Regístrate para ser anfitriónWelcome to Brazil, the land of samba, sunshine, and spectacular scenery! Whether you're a culture vulture, a beach bum, or an adventure seeker, Brazil promises to satisfy your wanderlust. With its epic natural beauty, vibrant cities, and welcoming people, you can expect an unforgettable travel experience. From the famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro to the indigenous communities of the Amazon rainforest, Brazil has something to offer every type of traveller. Grab your passport, it’s time to head to the land of the carnival spirit!
Measuring an astonishing 8.5 million square kilometres, Brazil is the largest country in both South and Latin America. Home to over 217 million people, it is also the seventh most populous country in the world.
While Brazil is renowned for its stunning beaches, such as the iconic Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro and the tranquil Praia do Espelho in Bahia this country’s allure goes beyond its coastlines. The cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, boast a vibrant nightlife, incredible food, and a wealth of cultural experiences for all budgets.
One of the most fascinating traits of Brazil is its fusion of diverse traditions and influences. Whether it's the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of Salvador or the Portuguese architecture of Paraty, Brazil is a melting pot of culture. Best of all, with plenty of Workaway hosts in Brazil to choose from , it could not be easier to live like a local and explore the culture first hand.
What’s more fun than living like a local? Partying like a local! And nowhere else can party like Brazil! Rio de Janeiro is home to the world famous Carnival festival, a six day samba filled extravaganza that takes place every February before Lent.
Dating back to the 1650s, the Rio Carnival celebration was organised to honour the Greek wine gods. The festival “Entrudo” was introduced by the Portuguese and this inspired the birth of Carnival in Brazil. Fast forward to today, over 2 million people take to the streets to enjoy food, music and dance in a street celebration like no other.
So what are you waiting for? Pack your backpack and samba your way to the airport - it’s time for a beautiful Brazilian adventure.
While it’s a popular party destination and a haven for nature lovers, is Brazil safe to visit?
Unfortunately the country struggles with one of the highest rates of income inequality in the world which in turn encourages crime. Thankfully, these rates have been declining in recent times. The majority of crimes are gang related, which means they are rarely targeting tourists.
The shanty towns of Rio (known as favelas) are unfortunately one of the areas that struggle with high gang activity, so it is advised for visitors to avoid these areas. Instead, the country’s capital, Brasilia as well as Florianopolis, Curitiba, Fernanda de Noronha, and Belo Horizonte are considered some of the safest destinations in Brazil, and have the lowest crime rates in the country.
This doesn't mean you should avoid the big cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Although they have higher crime rates (naturally cities usually do) they are still popular places with visitors. Follow our safety tips , especially if travelling solo and always stay vigilant.
On the topic of safety for visitors, there are two particular areas we want to highlight - Carnival and the beach. Thieves target beaches as a) there’s lots of tourists there and b) they know you’ll likely leave your belongings and jump in the sea for a swim. For this reason, pack the minimum such as a towel, swim suit and a little cash if needed. Never bring valuables or leave valuables unattended.
While Carnival is a magnet for tourists and locals who like to party, this also means it’s popular with pick-pocketers. Unfortunately, women travelling solo should also take extra caution as the large crowds can result in groping incidents or getting lost easily.
Finally, as always, don't forget travel insurance! Not only will it cover you from lost or stolen belongings, but it can also cover medical costs, cancelled flights and more.
Now you’re armed with reasons to visit and our top safety tips, it’s time to plan where to go. Brazil is divided into 26 states that fall under five distinct regions - North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South.
With the Amazon rainforest to the North, the sunny beaches of the Northeast, The epic Pantanal wetlands in the Central West and the bustling cities of the South East it can be tough to choose where to start!
Each region has its own unique characteristics, which we’ve summarised to help building your Brazilian bucket list easier…
The North Region is known for its vast Amazon rainforest, which covers more than half of Brazil's total land area. The region is home to numerous indigenous communities, unique wildlife, and breathtaking natural scenery.
Highlights of North Region
The Northeast Region boasts an exciting mix of African, indigenous, and European influences. Visitors can explore the region's colonial architecture, enjoy the postcard perfect beaches, join party revellers in Salvador and devour delicious food.
The traditional Bahian food from this region is particularly worth writing home about. Favourites include, Cocada, a coconut candy; moqueca, a coconut milk based fish stew; acarajé, the black-eyed pea fried dough ball loaded with sauces and spicy seafood and carengejo, a Brazilian crab dish.
Highlights of the Northeast Region
The Central-West Region is Brazil's agricultural heartland. Here you can expect vast expanses of savannah, wetlands, and cattle ranches. It’s one of the best regions to learn about the traditional cowboy culture, and enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and birdwatching.
Highlights of Central-West Region
The Southeast Region is home to Brazil's largest cities, including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The region is known for its vibrant nightlife, diverse cuisine, and of course, those stunning beaches! Not forgetting the historical colonial towns and natural wonders such as the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range which are equally epic.
Highlights of Southeast Region
The South Region is known for its European influence, thanks to a large population of German and Italian descendants. Explore the region’s charming towns, enjoy wine tastings, and embrace Brazil's colder climate.
In particular, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul are the Brazilian states farthest from the equator line. This means they are considered the coldest destinations in the country. In these areas, temperatures can fall below zero (and even experience snow!) Generally, the average minimum temperature varies from 6 to 12 °C so if you’re visiting the South during Winter you may need to switch the SPF for a scarf!
Highlights of South Region
