Beschreibung

We have so enjoyed hosting Workaway guests - and what positive experiences!

I'm an American originally from Wisconsin, living in Umbria, Italy for over 40 years. My husband Pino (Italian, from Sicily - 2 languages spoken in our house) and I farmed for over 12 years while raising our three children and I ran an English language school for adults and children here in the Assisi area. I became a registered Umbria tour guide in 1997: the only American authorized Regional Guide of Umbria.

I have also taught Umbrian rural cuisine here in our Assisi farmhouse (and formally, also in the U.S. each year in Feb/Mar)

Our farmhouse overlooks our olive groves and vineyard here in the rolling hills outside of Assisi (7 km from one of the world's most stunning medieval hill towns) - the location is one reason our Workaway guests love it here.

Another highlight? Accomodations: own studio apt right behind our farmhouse, built in stone by husband Pino - beamed ceilings and own patio out front with views! We have a vegetable garden and chickens offering fresh veggies and eggs daily. My husband raises goats, we have three donkeys, two Maremanno sheep dogs and cats...

Here on our land, you can learn much about rural Umbrian life and also Italian as my husband Pino does not speak English.. Helping me in the kitchen, you can also learn traditional Umbrian rural cuisine. As a I am an Umbrian tour guide, I'm happy to share information on our wonderful region of Umbria. We live in the Natural Park of Mount Subasio which offers many gorgeous treks and a fresh water stream below our house - for a dip in the summer. Our region is full of beauties to visit, some of which are easily reachable with train or bus from Assisi - though having your own car is a bonus as it is easy and gorgeous to drive around!

At times, we might have you sharing the apartment with another Workawayer so kindly let us know if you do not enjoy staying in company.

We need some help in our house. i.e., general cleaning, help in the kitchen and cooking with me (I will teach you all the secrets of Italian cuisine!).

We need help on the land, watering and weeding - weather permitting. Fowl and goats need to be fed daily and the goats' stall cleaned out.

I often post short videos on my YouTube channel -ask me for the link - and so simple video editing skills appreciated.

We have 2 rental apartments on our land, as well but all cleaning is done by paid professional help.

We live on 4 hectares/8 acres and have olive trees, a small vineyard, a small vegetable garden, some fruit trees, goats, a few chickens, a couple donkeys. We also have two friendly sheep dogs and and 5 friendly cats (outdoor animals): abandoned ones that adopted us!

Studio apartment with a double bed, bathroom with shower and fully-equipped kitchen and free wifi. The apartment is in a separate building from the main house, with two other apartments (which are sometimes rented to tourists). An outdoor space is yours with a table for meals outdoors. There is limited transportation to and from town, so having your own car would be a great plus! BUT, we are often heading to town and happy to give you a ride quite often,

I think it is important for future volunteers to understand that this is a very work-focused Workaway rather than a cultural … read more exchange. While Anne shared local recommendations and her knowledge as a tour guide, my experience was centered on helping with her daily responsibilities and adapting to her schedule and priorities. The cultural exchange aspect was limited, and the main focus was the service I could provide. When we first arrived, the environment was somewhat chaotic as we learned the routine and expectations. The tasks themselves were generally simple, but communication was the biggest challenge.
Anne has a very direct, demanding, and highly task-focused communication style. Her tone could sometimes be blunt or critical, especially when giving feedback or pointing out mistakes. Our work was mostly corrected rather than acknowledged, even when circumstances outside of our control were involved. Conversations were often very task-oriented, and the communication style may not suit everyone. I also witnessed another Workawayer often being spoken to in a way that I found quite harsh, to the point that she became very upset on several occasions and was brought to tears. This contributed to an atmosphere that could sometimes feel tense.
Future volunteers should be aware that Anne is very spontaneous, and the daily routine can change depending on what she wants you to do. While the main tasks are generally explained, the full list of responsibilities may not always be clear from the beginning, as additional tasks will arise during the day. Anne is very focused on standards and completing tasks, and her feedback can be direct and critical. She was very intentional about pointing out our mistakes, to the point of taking the trouble to message us about them, once we had already left. Volunteers who are sensitive to criticism or who prefer a softer, more encouraging communication style may find this placement challenging. A flexible attitude, independence, and comfort with adapting to Anne's changing needs are important for this Workaway.

