Staying with Annie was our first Workaway and we were so lucky to have such an awesome experience. From arriving, Annie and her friends made us feel welcomed with amazing food, drinks and advice about exploring FNQ. Our accommodation was private in the converted ‘Cactus’ van and the work expected was fair - morning clean up of animals, evening

I would recommend having transport to explore the area but Annie’s place is a great place to relax and take some time out for a bit. Thank you guys for everything - we loved our time with you! We spent 10 days at Annie's house. It was an incredible experience for us in the middle of the rainforest
Our role was in the morning to clean the cages and in the afternoon to cut the fruit and salad for the bats and ducks. Sometimes we did 2 hours of gardening if the weather was good.
We were lucky enough to be able to plant a tree!
In 10 days
… read more we were able to have 3 days break to visit cape tribulations and mossman gorge (Annie gave us very good advice on what to visit)
Once the day was over, the evenings were very nice! Always very good food, some nights we drank cocktails on the terrace (always with good music and good mood) and others we watched Netflix!
We also met and spent a lot of time with Annie's friends who are also super cool.
So we really recommend this host

Yari was an awesome workawayer. He was really helpful and was a really fast learner and completed all his chores with enthusiasm and care. All my animals loved him and he even took it upon himself to clean the fish tank without being asked. We were super happy to have had him here and sad to see him leave.

Staying and working with Annie and the bats is the best decision you can make. She is a kind and incredibly generous host who does the most to make you feel comfortable at her home and in her life, she shares her delicious meals with you and makes sure you get some exploring in on off days you might have . Work involves cleaning cages, cutting fruit, and whatever else may come up. It’s such a special experience to take care of the bats so you will want to have your vaccinations, even though all of the bats are healthy. You really learn so much from Annie and all of her friends about the Daintree area and she is very accommodating in making sure you get to see really gorgeous parts of the area. I can’t recommend workaway with Annie enough, her passion for animals and her dedication to remaking natural habitat is so inspiring and something I will always remember. I spent two weeks with Annie, Jody and the bats and really had a great time!

Although the work kind of spreads through the entire day, Annie always made sure that I could leave the farm for a long enough time to do some activities around Mosmann and port Douglas ( crocodile river cruise, hiking in mosmann gorge, snorkelling, etc)
If you do get the chance to help Annie with her bats, this is an opportunity you shouldn't miss. Thank you so much for the special time I could have with you, Annie, and that I could get to know all your friends.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

