Welcome to our homestead in Romania. In spring 2023 we welcome some help for building walls out of stray and clay.
We are Jennifer and Matias, parents to two kids, who live 2 kilometer dirtroad away from the next village. We need help in the garden, with animals, in and around the house and with building projects.
The land is home to 3 dogs, 4 cats and around 30 chickens which give us joy and eggs. In the future we would like to have sheep and a cow.
Our goal is to create a new better world and we start with ourselves.
Open and honest communication is important to us. You can have good, long talks with us. Especially Matias enjoys conversation about all kinds of topics, preferably deep ones. We love music and various (card) games. If you volunteer at our place you can have a fun time with a not too strict working schedule.
While travelling in our campervan in 2017/18 we got interested in living in a community, growing our own food and living in harmony with nature.
In May 2018 we came to the abandoned village Bratea as volunteers. Within the first week we decided to stay in the developing community which is like a small village with people that like and respect each other. There are different households in our little valley, some of them are also on workaway. Meeting other travelers and workawayers is very likely. We sometimes have dinner together or a campfire or help each other with bigger projects.
In 2019 we built our own house which is a small wooden structured cob/slipstraw house. This year another building was started which has no walls yet. The last months that house was home to different volunteers.
You can choose to sleep in the loft or to put up a tent in a spot you prefer. We recommend you to bring your own sleeping bag as it can get cold in the nights.
We are living off-grid surrounded by nature. The electricity comes from photovoltaic panels, the drinking water from a well, the firewood from the woods. For washing we usually use rainwater or go have a dip in the lake.
Preferably you stay longer than just one or two weeks so we can get used to each other. Our experience showed that the first week with volunteers usually not much happens as we are getting to know each other.
This year we don't have a lot growing in the garden. The food comes mainly from supermarkets/markets. In general we learned that being self sustainable and therefore growing enough food takes some time and experience.
Tasks for 2023:
- build clay walls
- create a new sitting area
- dig (toilet hole, Walipini)
- collect firewood
- everything garden related (seeding, planting, weeding, prepare the greenhouse, prepare beds, ...)
- enjoy life

Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
In our valley we are like a small community, growing and developing. You can be a part of this and experience our way of living and helping. Most of the time there are travellers/workawayers in the valley (from my neighbours) so you can connect to others easily.
Since we learn as we go, we can only teach you what we learned so far but we think it's anyway much more important to learn from your own mistakes. So come, let's make some together and work them out to improve.
In our family we speak english, german, swedish, finnish and spanish. Other languages in the valley are dutch, french, latvian, russian and romanian. Any language you want to practice?Projekte mit Kindern
Dieses Projekt schließt möglicherweise den Umgang mit Kindern ein. Mehr Informationen findest du in unseren Verhaltensregeln und Tipps hier.

You can choose to sleep in the loft of the new building which does not have walls yet or to put up a tent in a spot you prefer. We recommend you to bring your own sleeping bag as it can get cold in the nights. Also warm clothes and good shoes would be preferable for autumn/winter/spring.
We can provide you a mattress and blanket, plus a tent if you wish. If the road is not too wet it is possible to get up here in your campervan.
We are living off-grid surrounded by nature. The electricity comes from photovoltaic panels, the drinking water from a well, the firewood from the woods. For washing we usually use rainwater or go have a dip in the lake. Our toilet is a compost toilet.
Electricity and Wifi are available in our house. Of course food will be provided. Was noch ...
We are in plain nature, no big streets nearby but many paths to hike!
In the village down the hill (2km) you can find a small shop, where you can connect to the locals or just spend some time off.
Twice a day there goes a mini bus from the village to Orastie, where you have more variety of shops and entertainment if you're looking for that.
Hitchhiking from or to Orastie is the easiest option.Etwas mehr Information

Although my stay here was very short, I´ve decided, nonetheless, to leave some feedback for Matias & Jennifer.
My idea was to stay longer, but, it ended up being just one week. The sudden and unexpected heavy rains made it impossible to do any work outdoors, and, at that moment, there were no tasks to be done in the… read more

They are motivated, creative and can work on their own.
The food they made was awesome too! :) Thank you guys for everything and enjoy your journey.
She got along well with our little daughter and helped with other tasks. Sadly the weather was not the best to work more outdoors.
We wish her all the best. :relaxed:
