This was a fantastic, life changing experience. The people I met were so kind, and Sagasfeld is a peaceful, lovely place that is full of healing vibes.
So let’s get this out of the way first- this is not your typical artist residency experience. You WILL be expected to show progress on your project and you may be asked to help out in other ways.
… read more If that bothers you, then this experience is not for you. Personally, I really enjoyed that aspect of the expedience, it felt great being a part of the community and getting to contribute to something, but I can see how others might feel differently, so it’s definitely best to know that before you decide to go, so that this experience can be a good fit for you.
What this experience actually is: this is the opportunity to collaborate with the hotel owner and your fellow Workies and the space itself to create a unique piece of art FOR the space. The art you make here is not just for you, it is for the guests and staff of the hotel as well and as such it should reflect the vibes and the mission of Sagasfeld. That being said, everyone is very open to different art styles and techniques- you can definitely feel free to be your unique creative self.
Other things to know: You will be provided space to create, but there is no “dedicated” studio space per se, because the Creative Room is a community space that has multiple uses. I initially found this to be frustrating but I eventually figured out how to make it work.
Also, Olaf is very generous and he will order any art supplies that you need to create your project- HOWEVER, it does take some time for them to arrive and the art supplies that are available initially are not professional grade, so I suggest bringing some of your own materials to get started. Definitely bring your own brushes and paint if you are a painter.
Sometimes the communication is a little bit difficult, but considering the language barriers and the sheer number of things that needed to be taken into consideration ( hotel management is complicated!) I am actually quite impressed at how smoothly everything went.
The best part of this experience is the community. You will have opportunities to participate in classes and fun activities ( I got to go to a cacao ceremony!) and there are German lessons each week which definitely helps (I know exponentially more German than I did initially, although it’s still not very much 😅)
The space is very wooded and remote which I found very relaxing. There is a sauna, so that’s lovely. The nearest town is approximately 20 minutes away by bike and it is TINY but so quaint and beautiful. The food is also good, especially for veg and vegan people. The staff are all very kind, although keep in mind that some of them only speak German.
Overall, a fantastic experience, especially if you’re willing to be flexible and helpful. I definitely recommend this experience to a mature, self-directed artist.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

Awesome experience !
I stayed 6 weeks in Sagasfeld and it was a very good time. There I could be a full time artist, I first painted a side of a fence and then I realized 5 canvas that were hanged in the trees. We had an opening for that project ! I was staying in a big double floor
Room with sauna and 3 very nice roommates, The whole team was

Sagasfeld is a very nice, relaxed place.
The contact with each other is very friendly and cordial.
During the 3 weeks there I had a concrete artistic task. The design of a wooden fence. It was a nice satisfying task.
For creative people, who want to be artistically active here, it is important to discuss a clear task in advance. How it worked

A great time.
Thank you very much for that.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

Sagasfeld is home to many facets. We have to keep in mind that it started from simple potatoes and now is creative with yoga and all. We have to admit this place is certainly for a good, slow and familiar ambient. No struggle, no hustle, stress is here to be free.

Sagasfeld is a beautiful, charming and very calm place, so perfect to get some rest and get out of the daily stress and hectic life!
We (unlike the other 5 workawayers who were there at the same time as us) had a cozy large room with a private toilet just for ourselves.
I'm a bit nervous to write this message thought, because our experience was
… read more far away from what we expected.
It's true that there are some art workshops happening there from times to times, but the place itself is not an art school at all. It's a WELLNESS HOTEL, therefore the description, profile and photos on the workaway page are very misleading. If you are an artist looking for exchange, learning and practicing this ain't really the best place to go.
The school and art camp are just an idea of the owner, which is great, but are not reality yet. I had to apply sending them my work and telling if I have done courses in the area to end up painting stones and taking pictures of the place (?).
Despite that we had many situations with stressed or in a bad mood people, including us workawayers, due to the many rules you have to follow as a helper.
You work minimum 5 hours a day 6(!) days a week.
Workawayers eat the rest of what is offered to the hotel guest, and the food is not good and often cold. The whole ambient makes you feel less worth than guest for an example, and we weren't the only uncomfortable ones.
Internet connection is also very bad, working only sometimes and just in the restaurant, and Sagasfeld is at least one hour away from the next city, so you're quite isolated - which can be great if you're looking for that! But it was also not mentioned in the description.
If you actually know what you're going to do it's still a very nice place to be and to relax. I hope communication and treatment evolve in the future thought!
warm regards
