Qualified, native-speaker English teachers are needed to teach for about 11 months, from Jan 2020-Nov 2020. These children’s homes are managed by dedicated Thai staff and supported by an Australian charity.
There are 5 charity-supported children’s homes in various regions of Thailand.
The children range in age from pre-school to teenagers. Originally these homes were established to support children who had lost parents and families during the 2004 Tsunami but now the children come from various backgrounds – some may have no parents or family and others come from poorer or broken families. For various reasons they are living in the homes fulltime and are cared for by dedicated Thai staff.
The children are very excited about the English program and give teachers a warm welcome.
One of the homes, where you will be teaching, is a small home with only 20 children and 4 staff. It is a new building situated among fruit plantations a few kms from Khitchkut (and about 40 mins by car from the larger town of Chanthaburi). The children's school bus goes into Khitchkut every day.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Volunteers live on-site at the children's homes and share meals with the Thai staff and the children. This is an amazing opportunity to make a difference to the lives of many children and to experience the real Thailand, away from the cities and the beach resorts.
The Thai staff at the homes are awe-inspiringly giving and caring to the children and welcoming and kind hosts to volunteers. Living at close quarters with these staff is a privelege and a wonderful learning experience.
We need teacher volunteers who enjoy working with children (and these children are very special!), who take their teaching seriously but like to make it fun for the kids.
English classes take place after school, in the evenings and on weekends because the children attend regular government schools during the day. We require volunteers to be willing to teach about 20 hours per week and spend some time preparing and reporting.
We have developed a full English language curriculum, complete with student text books, lesson plans and loads of extra teaching resources to make the lessons relevant, fun and engaging.
At each home, volunteers have a dedicated, air-conditioned teaching space, with all the equipment needed (e.g. whiteboard, laptop, smart TV, printing facilities, educational games and picture books).
All teacher volunteers need to provide evidence of:
• teaching qualifications
• Working with Children Check, or similar
• Police Check
• contactable teaching referees
Teachers live on-site, alongside Thai staff and children.
All teachers will have a private room with en-suite or a small cottage to live in. The accommodation is very comfortable and includes air-conditioning and fans.
Volunteers are invited to enjoy all meals at the home. Where there are no cooking facilities in the accommodation, volunteers have full access to the kitchen at the home, should they wish to cook.
Classes will be scheduled so that there are 2 consecutive days off per week.
Ease of movement from the home to the nearest city or tourist destination, depends on the home. Some homes are within cycling distance to a neighboring community, at some homes volunteers have to rely on vehicles belonging to the home or public transport (and, this can be difficult in some of the homes because of their location).
