Tim was an experienced brick layer and was also brilliant in turning his hand to the local flint stone here , lime pointing on the house and starting a flint staircase to our garden (hoping he will maybe come back to finish off !).
What’s so satisfying for us , is having these highly skilled professionals who can really leave there mark on this wonderful site . To also see, how they really seem to enjoy helping us achieve these wonderful milestones .

Het huis Sand ,de tuinen en de omgeving in Devon,ongeveer 5 km van de kust, zijn fantastisch. Het prachtige huis wordt met veel liefde en aandacht gerestaureerd en ingericht. De tuinen zijn in oude glorie hersteld en waren nu in het vroege voorjaar al schitterend. In de weken dat ik er was hebben we een start gemaakt met een moestuin. In de omgeving kun je eindeloos wandelen door de groene heuvels en natuurlijk kun je het costpath gaan lopen.
Dus op alle gebieden een hele mooie ervaring ,fijne mensen en een fantastische plek.
Ik kom zeker nog een keer terug.

This is our second visit to Sand. First was last year when we stayed for 6 weeks and this time 3 weeks.
An immense project and restoration of the property and out buildings. Such a lovely place to spend time and even more special when the sun is shining to be able to enjoy the gardens and views over the valley.

We have been involved in a wide variety of tasks from stripping paint and wall paper,sanding and priming woodwork. Gardening and weeding and laying a stone path.

It’s taken me a few days to leave this review , as it’s difficult to put into words what this amazing young man has done for myself and my family over the last 9 months.
His abilities and skills have no bounds and I can honestly say I was continuously surprised by how he could adapt and learn from every situation he was confronted with. This is a
… read more challenging and large restoration project of an historic house of national interest and Michael excelled in this environment . He is an extremely creative craftsman , but has a great down to earth and practical ability to deal with anything that came up and there was plenty to get his teeth into ! Michael can look at anything from carpentry ,electrics and plumbing to fixing anything mechanical .
I really cannot say enough about this wonderful person , who literally turned this project on its head and has given us the determination to keep going !
We are hoping very much that he and his very talented new wife will come back next year to continue this fascinating collaboration .

Matt and his family were very welcoming and so were the other Workawayers. The location is stunning and the house is beautiful work in progress. The grounds and the surrounding area are so peaceful and relaxing that you will always feel invigorated at the start of every day and ready for a day of work.

… read more variety of projects available, I was able to fully experience every aspect of Sand from high-quality restoration to crawling through the attic running internet cables. There really is something for everyone to get stuck into.
I also learnt a variety of new skills from other Workawayers who were staying there too. I can honestly say this has been one of the most enjoyable work experiences that I've ever had. I wasn't rushed for unrealistic deadlines meaning I could be much more detailed with my work and really enjoy the process.
One of my favourite jobs was to restore the original bell pulls and the correct bells for the front and side doors (each bell has a different note so the staff could tell by ear which had been rung) and all the cables that made them work. Speaking to the previous owners, they said that they hadn't worked for 2 generations!
I hope that Matt and his family managed to get as much out of this exchange as I did and hope to be back in the future!
Michael was immediately able to fit into our project. Very proactive and social and was willing to have a go at everything. Outgoing and experienced in a variety of skills . I would absolutely recommend him to other hosts and hope he does return one day.

Wonderful people. Fitted into our team perfectly and were an enormous help in the garden , achieving many tasks in the few days they were with us.

Gustavo and I spent 3 weeks at this place and enjoyed every day there. Matt picked us up from the train station on the day we arrived, and the other volunteers were very kind and generous with us.

My work was physical which is what i prefer. Always varied, predominately gutting the engine room, kitchen, and the occasional stint in the gardens preparing them for upcoming guests.
I rarely do workaways where there are other workaways but this one was by far the best. Social, great team, and hard workers. I never felt like I was carrying all the load, and had a laugh with everyone involved.
I am excited to see the house finished and for the family to manifest their vision for the property and grounds (make sure you read the vision board)
I loved sitting in the garden early mornings before work, stretching and taking in the diverse nature which is highly recommended before beginning the day.
Note to workawayers- If you like Coffee Mocha or the Cornish Bakery in Sidmouth are your best option.

