Animal lover/Vegan paradise!
This was my first workaway experience & I will not forget it for many reasons.
The work is challenging physically & mentally, esp if you haven't worked on a farm before, but so so rewarding.
Such a beautiful environment, a great place to slow down, connect deeper to nature & yourself on days off. Also a very safe
… read more area but transport is difficult if you don't have a car, the nearest shop is probably minimum 30 min walk.
The animals are free roaming, you are of course very involved in their care/lives and have the opportunity to build meaningful connections with them.
The volunteers stay in a 4 person bungalow so you have the opportunity to build close friendships.
Brad always brought us left overs from vegan markets he attended which was an epic bonus.
The days & tasks are very structured which is good because you are never left wondering what's on but if you work better in a more autonomous setting I wouldn't recommend.
I love this place and bring it up/recommend to almost everyone I meet.

As a volunteer, I was working three days and a half per week wich mean I had plenty of free time to enjoy the surrounding and to chill with the animals. There is no public transport around the farm and the only place within walking distance in the area is Dayboro. A typical day of work is from dawn to dusk with a lot of breaks in between. The main tasks are to clean barns and coops, to feed the animals, to give basic medication and to monitor the herd movements. Some tasks are a bit more physical than others but nothing unbearable. There is quite a lot of tasks to complete during the day but the application Asana reminds us what to do and when to do it, which makes things easier.
The bungalow welcomes fourth people at a time, there are two bedrooms with a bunk bed in each of them so the room is shared with another volunteer. The accommodation is comfortable and contains everything needed.

As others have mentioned, the working hours are long, from dawn to dusk on 4 days a week. The weekly workload comes to a total of approx. 40 hours, which can be quite intense. The work itself can be physically challenging but is absolutely doable with a normal level of fitness (which you will also improve during your time there ;-)) and there is usually enough time to finish all your tasks without stress.

Truly loved the whole experience. Great communication from Brad prior to my arrival. The work itself isn’t too physical and you are always working with someone. The connection I made with some of the animals is unbelievable and I was truly sad to leave! Enjoyed the company of the other volunteers and also picked up some new recipes.

This Is set in pretty hills with great views, the animals are a mixture of cute, entertaining and also can be agressive and defensive. It can be difficult to remember which ones to stay away from and how to act around each of the many different animals and personalities, whilst juggling your tasks.

Luckily the day to day tasks are simple to get used to, but there are many many small details that you will forget and can be made to feel slow in learning these. The staff and volunteers work hard to help each other and spread the jobs evenly and fairly. You will have the chance to do everything and some days you will get more or less break time than others. The Work Day is from 6am- sunset. You work more than the 20-25 hours work away suggests in return for accommodation.
The 4 people volunteer (1 staff, 3 volunteers) cabin can be very cold in winter and would benefit from a good deep clean. However the fire is lovely and there is plenty of time to make meals in the evening and enjoy board games and movies together, this part is really what you make of it.

… read more farm work is incredible and by the end you'll have many skills like knowing what the weather will be like just by having a look at the daily log haha. Of course, it's been beautiful to work with (and for) the animals at the farm and most of the time they are very thankful.
The place is filled with so much peace. The landscape is beautiful and the good thing about getting up with the sun is that you'll get so see stunning sunrises. I recommend to go and sit with the cows on your days off. Just watch them interact or read a book. Or if it is Sunday, you can join the Open Day tour and hear some of the most heartbreaking stories that will make you cry.
I have made friends here, not just Winston, Cale, Candi and other cuties, but also people. You can make a lot out of this stay if you share meals and stories, watch movies and have fun with your roommates. There will be lots of amazing, dedicated people to work with, fun Open Days and (hopefully) many moments of pride, for example when you do your very first successful cattle close without Brad's help.
To sum it up: It's been tough but very rewarding and definitely worth it!

