Beschreibung
We have an English learning school for grade 1 to grade 6 in Tainan City, Taiwan.

Our teaching style is more open and fun than typical cram schools in Taiwan. We don't focus on book and homework as much as we do activities and getting children involved in practical use of English, through projects and other forms of hands on learning.

Arbeit
You will be helping our teachers on classes to do activities, you won't be the only teacher in the class, so don't worry if you don't have any experience in teaching, as long as you like children and know how to have fun. We would like you to share your culture to our kids, tell them about your country, your life experiences, or something you love. Also, it will be good if you can talk (just chatting) with our kids when you see them, it doesn't have to be something serious, so they can have chances to practice speaking English on their daily lives.

Unterkunft
You will be living in the building of the studio where you can use all the space. There have bathrooms, showers with hot water, a well-equipped kitchen, and all the rooms are with air conditioners, and good wifi connection everywhere. In the room has bed mattresses and private cabinets.
We provide lunch and dinner, you will be eating with us, having some decent Taiwanese food everyday. There is also food and basic ingredients in the kitchen all the time, if you want to cook or bake. And it's very easy to get something to eat around the area.
Our studio is located in Anping district where includes most of the tourist attractions of Tainan City. It's close enough that you can walk or ride bicycle around to see all the interesting spots in Tainan.

Tainan is a city you have to visit in Taiwan. Since it's the old capital of Taiwan, there are many historic sights to see, and an old port where you can have a boat ride. Tainan has a long coastline with good beach, if you like to get tanned, we are close to the beach and it's sunny all year round here.
Tainan is known as the city of food, we have famous and delicious food all over the streets, not only Taiwanese but also exotic. There are few night markets in Tainan, that everyone loves. Night market is an interesting culture of Taiwan, where you can have food, buy cheap stuff, and play games.

I was with Fany and Telence in the studio during July 2019 for a month. The experience there was amazing! All the teachers were so incredibly friendly and helpful.

The classes I had were during the afternoon, so I was free to visit around the area during the morning. Fany and Telence lent me a bike so I could be more free, as Anping is a little… read more far from downtown Tainan, but there is still plenty to do (and eat!) there! Elsa was so very helpful and showed me around Tainan's night market, and I learnt not only what the best foods are (I have a weak spot for sweet potato balls) but also very interesting points about Taiwan's history thanks to them. And whenever I was wondering what to do or where to go on my off days, they always gave me great suggestions!

The only thing was that it was a little hard to understand what was happening at some points. Because I did not only help for English classes, but also for other activities (Like baking, sports, sewing...) where the instructions were all given in Chinese for the students. (Some of them are around 5 years old, and it can go up to around 14) So I would advise you to at least take up some basic Chinese lessons to have an idea of what's going on, because it can be hard to ask for an English explanation with 10 kids enthusiastically mixing cake batter around you haha! That being said, the activities were all very straight forward, (And very fun!) so even without in depth comprehension, you can easily make out what to do, and if you can't, just take a little time to ask for clarification to the teachers! They will be happy to explain.

For some classes, I prepared the lessons. With the older students, we talked about planets and stars, and with the younger ones, we talked about... Pokémon! Some Pokémon names are portmanteaus, and I thought it would be a fun idea to show them new vocabulary using something they are familiar with and love. They really liked it! All the kids were lovely, and although some of them might have been shy at the beginning, they were all happy to play with me by the end. I still have the letter a little girl wrote me, it moved me so much. The love that the students and family and teachers give you is so palpable.

Taiwan is a beautiful place, and I had the chance to go visit other spots of the island during the weekends. I went to Alishan mountain, Kaohsiung, and Kenting. Transportation is very easy to use and affordable, so you should take the chance to visit while you're there! Taiwan is so beautiful. It was the first time I travelled solo, and I'm so happy I chose Taiwan to do so. The entire country is very safe, transportation is very reliable, and people will always help you if you need help with directions. I am very fond of national parks, so if you're like me, you will have a blast in Taiwan!

Thank you again, so so much, for allowing me to stay with you Fany and Telence. And thank you Elsa, Don and all the teachers for making me feel so welcomed right off the bat! You were so kind and helpful to me. The time I spent in Taiwan was some of the best in my entire life, and I wouldn't have been able to experience such a fantastic place without all of you.

