AS WE ARE MOVING TO LEVEL 3 LOCKDOWN FROM THE FIRST OF JUNE 2020. THIS ALLOWS FOR TRAVEL WITHIN THE COUNTRY FROM DIFFERENT AREAS AND PROVINCES. WE WELCOME ANY WORKAWAYERS WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US ON OUR WORKAWAY. EVEN IF YOU ARE IN SOUTH AFRICAN AND WOULD JUST LIKE A CHANGE OF SCENERY OR SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO GET INVOLVED WITH.
We live on a small holding 2.2 hectares so not a large property by South African standards of on a farming standard.
there are two of us living on the property full time, that being my mother, in charge of the house and all related tasks, maker of jams and pickles and preserves. Myself and the responsibilities of the outside of the house, general maintenance and all outdoor projects on the go.
We aim to have the property be 100% self sustaining and any extra produce to be processed and then sold to guests that will be staying in the future on the farm.
Long term projects on the go are to build a number of cottages, entertainment area (lapa/boma) on the property for guests to stay in whilst attending our photographic and art workshops, this will also be the base or starting point for for our guests coming on game viewing safaris and photographic safaris.
Very long term project the building of a large swimming pool to compliment the entertainment area.
As most South Africans, we are very sociable and tend to enjoy an outside lifestyle, frequently eating outdoors in the entertainment are during the warmer months over a fire on which we cook our meal (called a braai in South Africa, but more commonly known as a barbecue by most other countries). We normally cook a wide variety of dishes, but always have something in the meals that is traditionally South African. We are not vegetarian and as such do not cater for vegetarians or vegans. Summer is easier as there would be more vegetables available i the gardens but during winter months there is very little to choose form and sometimes after the black frost...well nothing.
Internet is available but also it is capped and there is a limit to what we get on a monthly basis. So internet is used sparingly as we also our businesses are internet reliant.
We do not impose a minimum stay, but do prefer and suggest that Workawayers rather stay for longer periods, to be able to have some continuity on the projects which is beneficial to all parties. For the Workawayers it will also benefit them to stay longer periods so that they may truly enjoy our way of life and also get to see all the interesting attractions in the area.

This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
We have a typical South African lifestyle and for Workawayers coming to visit we can offer this as a normal day to day environment.
From this learn more about the diverse cultures within South Africa, the foods we eat and the way we live.
We speak English, Afrikaans, Dutch and a little German.
The Workawayers will learn the skills required to do the various activities on the farm.
We are not that remote from major towns and attractions so Workawayers will be able to experience the life on the farm and also have the opportunity to see city life as well
Time is made for excursions both to explore the local nature, city and historical sites, however some sites charge for entrance fees and this would be payable by the Workawayers.
First things first, as it is a small farm most things are done manually. This means that there is a lot of hard manual labour.
We live on a small holding and are in the process of taking on a number of projects to get the property to where we would be able to host guests for our photography and art workshops, and later hosting guests for game viewing safaris and photographic safaris.
Outside and on the small holding:
general maintenance of the garden and property (maintaining flower beds, weeding, removing old shrubs, trees etc)
planning and implementing the new layout of the gardens
maintaining the current vegetable garden/orchard which supplies the house with freshly grown vegetables and fruit
general day to day farm tasks of mucking out stables, milking the cow and feeding animals, not many
Inside the house:
general housework and day to day cleaning
assistance with the cooking
For Workawayers who plan to stay for longer periods there are projects that are a little more involved and ongoing that will take a longer time to complete, these are;
Building of the new cottages
Building of the new lapa (braai/entertainment area)
Creating the dam and wetland section of the property
Layout and implementing the new orchards
Building of the new photographic studio
Internet and computers:
assistance with the computers and internet
There is a cottage on the farm that has two bedrooms, a lounge, sun room/dinning room a small kitchen and a bathroom with a bath, no shower.
There is one solar panel geyser for the whole household so when it comes to bathing hot water must be used sparingly and be considerate that there are others that need to use hot water as well.
Bedrooms have double beds or single beds, so we can accommodate couples, friends travelling together or single persons
As we live on a small farm that is remote but not that remote, we try to coordinate all excursions off the farm and there are many activities you can occupy yourself with or learn about on your time off.
Take part on some of our hikes to interesting sites nearby
Visit local historical and cultural sites, Nelson Mandela museum, being one of the local historical attractions.
Visit the local nature reserves, game reserves
Further afield we do arrange tours to game reserves for a weekend break
For those Workawayers staying for longer periods we do arrange diving trips down to the coast
visit the world cultural heritage site the "Cradle of Africa" to mention a few.
Also if you have an interest in photography learn from your host who is a professional photographer and specialises in Exclusive Portraiture, utilising special HSS & ND Filter Techniques and wildlife photography
Please note, that we are still in a remote area and although there will be a number of excursions arranged and we will try to give you a full rounded experience of South Africa there will still be a lot of time that you will have to yourselves, relaxing perusing a hobby or doing some art or photography or hiking, or simply just relaxing under the trees and reading a book and enjoying the slower pace and tranquil peace.
We are however always around and you are always come have a chat and learn more about our beautiful country. Also good for those that are wanting to improve on their language skills
Please note, some sites/attractions/museums/game reserves/nature reserves, charge for entrance fees and this would be payable by the Workawayers, however we will inform you of any charges that there may be when discussing an excursion.