Sand is immersed in history, each turning of a corner like looking back centuries in a glance. … read more such a thing. Matt has grand plans indeed for Sand, a venue for music, a quaint cafe, luxury appartments, aboritums, gardens, and if asked, he will vehementaly deny the menagery.
More practically, my room is spacious, the food provided better than expected, and the work is neither too arduous nor tedious. Matt is a welcoming host, Gertrude his wife is lovely, and the kids are rambunctuosu terrors, but they're alright, really.
Devon is a beautiful county, while Sidmouth is a sweet little seaside town with all the amenities you could need; but Exeter isn't too far away for more city sights and nightlife, and the buses are frequent. Beautiful location, good variety of work and although Matthew is a very busy man with the super massive project he has taken under his wings, with also taking care of his young family, he tries his upmost to keep everyone happy
The work involved here would suit an experienced horticultaralist/gardener and a person who isn't afraid of hard work

I am a handyman by trade and was at a loose end having recently returned to the UK from South Africa and waiting to move to what is to be my new home in Wales. I was interested in the scope of Matt's renovation project; as well as hoping to do something more useful than sit around, I also figured that it would be helpful to get used to local trade

I spent a total of three weeks at Sand and had a great time working with Matt and Jerry, plus I learned a LOT which will most likely be of assistance when I start renovation of my cottage up in Mid Wales.
The location of Sand is truly lovely, despite that it was absolutely freezing weather during my stay, Matt and Jerry were great to work with, and I was well looked after by the family.
As well as working (very hard) I did manage the odd walk to the local pub and a trip to the seaside on the weekend, some great walks including a lovely one from Branscombe to Beer on a sunny Sunday.
If you are up for some physical labour and have an eye for detail this is a wonderful opportunity to do something really quite unique. The work was hard at times but I always felt rewarded for my efforts. Both in payment and in trips to the local pub etc. The accommodation was amazing. The location beautiful and was very close to the beach, costal path and train station.
I would recommend this place to anyone who has skills that they want to put to good use. … read more project on their hands. There are lots of different projects to be worked on with this property. I also met a few other people that we're working on this project that we're all there to help out in one way or another like his brother and Martin the digger driver. it was good to be part of a team and they were all nice people, I wish them well in the future. Unfortunately I was only here for a month, however I had a great time and I will be sure to visit in the future to see how it's all coming along. The main projects that were happening at the time was mainly Gardening and hard landscaping and we got quite a bit of work done in that month, nice to see such big changes happen and the re landscaping go on whilst I was there. I hope Andy and Oce are doing well and i was glad to meet both of you my fellow Workawayers.

a very nice family, in a very nice house on a very nice location makes for an excellent workaway place. … read more tasks are varied (from very simple to next level construction) but Matt is always there to help and you can always discuss if you dont/cant do something (i.e. I cant deal with heights well so we worked together on such tasks). There are a lot of things to be done and you will never get bored but all this comes in a cosy and very welcoming environment. It was a really good experience to work in this proyect, Matt is hardly working on building the house for his family and I learned a lot about building. The head builder is always open to teach about building stuff.

We were all the time involved with the musicians, organizing schedules and the venues for the concerts. All the time I had a lot of fun: I loved the conversation with the musicians, the concerts were fabulous, the food in the south of Spain is super tasty and we had a lot of time to spend together and enjoy the atmosphere.
For me it was an opportunity of a life-time indeed. I really apreciate the chance that Matt gave me and I´m really grateful for that! In fact I loved how I personally connected with Matt and I would love to work with him for the whole year!!!
Thank you very much for this unforgettable experience, Matt. It was definitely one of the highlights of my 9 months trip in Europe!!
