Dating back to the 1650s, the Rio Carnival celebration was organised to honour the Greek wine gods. The festival “Entrudo” was introduced by the Portuguese and this inspired the birth of Carnival in Brazil. Fast forward to today, over 2 million people take to the streets to enjoy food, music and dance in a street celebration like no other.

While it’s a popular party destination and a haven for nature lovers, is Brazil safe to visit?
Unfortunately the country struggles with one of the highest rates of income inequality in the world which in turn encourages crime. Thankfully, these rates have been declining in recent times. The majority of crimes are gang related, which means they are rarely targeting tourists.
The shanty towns of Rio (known as favelas) are unfortunately one of the areas that struggle with high gang activity, so it is advised for visitors to avoid these areas. Instead, the country’s capital, Brasilia as well as Florianopolis, Curitiba, Fernanda de Noronha, and Belo Horizonte are considered some of the safest destinations in Brazil, and have the lowest crime rates in the country.
This doesn't mean you should avoid the big cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Although they have higher crime rates (naturally cities usually do) they are still popular places with visitors. Follow our safety tips , especially if travelling solo and always stay vigilant.
On the topic of safety for visitors, there are two particular areas we want to highlight - Carnival and the beach. Thieves target beaches as a) there’s lots of tourists there and b) they know you’ll likely leave your belongings and jump in the sea for a swim. For this reason, pack the minimum such as a towel, swim suit and a little cash if needed. Never bring valuables or leave valuables unattended.
While Carnival is a magnet for tourists and locals who like to party, this also means it’s popular with pick-pocketers. Unfortunately, women travelling solo should also take extra caution as the large crowds can result in groping incidents or getting lost easily.
