naturally while working side by side. You'll see how principles like observation, zoning, and closing loops actually play out in a real project, with all the improvisation and problem-solving that involves.
We're actively building things from scratch — an evapotranspiration bathroom, a retreat space — and you'll be part of that process, not just a pair of extra hands. We explain the reasoning behind what we're doing, and we encourage questions. It's the kind of learning that sticks because you've actually built it yourself.
We're curious about people and where they come from — how food is grown, how land is understood, how life is organised in different parts of the world. Those conversations happen naturally, usually at the end of the day. We share what we know, and we genuinely enjoy learning from the people who come through. -

Arbeit
There's no typical day here, which is part of what makes it interesting. But here's what tends to come up:
- Garden & growing
We're building up our vegetable garden bit by bit. Preparing beds, composting, weeding, watering, planting — the basics, done properly and without chemicals. Whatever comes out of the ground feeds us, so it matters.
- The chickens
They need looking after every day. Feeding, collecting eggs, keeping things clean. It's straightforward but it needs someone reliable.
- DIY
This is probably the most interesting part. We're working on an evapotranspiration bathroom and a small retreat space — both built from scratch using ecological principles. If you want to understand how these systems actually work, not just read about them, this is where it happens. We work through it through it together, step by step.
- Thinking and planning
Permaculture is as much about observation as it is about doing. Sometimes the most useful thing is sitting with a map of the land and figuring out what should go where and why. You're welcome in those conversations too. -

Unterkunft
Your home base will be a private caravan, comfortably set up for one or two people — whether you're arriving solo, with a friend, or as a couple.
The caravan has a double bed and space to set up a second bed, making it a great fit for two people happy to share the space.
A fully equipped kitchen is at your disposal outside the caravan, so you can cook your own meals with complete independence and at your own rhythm.
A private bathroom with shower is available just outside the caravan — clean, functional, and all yours.
When you want to unwind, you're welcome to use the covered porch of our house, which looks out over the property. It's a lovely spot with Wi-Fi, a TV, and a small library — perfect for quiet evenings, reading, or staying connected with the world.
The setup is simple but comfortable, and designed to give you real independence in your day-to-day life. You'll have your own space, your own kitchen, and the freedom to live at your own pace.
We both work outside the property during the week, which means we're typically only around in the evenings and at weekends. Because of that, we won't be sharing most meals together. We will make sure that the kitchen is always stocked with food and ingredients so you can cook your own meals whenever you need to. It's your kitchen to use freely. On evenings and weekends, when we're around, things are naturally more relaxed and shared — but we don't want to promise a family dinner every night and then not deliver on that. -

The farm is just the beginning. Setúbal is one of the most underrated corners of Portugal, and living here — even for a few weeks — gives you access to things most tourists never find. The Arrábida Natural Park is minutes away, with some of the most stunning cliffs and crystal-clear beaches in the country. The Serra da Arrábida offers incredible hiking with views that are hard to describe. The local food scene is something else too — fresh seafood, the famous choco frito, local wines from the Setúbal wine region, and a food culture that is deeply rooted and unpretentious. This is a place where people still eat with the seasons and take their time at the table.
A note worth keeping in mind: because public transport in our immediate area is limited, having some independence in how you get around will help you make the most of everything the region has to offer.
Another note we want you have in mind:
We put genuine effort into preparing for each person who comes to stay — setting up the space, organising the work, and turning down other requests to keep the time free for you. For that reason, we ask that you only apply if you are truly committed to the dates you propose.
If something unexpected happens and you need to cancel, please let us know as early as possible. What we want to avoid is last-minute cancellations or simply not showing up — this doesn't just affect us, it takes the opportunity away from other Workawayers who could have filled that spot.
We believe that a good exchange starts with mutual respect, and that includes honouring your word. If you're not 100% sure about your plans yet, we kindly ask you to wait until you are before reaching out.
Thank you for understanding — and if you are ready to commit, we can't wait to welcome you! -
