Hello workawayers! Akwaaba to Ghana, West Africa! I am Jennifer and I live in Accra with my 1,5-year old daughter Macy (born June 2023). We love living in Accra because there's lots to do, we are near the beach and the mountains, there's people from all over the world, we can try new food and we feel welcome, free and happy here. We live near the beach in a friendly and safe neighborhood. We're near several stores, restaurants and pharmacies. It's easy to roam around by Uber/Bolt, (shared) taxi's and trotros (mini vans) to other parts of Accra.

I run a social network organization and we facilitate offline meetings for people to practice languages and meet new people in Accra. We also do tours, cooking classes, picnics and other events (you might want to organize!).

You can help me with organizing the meetings, tours and other events. As well as help me manage our website and social media pages, looking for ways to grow the organization, look for partnerships and business opportunities and more. If you're really into languages you can help me develop "learning materials and games" for the meetings, and of course you're welcome to attend the meetings as well.

Macy would also love to spend time with you (playing, reading, little arts&craft, cooking + baking together). If you speak Dutch that would be great, but French, German, Spanish... it's all good (preferably a non English speaker since we hear English all the time already). I speak Dutch and English, but I would love for Macy that she will be exposed to more languages. While you spend time with Macy I will be working from home.

We have two guest rooms, one will be for you and the other one is up for rent. You might be asked to prepare the room for the next guest(s), as well as light household work and picking some groceries.

Accra is a vibrant, chaotic and interesting city. From here you can easily visit other parts of Ghana (which I highly recommend!) and we are happy to help you around (or join our tours). Working with me will mainly be during (a part of) office hours (our language meetings are in the evening), and there will be plenty of time to visit the museums, galleries, beaches, restaurants, clubs/bars, swimming pools etc.

If you are ready for a new adventure in an African capital city, an independent person who also wants to do things together with us, flexible (in hours, but also in living terms: we do have shortage of electricity and running water sometimes), neat & tidy (but again also understands we live in the tropes...) and overall excited to join our small family and community... do reach out to us with a message introducing yourself (and your travel experience so far), your expectations of the work you want to do with us + how living with us would be and what you wish to learn here in Ghana. Then we will schedule a video call and we can discuss your tasks here. Once you arrived we will go over your schedule. We are quite flexible :)

We can help you with the English or Dutch language, and you will automatically have access to our international community where you can practice lots of languages (including Ghanaian languages). My community is a great way to meet some new friends and explore Accra together. Most people are volunteers at NGOs, interns at embassies and schools, international school teachers, embassy staffs, or backpackers.

You can also join our tours at a special rate (depending on availability!). Just in general, I am very happy to tell you more about living abroad, living in Ghana, having a family abroad, traveling in Ghana (I came to Ghana for the first time in 2013) and so on.

With hosting people from different cultures I hope to expose my daughter to the other culture she's from (Dutch/The Netherlands) or just in general expose her to different languages, food, music, art etc.

    You can help me with:

    Baby related:
    - Play, read, do art, cook + bake with Macy (1-year old) while I am in another room of the house
    - Speak in your language to her while you're alone with her (preferably Dutch, not English, any other language good too)

    Small tasks around the house:
    - Prepare the other guest room for guest(s)
    - Light household work (washing, sweeping, do the dishes)
    - Pick up small groceries
    - Small balcony gardening

The work schedule will change from day to day or even week from from week. I do go to baby groups/activities in the mornings sometimes, two afternoons a week Macy will go to the babysitter out of our house, you might wanna join some (language) courses in Accra that are not daily etc.. We will sit together and plan a schedule for you, when we work together, when you are off etc. Working will be 4/5 hours a day. On weekends you're off. Joining a tour is not considered work, but would love to hear your feedback after the trip.

If you're into languages and a social/open person who's flexible (in time, living terms), patient (a good skill in Ghana anyway), neat and friendly you're more than welcome to stay with us

You will sleep in our guest room, it's a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and toilet. You will get a key for the room and the front door. Our apartment is at a compound. We do have neighbors above us and on the compound. In the night, the front gates closes due security reasons. You can stay out late and leave yourself in.

For meals, we can cook together and share or you can cook for yourself (we will communicate this). I can provide basic ingredients (spices, basic veggies, rice, yam, pasta) you can use and you buy extra ingredients yourself. You can't drink tap water, but you can drink "pure water sachets" which we provide (or bottled water which you buy yourself).

You can order or bring non-vegetarian food to the house, but please only cook vegetarian (or vegan) meals in our kitchen.

In our area there are lots of stores and supermarkets (big supermarkets are a short taxi drive away) and restaurants. You can also easily order food/groceries, or go to the bigger markets.

No smokers, since you will be close to my baby.

We are happy to include you in our small family, tho you will also have time for yourself. If you're off work you can still join us in the living area, or spend time in your private room.

We're excited to hear from and about you!

We don't have a full office desk in your room. You're welcome to work from the kitchen table. Our internet is not unlimited, for your own work please reduce internet time/usage (no uploading of big videos etc). We can help you with a local SIM card where you can load internet data on, or go to the co-working spaces and other cafés in town with free internet. We're happy to help you out.
