Hello, and thanks for your interest in reading more about life and work at our eco lodge:-)!
We are now taking applications for a couple of positions starting from Feb 15 for 2-6 weeks. The projects during this time will be help to prepare the place for opening. Lots of helping Rory with repair jobs, tidying and cleaning, weeding and garden preparations, step repairs, brush burning, moving things around...
SHORT SUMMARY
Our project is a sustainably built and functional off grid retreat centre located in a valley where 2 rivers meet and not far from the Serra da Estrela Mountain Range (the highest point of mainland Portugal) which makes for dramatic beauty in nature. Since 2017 we have welcomed Workawayers to help us build, expand, and maintain the retreat center…. It has been a pleasure to meet so many beautiful people from across the globe and we’re really grateful for all the helping hands!
Workawayers enjoy the complete immersion in nature and get to learn about what is involved in living & working off grid.
Who is Who & Roles at the Off Grid Retreat Center....
Rory, Ashley - founders/owners
Rory - manages building, expansion and maintenance of the retreat centre plus works off-site as an engineer and builder for others
Ashley - oversees the management of the retreat business, volunteers plus is a Yoga Therapist and Compassionate Inquiry Facilitator
Hannah - kitchen & garden manager and retreat chef
She lives nearby and is here most days when retreats are going and about 1-2 times per week during the off season
Jaciara - live in manager
Workaway management, front of house coordination for retreat groups and in general on-site needs
Helen - marketing & social media manager, photography/videography
Manages the website and social media. Works on-site occasionally.
Workaway team - A transient group of 2-4 volunteers from all over the world normally with shared interests in nature, wellness and experiencing what communal life off grid and work at a retreat center is like. The team has an outdoor kitchen and shared bell tent for sleeping. Until we open for the season, volunteers sleep in the retreat center accommodation.
THE WORK AND LIFE HERE:
The retreat centre is a place for wellness in wild and breathtaking nature. It's essential that workawayers are happy to live with ALL the elements. Rain or shine. Hot or cold. Although we do have wifi, life here is basic and off the grid so modern day conveniences are not a reality here 100% of the time. Come for the beautiful space to be in nature, not to be able to be online all the time ;-).... If your life depends on being online every day, it is not a suitable place for you. We have reliable wifi but it's simply not the place to be on your screen all the time.
Volunteers have a rustic outdoor space exclusive for workawayers' use that has a fully functional kitchen. They also happily get some retreat food leftovers when we are open for the season.
The venue is alcohol, drug free and non-smoking. We aim to maintain a healthy, yogic and peaceful environment for all staying.
We accept and respect all food habits (vegans, veggies, meat eaters etc) and nutritional needs in the kitchen.
We run a retreat business so it's essential volunteers are mindful of holding an appropriate space for retreat participants. When on shift a professional attitude is 100% expected from volunteers. Team work mentality and willingness to multitask is essential and hospitality experience is preferred.
Off Grid:
We use Solar Power and so things that use a lot of electricity cannot be used if the sun is not there. Water comes from the land so we ask it is conserved (less than 5min showers etc).
Accommodation:
A shared dormitory (3-4 at a time) style Bell Tent or a normal camping tent. Both with quality twin size mattresses.
Bathrooms:
Compost toilets, solar heated shower.
More about Ashley & Rory:
Ashley - Yoga Teacher/Yoga Therapist and Lead Facilitator of 200 Hour RYS Yoga Teacher Trainings, Compassionate Inquiry (Gabor Mate) facilitator. Her background is working as a pediatric critical care nurse in the USA where she is from. After experiencing burnout, she took a break from nursing to travel around Central and South America for about 6 months where she got together with Rory.
Rory - Civil Engineer and Natural Builder who specializes in timber frames and originally from Ireland. His background is working as an Engineer in various roles, volunteering in Guatemala building eco friendly homes for families, and opening a couple of tourism businesses in Guatemala.
Together - we moved to Portugal (in 2017) and bought this river-front property with dreams of transforming it into something that would be benefit the land itself plus would provide a gorgeous space in nature for people to heal and enjoy. With the help of many, we've managed the invasive/non-native tree forest and have planted many native ones, built all of the buildings for the retreat centre and our home from natural materials, and opened for business as a retreat centre in 2019. We've hosted a variety of retreats, workshops and Yoga Teacher Trainings. We have retreat groups coming from all over the world to rent the venue for their retreats and trainings. Ashley runs a 3 week long Yoga Teacher Training during which she allows volunteer to join in on the morning practice as space allows.
What you can expect from us:
-accommodation and communal living as described above
-2 full consecutive days off to explore the area or relax here in nature -- swimming in the rivers and hiking the local trails as well as the use of paddle boards.
- As a business, workers from Workaway register on the books here to be paid the minimum hourly wage in Portugal but do not get meals included in the exchange
What we expect from you:
-25 hours per week, with 2 consecutive days off per week. (avg. 5 hours/day) and to plan for a 4 week stay minimum
-Outside of those hours, pitching in to keep the workaway communal spaces clean and share the cooking duties
-Respect of the spaces - both the retreat center and the private/communal areas
-fluent in English and/or Portuguese.
- As a business, Workaway requires that workawayers register on the books here to be paid the minimum hourly wage in Portugal but do not get meals included in the exchange
Work tasks include:
-cleaning spaces (room change overs, communal spaces used by the guests, toilets & showers, yoga spaces etc)
-natural swimming pool (cleaning, scooping algae etc)
-help in the kitchen (helping Hannah with chopping, grating etc)
-gardening (weeding, planting, watering)

The property and area around it is ideal for free outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking and Stand Up Paddle. There are plenty of river beaches in the area, and we have paddle boards available for use. With the Serra de Estrela mountain range nearby, there are plenty of breath-taking hikes. But if you want a break from the country side there's a train just 15 minutes from the project that connects to Lisbon, Porto, and anywhere else you'd like to discover on time off.
