    Description

We are a small team with one person living in a shared apartment in central Palermo. We welcome those from all backgrounds and invite you to enjoy all that Palermo has to offer.

Our main project is renovating the shared apartment that volunteers will be staying in. Other tasks include, but are not limited to, laundry, collecting deliveries, basic maintenance and DIY, organization and cleaning, etc.

The work is low intensity, giving plenty of time to explore the city. At the same time, we expect that volunteers will be available when required and apply themselves to whatever tasks that they are assigned.

We are looking for a responsible person that can work independently, learn quickly, and adapt to established processes as well as new tasks. Much of the help will be independent and require someone who is self-motivated and reliable to complete the assigned jobs.

If you are interested please tell us about yourself and we can arrange to connect over a phone call.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

This opportunity is best suited to an independent person who is, for the most part, comfortable working and living on their own. There are also times when others will be around and the project intensity changes with the seasons

You will be living in a traditional Sicilian neighborhood with convenient access to the vibrant city centre, historic sights of Palermo, and many shops. We also have bicycles you may use to ride around town or visit the sea side.

We are happy to teach you new skills as required and look forward to growing and developing together as we aim to improve our surroundings.

  • Help

    Help

The work involves a combination of assigned daily tasks, longer-running/ongoing projects, and on-call assignments.

Daily tasks - Hanging linen, clean the kitchen, organise the tool shed, and deliveries. The daily tasks will evolve depending on what projects we are undertaking, but will be clearly outlined when you arrive so that you can independently manage your daily responsibilities.

Ongoing projects (improvements and maintenance) - Depending on candidate proficiencies and interests, we will undertake various tasks to maintain and improve every aspect of what we are doing and will allow volunteers to manage these tasks in times that are convenient for them.

On-call assignments - This is for all things that pop up in daily life, a package being delivered, a key to be cut, maintenance or replacement of broken items, help with something that was not expected. These tasks will happen from time to time and we will try and find the best way to manage these issues together as they arise.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We offer accommodation (amenities include WiFi) in a simple but functional apartment just outside the historic centre of Palermo. The living arrangement is shared living much like a hostel but as everyone has significant commitments this offer is not intended for people primarily looking for a social exchange and candidates should expect to spend majority of time pursuing their own interests in the city.

The space includes a bedroom, a living room, a simple kitchen with gas stove and oven, and a simple bathroom. The apartment has all basic amenities and although there will be other people moving around during daylight hours, it will be quiet and relaxed with greater privacy during the evening.

There is a small terrace which is primarily used for hanging washing, but there is space to enjoy a coffee. There is also a condominium rooftop terrace in the building which can be used during certain hours, with respect to neighbours and quiet hours.

The location is just outside the historic centre, within 20 minutes walking of the main transport hubs of Palermo and the entire historic centre, as well as other major attractions of the city. The area is mostly families from the working class of Palermo and you will have exposure to many typical Palermitan experiences. The closest decent super market is about 10 minutes walk, but you also have pastry shops, vegetable vendors, butcher and fish monger immediately nearby the apartment. There are also several cafes in the area.

We have bikes that you can borrow to explore the city.

During busy periods where volunteers work in excess of 3 hours per day we will provide food as part of the exchange.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are all avid traveller and often there are many of us away from Palermo at any moment in time. We all continue to liaise with each other and stay involved with what is happening but the dynamic of the group will change depending on what projects we are undertaking and who is present in Palermo and for how long.

In this position, we are happy to be flexible with people. For those who want to be more engaged, we have various pipeline ideas that we could launch and, at quieter times in the project, we are happy for volunteers to take a more passive involvement and just be available for important tasks as required.

During the warmer months, we participate in various outdoor activities including rockclimbing, kitesurfing, paragliding, mountain biking, trekking, etc. But also enjoy quiet activities like chess, going to the beach, or socialising with great conversations.

There is a 3 week minimum stay.
