Vom Workawayer (Jordan) für Host
It is truely my hope that after reading this you will get in touch with Kez and Mel, and organise yourself some time with a couple of amazing Workaway hosts, in a picturesque corner of the world. A rustic slice of paradise that is only a short drive to the west coast, and surrounding towns. Personally, I had only intended a two week Workaway...
… read more that fortnight plan changed into a three month stay, and the founding of a treasured friendship with Kez, Mel and King Dobby (A rather exceptional dog, loves a scratch behind the ear... just so you know). Had I been blessed with a self filling bank account, I would've stayed until they kicked me out!
There is always work to be done, ever is the wont of country living, wether that's gardening, maintenance or building. But the work is never arduous, or overly taxing; and when that Sun decides to shine, it doesn't feel like work at all. Meals are always hearty and homely, and the caravan is there to ensure a cosy stay with your own space; fireplace included, to chase away the chills. Though, I never finished the shower... still a work in progress, that's my bad. If you're handy, that might be a priority task for you.
If you are a budding creative, such as myself, you'll have ample time in your day to really focus on your craft. The work/life balance is perfect. Take time for yourself in the mornings before the day's jobs begin, enjoy the afternoons when the weather is fine; and enjoy Kez and Mel's company! They are a wealth of knowledge on all things natural, spiritual, creative and otherwise akin; and have enough fun tales to share to make you feel right at home (even when home is on the other side of the planet).
It was only necessity that sent me elsewhere, and I am counting down the days until I can get back for a cup of coffee and a yarn at the outside table on a sunny day. It is a beautiful, special place, with truely special people! Kez and Mel (and Dobby), thanks again for everything! It was an absolute pleasure!
Vom Workawayer (Martin) für Host
I spent a mere 8 days with Kes and Mel, but it was quite the significant experience that allowed me to get a taste of the Irish countryside and the local culture, all while trying to make myself useful in the process. The work was never too complex to carry out, and only required a proper amount of energy and motivation.
This was a last-minute
… read more inquiry, in that I contacted the host after my flight to Ireland was already booked, and I received a positive reply only 4 days before showing up. I am glad that worked out, and I am grateful for the hosts' availability.
While accommodation was a bit basic, a good share of my work revolved around making the local infrastructure more hospitable for present and future volunteers, so I often felt motivated to do my best. On top of that, the hosts are courteous and willing to assist you in case of any specific issue, and there is usually the possibility of receiving a ride if you don't have your own car: sometimes, the hosts could invite you for a night out at the local pub.
The location isn't particularly close to any famous place of interest, but you have a nice lake not far from the property, plus the Burren on the other side of the county: this is not the capital, you are in the heartland of Ireland, far from tourist-heavy paths.
The weather wasn't always ideal, but I have had my share of sunny and warm days during my stay; keep in mind this is Ireland, you need to be able to endure some rain occasionally, but there are options for indoor work if the weather is unforgiving (such as in the polytunnel).
This was my first visit to the Republic of Ireland, a beautiful country all in all, especially when one avoids tourist traps; I think I may come back in 1 or 2 years, by means of another Workaway arrangement.
I can certainly recommend this host for those who have a short stay of 1–2 weeks in mind; maybe staying longer than that could also be doable, if you do not mind limited internet coverage (I always used my own phone's data plan) and a shower that requires 30 minutes to give hot water, based also on what is most convenient for the host family.
Just contact Kes and Mel in advance (don't leave things to the last minute like me) and see if you can find common ground.Feedback
