Hello!
We are a family living in a beautiful historical house (first built in the 1450's) about 50 minutes outside London where the father of one of the English kings was born. We have lots of people come to stay and we're always super busy with visiting friends and family and with indoor and outdoor work. We have had people from all over the world come and stay to lend a hand. The place is semi rural - in one of the oldest villages in the country with a lovely large garden and field with horses. You can get into London in about 45/50 minutes - bus plus one train. It's also really handy for Stanstead airport (20 mins away) which has great access across the country and Europe. Our children are aged 12 - 16. We host concerts from time to time and love all forms of music, art and writing. We have hosted people from all over the world and many of our guests come back and stay with us! This is basically a perfect spot to retreat from London while at the same time being able to go in and out easily if you want to... It's also a great opportunity to stay in a truly historic (but friendly!) old English house.
This is a great spot for someone who just wants to spend time in an old English house and village. Most of our guests tend to socialise in London at the weekends and then retreat here for the weekdays. But some go to the village pub and hang out there with the locals.
We love folks who are friendly and cheerful. We love folks who can cook. We love folks who don't mind mucking in with this and that and are up for helping out around the house - keeping things tidy and clean.
Right now, we are looking for short term help from someone who is good with the following tasks:
1. Driving to and from the school (automatic car).
2. Help with housework.
So if this fits your skills we might have a great fit!
IMPORTANT: We're sorry but we only take people with driving licenses because you will need to be able to get around and help driving the children. You really must be a confident and able driver. The main reason we host is because there are so many lifts to do - to the station and the schools and friends and so on, back and forth.

London is close - we all go and come in the mornings and evenings. There is a bus to the railway station (about 15 minute trip) which leaves from the end of the field.
The village has an excellent pub and the walking here is beautiful.

I was originally meant to stay for 4 weeks but I ended up staying for 8 weeks due to everything going so well. Ed and Emma were very encouraging of me getting out to experience different places like Cambridge and London during the weekends but also for me to chill at home for the weekend if that's what I wanted to do that week. I'm sure it's going to be hard to top this workaway experience but I think I'll definitely be back at some point during my travels (I'm already missing Emma's homemade bread!!) . I stayed with Emma and Ed for two months and I knew I was in the right place from the first day I arrived. They are fantastic hosts and some of the easiest people to communicate and work with. A huge part of the job is driving the kids to and from school with a bit of help around the house. Ed and Emma make it super easy to know what is expected so there is still plenty of time during the week to explore the area and have some time to yourself. It's also very easy to visit London and Cambridge on the weekends! If you get the opportunity to stay with such wonderful people you will 100% not be let down.
I could go on and on with good things to say about this family so, in short, thank you all for such a lovely two months (and for letting me read all of your books!). I will miss you all, especially Tally :)

There are many paths and it is just a wonderful region for walks and hikes. The children themselves are lovely and I enjoyed every minute of playing with them. Even though it’s based in a quiet village, you will be able to do a lot of trips, for it’s conveniently connected by train. So I could actually experience English countryside life, only 40min by train to central London and even less to Cambridge. Plus I got the best advice for things to do and visit! I extended my stay and really wish life would/will allow me to stay longer with this wonderful family.