If you are thinking of volunteering, you should also carefully consider the location and transportation. The property is about 8 km from Assisi, but the walk is not an easy 8 km. It is mountainous, with uphill sections, and during the summer heat it can be physically demanding. Anne kindly offered rides into town or picked us up if she was nearby, but transportation depended entirely on her schedule. If your main goal is to travel and explore Assisi, and if you do not have a vehicle, this arrangement may be more challenging. However, for volunteers who are primarily coming to work, experience the rural countryside, and who are comfortable with an unstructured routine, this location may be a good fit. Food was simple but sufficient, consisting mainly of pasta, leftovers, rice, bread, and fruit. Anne shared leftovers from meals with us to keep in the fridge for later and made sure we always had plenty of fruit available, which we appreciated. The food was straightforward and home-style, although volunteers should be aware that it was not very varied. During our stay, Anne kindly would share her extensive knowledge of Assisi as a tour guide by recommending places to visit, helping us with the Map of Assisi, and offered rides when she was able to. She also treated us to a gelato at the end of our stay, which was an unexpected gift. Pino even took us to the train station once, which we appreciated.
Overall, this Workaway is a good fit if you are looking for a work-focused placement, a rural setting, and are comfortable with a very direct communication style, changing routines, and adapting to Anne's needs.

Elle est aussi guide touristique alors elle va facilement travailler dans les villes environnantes en journée. Cela peut être pratique lors d’un jour de repos car elle propose de nous y emmener. Pendant sa visite, on peut alors profiter de visiter la ville et on rentre ensemble.
Pour ce qui est du travail, il y a la fois des tâches ménagères à effectuer en intérieur, des tâches en extérieur avec les animaux et du montage vidéo. Il faut aussi s’occuper des plantes, passer le balai sur la terrasse et de pleins de petits tâches que Anne pourrait donner à faire. Pour ma part, j’ai surtout fait du ménage car la femme de ménage salariée était malade alors je l’ai remplacée. Anne dispose de 2 airbnb, à chaque départ je m’occupais de les nettoyer. J’ai très peu travaillé en extérieur.
La communication a été compliquée avec Anne, nous recevons beaucoup de liste de choses à faire par whats app. Elle peut aussi donner des ordres régulièrement dans la journée si elle pense à quelque chose à faire (faire son ménage, faire son lit…), il faut donc être flexible. Elle passe aussi le soir dans le logement pour dire les choses à faire le lendemain. Anne est aussi exigeante, le travail peut souvent être mieux fait. Je n’ai pas toujours apprécié le ton employé pour s’adresser à moi. Dans ce cas-là, il convient de lui dire afin que la situation s’améliore.
Dans ce workaway, il n’y a pas réellement de partage avec les hôtes car ils sont très occupés, je pense qu’ils ont l’habitude d’en recevoir beaucoup. Le workawayer est surtout là pour travailler et entretenir la propriété.
Un studio est mis à disposition des workawayer qui doit toujours rester parfaitement propres, les lits fait et aucune vaisselle apparente. Anne peut aussi y entrer à n’importe quel moment si elle a besoin de prendre quelque chose, apporter à manger ou nous dire ce qu’on a à faire.
Je devais rester une semaine mais ne me sentant pas très à l'aise, j’ai préféré partir au bout de quelques jours.

Anne&Pino's house is absolutely charming, their animals are adorable, and it is certainly the cleanest place I have had among all my workaways.
However, I regret that I did not have more opportunity to interact with my hosts and that the communication was not always ideal. Besides the fact that I didn't speak Italian and Pino didn't speak English (which made conversation difficult), Anne&Pino are so organized and meticulous that almost half of our conversations revolved around things I should have done better. I was a bit confused during my first few days because there were 10 times more rules to follow than with my other 4 Italian hosts. Moreover, Anne is a very direct and frank person. These character traits added to the numerous rules gave me at the beginning the incessant impression to be corrected on my work. This was very stressful for me the first few days and made me feel not really at home. I later realized that it was just their way of organizing and communicating and that it was nothing personal, which allowed me to enjoy the rest of my week. The workawayer before me and the one after me left after only two or three days certainly for these reasons. Also, my experience will certainly be different than the one you will have, because I was lucky enough to stay in Anne&Pino's house. Usually workawayers stay in a separate apartment and therefore don't have the chance to enjoy Anne's good food or even interact with the family as often. Despite the fact that I was in the main house, this was the workaway where I had the least opportunity to interact and share with my hosts. I highly recommend this workaway if: you are an organized and meticulous person, you are flexible enough to adapt to the many rules of the house, and you like to be on your own (reading, walking... as the place is really ideal for these activities).
After the first complicated days, I was able to really enjoy my experience. Anne was always very attentive to me, suggesting things to do, giving me all kinds of advice, making sure I always had everything I needed. Anne also offered me many rides to discover the beautiful city of Assisi. 😊
I think you really have to get to know them to realize that they are people with a big heart. If only they had taken more time with me, I think this experience could have been really rally great.
