Jacob stayed for approximately 4 weeks (Nov-Dec 2024) and worked in my garden clearing weeds and cutting back undergrowth which unfortunately I had let get away from me due to personal circumstances.
Jacob works well when given very clear instructions and once he acclimatises to the Australian way of doing things he will be an asset to the host.
… read more In some instances he was over confident and missed listening to instructions. This will improve with more experience in Australia.
He also had the opportunity to help on shearing day which is always a very busy and hot day with very few breaks which I think he found a bit challenging.
I think he is probably better working in a non agricultural host and will fit in well in the future.

… read more weekends Nerida used to give me a lift to Canberra where I could meet up with friends but I was always happy to come back to her farm in the middle of nowhere. It's absolutely mindblowing that Nerida runs the farm all on her own with only causal help from friends and workawayers. When I was there I did mostly gardening work which was totally fine and not too hard. I remember Nerida and me sitting on the couch in the evening, watching some typical -australian TV shows and eating sone typical australian ice cream. It really felt like home! Whenever Nerida had to drive somewhere I could go with her. I've got an unforgettable impression how country life can be, visited beautiful little townships with very special shops and nice cafes and I met a lot of her very nice und interesting friends.

our initial plan was to arrive on monday but due to some problems we were a few days late but we were in contact with nerida and she told us it was no problem. … read more farm in the dark without reception and we didnt find it, so it caused us to be one extra day late. When we arrived on friday in the morning we were set to work immediately, Simon helped a friend of nerida while I was set to pick up small stones from the street and also clean the garden for dog poo. When I asked her if there's anything else to do, she said no I can just play with the dogs. unfortunately nerida had a stressful week and the communication was not the best, she forgot to tell that the gates were supposed to be closed at any time, so I made a mistake. Nerida got very angry and I tried to make up with it by apologizing and trying to help her cook, but she didnt want any help and i didnt feel very welcome after this. She apologized her behaviour in the evening to Simon and told us she couldnt host us anymore due to unexpected guests arriving. Simon more than makes up for Elisa who I think would turn out all right with very strict instructions on what she needed to do and when. If you are on a farm please stress with Elisa how important it is to close gates.

That was good but on the other hand it was hard to find some activity to do in my free time. I couldn't leave the farm because it's too far away from the next town to walk and Nerida couldn't leave the farm because she had to feed her baby alpaca regularly. So I spent a lot of time in my room or was walking around her property, I have to admit I felt very lonely. If you like dogs and cats - there are four dogs and three cats to play with. This is a difficult review as I believe that had timings been better the experience would have been much more rewarding. Let me explain.
First; Nerida is a fine person and a gracious host. I feel we got on well in the times we spent together. There is the issue with this experience. Nerida was so (in my opinion) overwhelmed with her work that
… read more she spent just about the entire time working on her computer. As I was the only other person there it felt-at times-as though I was completely alone. I watched more movies in my three and a half weeks with Nerida than in the prior 8 months of traveling.
Again, I feel this may be a case of bad timing. When I first arrived (before Nerida's workload seemed to be a borden) she brought me into Yass for a festival and one afternoon she has me over to her daughter's home for an afternoon meal. During the time we spent together at dinner we also seemed to get on well though those times were brief (again, due to her work).
Overall, the tasks she had for me were not difficult and I was happy to help her in any way I could. It was a great pleasure to be able to give her a day off to visit friends in Sydney. Looking after the animals is a minimum effort and all the dogs and cats are fun to be around.

Johnny spent 10 days on my farm mainly planting trees with another helper. However, the crossover with the Australian helper was only 3 days.
At present Johnny's English needs improving but with time and experience he will achieve this. Because of this many tasks needed to be repeated many times and double checked to ensure he did understand.

However, he did get many simpler tasks completed such as weeding, clearing rocks and assisting with planting trees.
He needs to have many Western cultural norms explained and once you do that he is mostly OK.
