Welcome to our little mountain home and heart-driven project tucked away near Sámara, Costa Rica. This is a place where animals, nature, and people come together — surrounded by forest, fresh air, and unforgettable sunsets.

Life here moves at a slower, gentler pace. The days are warm and sunny, the nights cool and star-filled. We spend our time caring for the animals, tending the land, and living simply — and we’d love for you to experience that rhythm too. It’s a space to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature, with nourishing food, and with yourself.

Our family — Carol, Dani, and our little one, Elias — shares this adventure with a wonderful local team you’ll quickly feel part of.
You’ll meet Roberto, who grew up on this land and knows every tree and trail; Mauricio, a Santa Elena local who helps with the animals, gardens, and building projects; and Steven and Xiomara, a kindhearted couple who moved here to support us — Steven brings ideas to life with his hands, while Xiomara keeps everything welcoming and cozy.

Everyone here loves a good laugh, enjoys sharing what they know, and makes great company if you’d like to practice your Spanish. We’re excited to welcome you into our home, share meals around the table, and create a space where you can learn, help, and truly feel part of something meaningful.

Staying with us is a special way to experience authentic Costa Rican mountain life — all while being just a short drive from the beaches of Sámara.

Here, you’ll live alongside locals and our family, sharing meals, laughter, and everyday moments that capture the true spirit of pura vida. Our team — Roberto, Mauricio, Steven, and Xiomara — are all from this region and love to share stories about the land, local traditions, and food. They’re also patient, fun, and always happy to help you practice your Spanish.

Our sanctuary sits in one of the world’s rare Blue Zones — regions where people live longer, healthier lives thanks to a lifestyle focused on balance, nature, and community. Life here moves at a slower, more intentional pace: we eat fresh seasonal food, spend time outdoors, nurture strong social bonds, and live with deep respect for well-being. As a Workawayer, you’ll have the chance to experience this lifestyle firsthand — and begin to understand the simple habits that contribute to long, healthy living.

You’ll also enjoy a mix of country and coastal culture: waking up to the sound of roosters, spending quiet mornings on the farm, and taking weekend trips to nearby beaches, waterfalls, or small mountain towns.

Beyond the daily tasks, this is a space for mutual learning and exchange. You’ll dive into sustainable farming, permaculture, cheese-making, and animal care — and we’ll learn from you too: your culture, language, and ideas. Some of the most meaningful moments here happen when people from different parts of the world come together with a shared love for nature, animals, and a slower, more intentional way of living.

There’s always something meaningful to dive into — and yes, sometimes that means getting a little muddy! Most of what we do is centered around caring for our animals and nurturing the land with patience, curiosity, and love.

Some of the daily activities include:

Feeding, bathing, and looking after the sheep and goats

Milking and learning how to turn that fresh milk into delicious cheese and yogurt

Shearing and preparing wool — from cleaning and carding to creative uses

Gardening and orchard work: planting, harvesting, composting, and tending our green spaces

Light construction projects, such as building fences, shelters, paths, or experimenting with eco-building ideas

Adding creative touches — painting signs, decorating spaces, or leaving your mark in artistic ways

We enjoy working side by side with Workawayers, sharing skills, stories, and plenty of laughter along the way. You’ll pick up practical knowledge about permaculture principles, sustainable farming, and what goes into building a small artisanal brand around our dairy and botanical products.

We especially love when volunteers bring their own ideas and creativity — whether it’s organizing a project, helping design something new, or simply making the space more beautiful. Here, every pair of hands, every idea, and every smile truly makes a difference.

We love meeting people from all over the world and making language part of the experience here. If you’re hoping to learn or practice Spanish, this is the perfect place to do it — most of our team and neighbors are native speakers, and they’re always happy to help you improve just by chatting and sharing daily life together. We’re also glad to practice English (or any other language you speak!) with you. Language exchange is such a fun and meaningful way to build friendships and understand each other’s cultures more deeply. And here, it tends to happen naturally — around the table during meals, while we’re working on the farm, or out exploring the area side by side.

  • Unterkunft

    Unterkunft

We want you to feel truly at home — not just as a guest, but as part of our extended family. Our volunteer rooms are simple, cozy, and filled with natural light. Each has a comfortable bed, a small closet for your things, and a window that looks out toward the mountains. Bathrooms and showers are shared, and we make sure they’re always clean and well cared for.

Life here is communal and down-to-earth. We share spaces, meals, and daily moments together. The kitchen is open for everyone to use, and cooking often turns into one of the most joyful parts of life here — a time to connect, laugh, and share stories around the stove.

Most of what we eat comes directly from the land around us, grown or produced through sustainable, traditional methods. You’ll often find us cooking and sharing classic Costa Rican dishes like gallo pinto (rice and beans), homemade tortillas, fresh garden vegetables, and seasonal fruit picked right from the trees.

Because we’re a working farm focused on sheep and goat dairy, our approach to animal care is rooted in respect and natural cycles. When an animal is no longer part of the milking process, we honor its life by using its meat — nothing is wasted, and everything is done with intention and care.

We also fish locally and often enjoy meals prepared with freshly caught seafood. Alongside that, we raise chickens, ducks, and quails, which provide fresh eggs — and occasionally meat — as part of a closed-loop, sustainable food system.

Volunteers are always welcome to join in the cooking, learn local recipes, or share their own culinary traditions. Mealtimes here are more than just about food — they’re about slowing down, connecting with others, and nourishing both body and soul. It’s a big part of the pura vida way of life.

Life here flows with the rhythm of nature — peaceful, grounded, and closely tied to the land. Days are filled with sunshine, fresh mountain air, and sunsets that take your breath away. Evenings can be cool, so a light jacket or sweater will come in handy. For farm work, bring comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

We’re about 30 minutes from Sámara, where you’ll find beaches, surf breaks, shops, and restaurants. On your days off, you can go explore waterfalls, ride horses through the hills, wander local villages, or take hiking trails that start right from our doorstep. Public buses and shared rides make it easy to venture further if you’d like to see more of the region.

Because we’re in a rural mountain setting, the internet isn’t always as fast as in the city — but we see that as part of the charm. It’s a chance to slow down, step back from the rush of modern life, and really connect with nature and simple living.

Our goal is to create a warm, welcoming space where volunteers feel like part of the family. If you come with curiosity, an open heart, and a willingness to learn, you’ll leave with new skills, unforgettable memories, and a deeper connection to the animals, the land, and yourself.

There’s also regular public transport and shared rides if you feel like exploring farther. Even though we’re surrounded by nature, we stay connected — the sanctuary has fiber-optic internet, so working remotely, calling home, or watching a movie isn’t a problem. Just keep in mind that we’re still on the local power grid, so the occasional outage can happen — all part of the rural adventure.
