Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste is the most accessible location along the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica -Tamarindo Beach is part of a bay formed by a cape, and Playa Grande lies to the north of Tamarindo inside the bay. The two beaches are separated by Central America’s largest mangrove estuary, Estero de Tamarindo. South of Tamarindo there is another beautiful estuary, Estero de San Francisco, and beautiful Playa Langosta. These beaches and estuaries are part of Las Baulas National Park. Las Baulas park is named for the giant leatherback turtle, and the beaches in the park comprise one of the major nesting sites for the turtles worldwide. The Las Baulas Conservation Project at Playa Grande studies the habits and movements of the turtles in an effort to discover ways to aid dwindling populations.
Night tours are available from September through March, allowing visitors to view the spectacle of a female turtle digging her nest and laying eggs. Tours are also available during high tide for visitors to cruise up into the mangrove estuary, where a breathtaking diversity of birds, mammals and reptiles can be seen. Once a quiet fishing hamlet, Tamarindo has evolved to be the area’s most developed and accessible tourist town.