This cram school in the heart of Anping, the Harbor District of Tainan, is unlike most cram schools in Taiwan. The atmossphere is more like that of a big community center and you can very much feel that everyone - Telence, Fanny, the teachers, kids - see each other more as a big family. The emphasis is put not so much on memorization and learning… read more 24-7....the staff of 魚果 tries to make it a fun and light-hearted learning environment. Baking class, Badminton, Science experiments, arts and crafts etc. balance out the obligatory daily homework grind and prepping for exams.

I was here for a month and I think it was to my advantage that I speak Mandarin fluently and also have ties to Anping - my father was born and grew up here and I still have family who lives around Anping. My relatives said if I dont feel comfortable at the school or wanted to stay with family, I could always come stay at their place. But honestly, after a short while, I felt like a member of the 魚果 family already. Telence and Fanny always saw to it that I had what I needed and asked me to join them on trips or dinners all the time. All the teachers gave me responsibility in class and treated me as an equal. And the kids...well, where to begin. At first they were rather confused, given the fact that they were told that the new volunteer would be German, not Taiwanese but they weren't prepared for both at the same time :P. After the initial confusion I got to know them very well over the next few weeks and chatting with them, helping them with their homework or just drawing, playing cards or giving them piggyback rides was a joy and very rewarding. Granted I didn't speak much English with the kids outside of class (since they figured out pretty quickly that I speak Mandarin), this gave me the chance to explain to them, that English, unlike some other subjects in school, can open many doors later in life and can be a useful tool to unlock books, movies, music, travel and work opportunities and can bring joy and new perspectives.

I would like to thank Telence, with whom I had many interesting conversations and traded many anectodes, Fanny, whose love and compassion can be felt everywhere in 魚果, Chris, who was always interested in what I was up to and just fun to talk to, Elsa, who helped me with all the organisational stuff and is a hardworking, young teacher, Teresa, Don, Haohaos Mom and Teacher Zhimin, who all showed me apprecation and made me feel like a valued member of the staff.

I know feel like I have another home in Anping now and the next time I come to Taiwan, I will definitely come by to say hi :)

I spent a wonderful January month in Tainan with Telence's family, the school staff and all the kids. There was also another Workawayer that came in the middle of my stay and it was awesome to share the experience with another person to relate to while everyone else took such good care of us. I was amazed how every single people out there did… read more their best to make us happy and comfortable.

Telence and Fanny always got food and groceries for us and took us to many restaurants. Chris also took us to great eating places and to camping as well with her family. Teresa provided all what we needed for cooking and translated for the kids. Elsa is such a sweetheart and a good singer too, you should definitely invite her over to karaoke! I also met an American teacher that took me to scuba-diving in Kenting and a Canadian one that got me many beers at bar and taught me the way of darts.

My schedule was split in two halfs, as I arrived right before the kids' exams and holidays happened during my stay. When they have class in the public school, they come here around noon and study/play until 6-8pm. Because the parents work late most of the time, we also babysit them a little after class. During holidays, we acted as a sort of summer camp with the kids coming in the morning this time. This was the most "busy" part as I didn't have much to provide back when they had to train for their exams.

Most of the parents are wealthy people and you can sometimes feel that some kids are truely spoiled in the middle grades. But grades 1 and 2 who you will work most of the time with are cheerful and adorable! We gave them culture classes (I did a joint presentation with the Japanese volunteer to point out differences in French and Japanese culture, then went on with famous French kings and Google map'd my neighbourhood, which they enjoyed the most)

We also gave cooking classes in which we introduced foreign recipes and overall just tried to befriend them and give them some English. It's still better to be able to speak some Chinese I think, as did the other volunteer who had a way easier time communicating than me. But don't worry too much as Teresa and Elsa are fluent in English and will always help you with any kind of stuff if you don't know any Chinese.

I really enjoyed how having my own culture and background was an asset here, as I could get everybody (including myself) to know more about culture, history and, most importantly, food (I loved cooking for them so much I did it outside of cooking classes as well). The beach is also not far away (bathing in January was no problem as the weather was almost always great). And I had my own room, which was actually a classroom but still not that busy.

All in all an outstanding experience with oustanding people. Tainan is not such an amazing city (I strolled around all of it in just two days) but with a bike you can reach some amazing places in the countryside. With a transportation card you can go to Kaohsiung, Chiayi etc for cheap, and the staff members have cars for the most part so they will show you around on weekends.
