Our place is centered in one of the most urbanized areas of the world: Flanders, Belgium. 50% of Flanders is concrete. Our mission is to renaturalize these ecological wastelands. We turn grey into Green! If you want to give us a helping hand on this mission, we welcome you with open arms... We grow our food organically, small scale, we try to live as self sufficient as possible, we are vegetarians. We speak Dutch, French and English. We are a young couple. We started our non-profit organization only 5 years ago and we are in full development.

02/4: RE-GREENING A SCHOOL PLAY GROUND
We'll set up 6 water containers, fill them with soil with the kids and plant fruit trees and other perennial edibles in them.
08/4 till 23/04: 3 RAIN GARDENS
At 3 different locations we will set up a rain garden. In 1 case we dig out a pond or wadi, the other cases it is already done for us. We will be creative with the soil that is dug out, make little water play features for the kids (channels, water falls, mud pools,...), plant the wadi with swamp plants,...
12/5 till 23/5: SETTING UP A PRAIRIE GARDEN
We will plant a low maintenance, wild life attracting, prairie garden. We prepare the area for the goats, so they can eat away spontaneous wood storage in an other part of the garden. A fruit hedge with a lot of berry varieties will be planted.
09&10/06: GREEN ROOF
We'll plant an organic shaped green roof on an extension to a house in the neighborhood.
In the meanwhile, in between above projects we'll work in our OWN FOOD FOREST (seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting). We'll make a chicken coop above the compost heap, make a green roof on our garden shed, start up a natural swimming pond, planted with exotic edible swamp plants, chop wood...
We'll also organize a GREEN LUNG WORKSHOP. Inside our house we've made a green house, where we grow exotic plants that don't do it well in our climate outside. During this workshop we'll optimize the space: planting extra plants, creating more sunlight with mirrors, a heliostat, and other reflecting material, building flexible bridges,...
Let us know which projects that interest you and when you would like to come over. We prefer long term helpers (min 3 weeks) that commit themselves to complete a whole project together with us.
We frequently do experimental building/gardening workshops in and around our house as well as on other places.
As a volunteer you can help us with the these workshops and the preparation of it, as well as with everyday life on our quest to self-sufficiency. The goal of this way of working is worldwide exchange of knowledge and experiences and supporting the worldwide transition movement.
People who like to be creative and love gardening and being outside, are more than welcome. We appreciate and value every input from your side.
It is possible that for some jobs you have to use power tools or climb on roofs or in trees. So you will need an volunteer insurance if you wish to join us. (check out your work-exchange organization for the best type of insurance).
However, we will NEVER force you to do any job that you don't want to do.
We ask you to work 5 days out of 7, 4 to 5 hours a day.

In return you can live in our fully equipped attic, with 2 double beds and 1 single bed. It is always possible that you have to share the attic with other volunteers. There's also 1 private bedroom. The max amount of people is limited to 3 individuals or 2 couples. We like to eat good and tasty organic food. Everyday we’re at home you can join our delicious vegetarian meals. Most food is made of the vegetables we grow ourselves, or of what we get form local exchange programs. All our food is organic. We have an outdoor pizza oven. Maybe you can join us around the Taniwa, experiencing one of our famous pizzaparties. You can also use the kitchen in case you wish to cook something for yourself.