Working with these farm animals is unforgettable, especially for a suburbanite like me. When I got there, I couldn't tell a chicken from a rooster, and had to ask if Oliver was a sheep or a goat. I got to pick
… read more up chickens, cuddle one "lap-dog" rooster (Bubble, that's you!), escort goats (OLIVER!) OUT of the staff bungalow, carry runaway lambs back to the flock, convince cows to leave a lamb barn (it's not easy!), run away from the ornery Carl and Noah, hug sweet little cows Winston and George, kiss pigs (not a required part of the job, but just irresistible for dear Portia), track goats on GPS, sneak hay past cows, feed pumpkin to pigs, and figure out how to feed one animal without other animals stealing the food. Needless to say, there's a lot of poop involved.
The location is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. (But why, oh why, so many hills?? And they all seem to be uphill hills!) Open Days are lovely, especially with free hot dog for volunteers, and you can go on the farm tour if you're off that day, and learn about the animals, and animal industry.
The farm is a kilometer or two from the village, which you'll walk to for groceries, or for a coffee on your day off. Pretty place, but not much going on. You can take the schoolbus on weekdays to get to the nearest towns of Strathpine and Petrie, from which you can take the train to Brisbane or Gold Coast. (They're worth it!) Free wifi, Netflix and youtube on TV, at the staff bungalow.
Be aware, it is hard physical work. Usually a 12-hour day, with about an hour-long break for lunch, and a couple 20-minute or 30-minute breaks in morning and afternoon. It's lovely to be outside, though, doing this work, and with the animals and their personalities around!
Teamwork is a big part of it. You can make great friends here, and enjoy some good talks, drink tea, watch DVD's and Netflix and documentaries together. You work four days a week (not all together), and have three days off. Those off-days tend to be pretty relaxed (because: there's not much to do for fun on a farm; you've worked hard the previous day; it's nice just to laze around in this pretty scenery).
The manager is a dedicated and responsible manager, and expects as much from everyone as he does from himself. He continuously works on quality control and responsible caring for the animals, and perhaps might alter his communication style so that the volunteers can execute his ideas smoothly and congenially. I've worked in high-stress, responsible job in my "real" life before, as a nurse, and have always adored managers who expressed their courtesy and respect for the workers as much as for the patients/clients and the tasks of the day. This attitude works greatly to decrease stress and to make the day not just productive but also enjoyable.
The outside (local) volunteers are wonderful. (Sally, Alex, Louise, Smita, Janelle, Kym!) The farm couldn't work without them. Open Day volunteers (Carol, Gary the many-talented Barbecue Man, Jessie, Leah, Moe the Lamb Lady) are also special. These people are dedicated to helping these animals specifically, and animal welfare in general.
I'm very glad that FAR exists for these animals, and that they get to live their lives here peacefully and healthily and happily, surrounded by people who care for them. Rebecca was an excellent volunteer here at sanctuary. Rebecca learnt quickly and asked questions to ensure that everything was don correctly. She is organised, plans ahead and showed empathy towards the animals in her care. Rebecca was very much liked by the sanctuary staff and the other volunteers. We would love to have her back one day.

all the animals are amazing but beware that you won't be able to cuddle with all of them, these are wild animals and it's not a petting zoo. there are some goats, cows and a rooster that won't be very nice to you. but I think that's all part of the experience when working with animals.
And there are of course some lovely cuddly animals as Mary the cow, Portia the pig, charlie the hen and many more :)
The people that you will be working with are great! such loving and caring people that have so much passion for working with animals. great atmosphere!
It's hard and dirty work from sunrise until sunset. It's not as many other workaway adresses: this farm has quite a strict working schedule and you have a lot of responsibility.
Dayboro is a small little town with just one supermarket, the IGA. not the cheapest. so I would suggest if you're coming from the city to take as much food as you can from the cheaper supermarkets there (and bring the receipts).

… read more will work longer days with more breaks, and vice versa in the winter. For example, we were here in the winter and started work at 6:30am, ending at 5:20 pm. If the sun is up, you are working! The work requires attention to detail, driving carefully on a bumpy hilly road, the ability to repeatedly lift and move hay and straw bales (20 - 40lbs in weight, or about 10 - 20 kgs each), and interact with a variety of different animals with varying levels of tolerance for human contact.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time here. We felt like our work was necessary for the health and well-being of the animals and this felt very fulfilling! Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves animals and doesn't mind working hard for their well-being.
