These winter months (October-March) we will be constructing a gypsy wagon and furniture, maybe also an outdoor kitchen and glamping tents. If you have skills to help us with this, you can apply for winter-volunteering with us! You can stay in a room in the house.
Our place is a permaculture family homestead on the top of a hill in inland Croatia. We live a simple, healthy, holistic lifestyle as practical realists. We like to create a sustainable habitat by following nature's patterns.
We use permaculture principles to develop our terrain and our life. We care for the earth, for the people around us, for the future and we like to share our abundance with you.
People with their Permaculture Design Course certificate (PDC) are extra welcome to experience permaculture in practice!
Volunteering here is like having a permaculture retreat. You can learn about land based and social permaculture, designing for 12 hectares and smaller projects, and applying social permaculture. If you like you can work on your own designs or make a personal permaculture design to improve your life, while being on a beautiful permaculture homestead.
We live a simple, mostly self sufficient life off the land. We love to prepare delicious dishes with ingredients from the garden and our stable. We like to make our own (sourdough) bread, crackers, cookies, fruit wines, jams, syrups, sauerkraut, yogurt, mayonnaise, kimchi & kefir.
We collect various (medicinal) herbs for tea, tinctures and oils, cosmetic products, cleaning products and for the kitchen.
We live with quite some animals: 4 cats (mouse & squirrel catchers), 2 dogs (for fun and to guard the other animals), various amounts of rabbits (lawn mowers, for manure and meat) and chickens (compost turners, bug hunters, for eggs & meat), bees (but we are newbie beekeepers) and soon also turkeys, goats and sheep (terrain cleaners for milk, wool and meat). And Barbara wants a peacock.
The homestead is slowly turning into a permaculture nut farm where people can camp for a peaceful holiday in nature.
You can help us (4-5 hours per day, 5 days a week) with the garden, with cleaning parts of the terrain, making the camp site more beautiful and turning the terrain into an edible landscape. The animals need fences, the paths need wood chips mulch, we can do some pruning, taking care of the (polyculture, no dig) garden, composting and mulching with various methods, and you can help us with everyday tasks. Like making jam, drying fruits, collecting seeds, hunting bugs...
You stay for at least 3 weeks to be part of our life and get a good overview of all aspects of a fulfilling, sustainable life in the countryside.
You need a certain amount of independence, curiosity, flexibility and fun and don't mind dirty hands, curious cats and noisy kids :-)
If you eat vegan or your main motivation is consuming travelling and to have a cheap place to stay, please do not apply.
Please write a personal message (to Peter and Barbara) about you, what you want to learn, why, what we can learn from you, your skills and your dream future, so we can setup a good stay for you.
We get more than 400 requests a year so you need to make it a PERSONAL message with your motivation!

We like to share and exchange recipes, music (we have a piano, guitar, wooden flutes, djembe, cajon), inspiring movies, ideas, insights... Peter is a blacksmith, Barbara likes to work with wool (from raw sheep wool to yarn or felted purse) and she makes our own herbal health care (tinctures, oils, teas) and body care (face & hand creams).
You can learn about permaculture and personal development.
The help is seasonal, and varies from jam making to planting and pruning trees & berry shrubs, from weeding and mulching the garden to scything and raking up grass, preserving it as hay for the animals...
The work can also include making fences to keep animals in or out, or constructing new animal housing.
The work is varied, you'll learn about different ways of composting and you will definitely learn new ways of gardening!

Volunteers stay in a caravan or a tent, or in a room in the house, depending on the season.
We're situated on the top of a hill, inland Croatia. The village Vojnic is on a 45 minutes walk distance. In Vojnic there are bars with wifi and a library with computers & internet, and there are shops for groceries.
On Saturdays we sometimes go to the farmers market, to buy things that we don't produce ourselves (yet, or we are out of).
When it's hot, we go swimming in the river.
On a day off you could visit Rastoke (beautiful old, wooden village on the river) or the Plitvice lakes & waterfalls (UNESCO monument), or the nice city Karlovac (half hour bus drive). Also the capitol Zagreb is visitable (just over an hour with the bus).