This was our first ever work away and we cannot recommend it enough! As this is a bit of a long review we will start with a short summary - Annie is so friendly and generous, the bats are amazing and a once in a lifetime opportunity to volunteer with, the food was delicious the accommodation comfortable and set in rainforest with loads of wildlife
… read more her friends are so nice and she has lovely cats and dogs
As some of you may be like us and want as much detail as possible especially if its your first time using workaway we have also created this review with a bit more detail. We stayed 4 weeks with Annie in October - November (this is around the time for the baby flying foxes so even though it is then a bit more work we would definitely recommend staying at this time if its still available!). Get your rabies jabs as well before coming as it means you can handle the bats which is such an amazing experience!
Annie is absolutely lovely she loves all of the wildlife she cares for and she always included us in her plans. Whilst we stayed she took us out for meals with her friends multiple times, a nice locals swimming creek with turtles, fish and eels in, Cape tribulation where we saw stingrays and shark from the beach, 2 beach picnics (one to watch the moon rise), 2 local markets and a croc tour. We got to meet her friends and they were all really nice and welcoming (Jodi, Johnny, Vannessa, Lee, Keana, Nickers, Adam (if you guys read this apologies for any wrong spelling of your names and thank you so much for being so friendly)) Annies Dogs and cats are so nice, they absolutely love attention. Annie does also like to party so a great opportunity to enjoy some drinks in the rainforest but she is also really respectful if you don’t enjoy a party.
She gives lunch and dinner and it was delicious every time! Lunch normally consisted of good bread, cheese and meat e.g. dark rye bread, Castello cheese, salami (not cheap lunches). If you prefer any kinds of meal Annie was happy to cater for you (we enjoy our cheese so she made raclettes one of the days which was absolutely delicious) some of the many delicious meals she made for us were thai green curry, Bolognese, Goulash, Pasta Marinara, Chicken Luxa and Buffalo Chicken wings with blue vein sauce.
The rough plan of the day when we were there (will change depending on the time of year and amount of help) In the morning clean out the cages and wash the tubs that the bat food was in, help feed the young bats if she has any (they may have 4-5 feeds a day so can take a while but you wont mind as they are incredibly cute). Help out with any jobs for the morning if there are any, 3pm cut up the fruit, 530pm feed the bats and sizzle (the rescued possum). Whilst all of these jobs are easy they are spread throughout the day but people pay for this kind of experience and if you have plans its possible to move the fruit cutting to the morning and she sometimes puts the food out if you are not free. Whilst we were at Annies we spent 5 nights at Cape tribulation at one of her friends properties (she also let us borrow all her camping gear which was very nice!), had 2 trips to Mossman gorge and a trip to the Habitat. Annie can suggest a tour on the reef but as we had just come from a 3 day liveaboard we wanted to spend time with the bats and explore the rainforest more.
On Annies accommodation there are Cool mammals, reptiles, insects, amphibians, birds. Some of the animals we spotted on Annies property are Bandicoots, Striped Possum, Spectacled Flying Foxes, Keelback snake, Slaty Grey Snake, Amethystine Pythons, Goanna, Fairy Wren, Cockatoos, Sunbirds, Lorikeets, Curlews, double eyed fig parrots, white lipped tree frogs, Praying Mantis, Katydids, Huntsman and Ulysses Butterflies. The accommodation is either a granny flat or a room in the house (depending on if she has an extra helper), we stayed in the room in the house and it was really nice with a comfy bed and ceiling fan, we were not too hot on any of the nights and slept well each time. The wifi was good and Annie has a large TV with Netflix and Foxtel which gave a nice relaxing option for evenings. The Veranda was really nice and is set up with comfy seats with a great view of the garden/rainforest
We will recommend our friends to help here if they come for a working holiday and we will try to come again if we are in the area, so if you love wildlife, good food, comfort and friendly people this is a perfect workaway!Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

Working with Annie and her bats has been a unique experience. It’s heart-warming to see someone care so much for the environment around her, and to see someone trying to actively engage with it as much as Annie does. She’s doing great things with her current reforestation project and I think that’s exactly what the planet needs right now! ‘Annie’s

Whether we spent a night out at the local pub or had a chill night in watching a movie or drinking wine in the fun tub, there was never a dull moment. This was our first Workaway experience and it was great! We stayed 7 weeks and it was such a unique experience. Working with Annie and the bats was so much fun and truly something different. The bats are so adorable and have so much personality! The work with the bats is pretty much the same every day (cutting food, putting out juice, cleaning
… read more cages, etc.), but there's also different things to do around the property like weeding, planting trees or general housework. You should always offer your help if you're not doing anything, but there is also a good amount of downtime for you to hangout or explore. We did have a bit of a misunderstanding about that, but we worked it out smoothly. Be prepared that there are no regular off-days, the bats are always there. But Annie is open to organising off-days for you if you want to go exploring.
The granny flat we stayed in was beyond our expectations! Super spacious and very modern. For food we cooked breakfast and lunch for ourselves and shared dinner with Annie, but you're always welcome to help yourself to things in the fridge.
Annie, herself, was so enjoyable. Very outgoing, kind, funny and open-minded. She even took us to some beautiful places like Mossman Spring and Cape Tribulation. She'll teach you a lot about her little flying babies and you can really see how much she cares for them. Her friends, which were around often, are also very nice people to talk to and very helpful!
