Welcome travelers !

We are located just south of Edmonton Alberta on a 80 acre farm and somewhat of a hobby center.

We have Leonberger dogs and we usually have one or two litters a year. Our morning starts with feeding the dogs and cats as well as caring for puppies if we have any.

We are currently building another house on our property and that is a big part of our day. Any help you can give us is greatly appreciated. You will learn a lot about construction.

Most of the digging is done with the bobcat and other implements to make our work less of a task and more of a form of enjoyment to enjoy the country life.

We do have a garden most every year with a green house that we take pride in to do some of our special items such as tomatoes, cucumbers and different vegetables.

Some construction is usually done on the farm with changes in the home to accommodate more comfortable living area for the travelers. Also outdoor landscaping will be on our list of things to design and create.
So as you see we have a wide variety of things to take part in.

Time is made available for travelers to view our surrounding area to see what makes our area special as well.

My wife and I are mainly the ones that are mostly involved in the work around our farm. My wife is an ultra sound tech, semi retired and works occasional day shifts away from home. I have been involved in construction most of my life and have also been involved in the teaching profession in my early years.

We enjoy meeting people and we are happy to spend time with people from other countries to hear about their different styles of living.
If this is something you might enjoy you will find us easy to get along with. Our meals are usually a gathering of everyone at which time we plan the day or share the days activities.

We are contemplating giving an added gift of support for those who come and assist us with the spring work starting in March and through to May.
This will reflect the type of assistance some individuals can offer, ie experience.

We are not a business and we do not sell our farm produce off the acreage.

We cannot accommodate people that smoke unfortunately.

We look forward to meeting some of you in your travels.

We take time to teach various aspects of farm life, building , if applicable,and other tasks, making sure everyone understands why we do what we enjoy.

We work as a team, but There are opportunities to work independently as well. Be open-minded about what the day brings, as plans can change depending on what situation might arise.. Taking care of animals, gardening, planting trees, doing reno's,lawn mowing , yard clean-up, etc. There are different learning opportunities for you to participate in.

Our home is roomy with several bathrooms and bedrooms available. Everyone helps with cooking and cleaning in the home. Each person may have their own bedroom or may have to share a room depending on the gender and number of travelers we have.

If travelers would like to go to the city to enjoy the area, transportation can usually be arranged to get there. If we are planning to go to the city we can give you a ride in but if not there is Lyft and taxi that will come to the farm to pick you up. There are also buses from nearby Beaumont and Leduc that will take you directly into the city as well.

There are lots of beautiful hiking or walking trails in Edmonton and also in Leduc . Places like West Edmonton mall, Mutart conservatory, the museum, Telus World of Science, etc. are places you might enjoy seeing depending on your interests. There is also a popular Avenue called Whyte Avenue which tourists enjoy because of the different and unique stores that you can find.

I arrived at Wally and Marlene’s place in April, was supposed to stay with them for 3,5 weeks but ended up leaving the farm after 8 days.

The meals were very good, we had breakfast, lunch and dinner together with the hosts… read more and the other workawayers and usually had a big choice of different dishes or leftovers.

My time there basically started off with Wally saying he does everything best and this mindset was confirmed in how he treated the workawayers. You just couldn’t do anything right. He made comments about my clothes all the time (I was wearing hiking boots and a rainjacket), called me a princess and just generally made jokes in an insulting way by telling me what things I am bad at in his opinion.

Tasks included feeding the dogs in the morning and afternoon, as well as checking the coal shed (they heat the place with coal) in the morning and evening, and cleaning the Puppy Panel. These are set timed rounds that have to be done, for which us workawayers were put on a schedule. In between these rounds I did tasks like grooming dogs, gardening, cleaning house, picking up dog poop, collecting rocks on the property or repairing the greenhouse. They are also building a second house on their property which in my opinion was pretty much built by workawayers. I installed electrical outlets there and leveled the earth with the Bobcat. One day Wally and his grandson taught us blacksmithing which was a very cool experience and Wally also taught us the two step dance one evening.

I never really had the feeling of having time off, because between the set rounds you were assigned in the morning/afternoon/evening, you always had to be available for further tasks. In general, there is not much but fields around the farm and you can't get around without your own car. I didn't have a single day off in the 8 days and didn't leave the property, except for two evenings - one night a friend picked me up and another night us workawayers went into Edmonton by cab to a country club.

I would like to mention a few situations that have occurred. One day I went for a walk behind the farm in the field at about 4 pm, because there was nothing to do and I had told the other two workawayers, because they were outside as well. When I came back I got in trouble for not telling the hosts, after which I apologized. Wally wanted me to do some work in the greenhouse and asked several times ironically "do you really have time now or do you have to leave again soon?"
Another day I came into the living room with my laptop because I had something I needed to do. I stayed close to the hosts so that I would be available for any tasks and they would not have to look for me. I also asked if I should help in the kitchen, to which the answer from Wally was no. A few minutes later he comes up to me and asks "why aren't you doing anything?".
Third situation - one of the dogs was sick and had surgery. He had to be taken care of for a few days including at night, with fever measured and medicine given. The two other workawayers offered the host to take over these night shifts, but I didn't say anything, because I honestly thought we were already working much more than 25 hours a week. As a result, Wally looks at me unpleasantly again and says "what's wrong with you that you don't offer to do night shifts."
With these situations I would like to illustrate the dynamics a bit and show that we never really had a set time off.

Wally had also told me about a former Japanese workawayer who sneaked away from the farm one day (he saw this on the cameras in the yard). I'm not surprised, someone else must have felt very uncomfortable too.

I then found another workaway in Edmonton at short notice and had a conversation with the two hosts. I expressed that I do not feel very comfortable and it is better for me if I leave the farm. I said I would like to leave tomorrow but could stay one more day if they need to reorganize. Wally got very loud and said that he thought it was a great idea and that I should leave immediately. He said "You're such a Little Girl" to which I replied that he shouldn't call me that. He also said I should think about why I didn't like it on the farm or what wasn't working, to which I said I know what wasn't working. He then said "no you don't". I then went to my room and packed my suitcase as quickly as I could. Two of the other workawayers, with whom I got along well, then came to me to talk to me about what had happened. #redacted text#

He was definitely more conspicuous to me than to the other workawayers, which was perhaps due to the fact that I didn't put up with it and said that I didn't find his comments funny. All in all, I felt very taken advantage of, confined to the property, and really uncomfortable. I was very happy when I finally left and have never felt so free.

We had a nice time during 2 weeks at Marlene and Wally's place and got nice memories. They are nice people, the farm is lovely and the dogs are amazing. Too bad we couldn't find a common ground to get some free time for ourselves and had to face some bad temper. Get ready to work full days and be available at all times.
