Not only did they welcome me to feel comfortable living in their home for this time - they even introduced me to their extended family, took me out to karaoke, invited me to watch the Euro finals at their local tennis club, let me take part in the fun and games of their older daughter's birthday party, and gave me some solid life advice when I asked for it.
Just before I stayed with them, I had gone through some major life changes, so the routine of walking the girls to school in the mornings, walking them home in the afternoons, and sharing meals with the family was grounding and soothing. I even had plenty of free time to explore London and get into a good routine at the local gym.

We love cycling in the local countryside
We were very fortunate to backpack around Singapore, Malaysia and Borneo in the summer.
We have lots of great walks on our doorstep, you can almost see our house from the top of this hill.
Meeting up with our good friends and previous workaway guests in Spain
We are an easy train ride from London (the girls are a bit bigger than this now!)
Brighton beach is just 1 hr away, we have previously coordinated a day trip with workaways on their day off
You can almost see our house from the top of Croham Hurst woods, our favourite walk from home.
We have a nice big garden that the kids love to play in

I spent two amazing months with this family and I enjoyed my time with them very much!
The work consists of spending time with the girls (Pippa, 6 years old and Emmie, 4 years old), cooking and cleaning and household tasks.
A typical day might look like: helping the girls to get ready for school and walking them there (school starts at 9.00 am)
… read more and then picking them up again (3.00 pm) and spending the afternoon with them. They are very kind and sweet children and love playing (for example boardgames, with barbies, dressing up, being on the trampoline, …), they always come up with ideas and we had lots of fun!
There are two people staying with the family at the same time, therefore the second person (who doesn’t spend time with the girls at the moment) does more household and cleaning stuff, usually vacuuming, deep cleaning, laundry, doing the dishes, other random tasks, which is totally doable ….
We always alternated with these two “positions”. I got friend with the other girl and it’s great to have someone to talk to, to explore with and for sharing responsibility!!
In the evening we were responsible for cooking dinner for everyone, which I really enjoyed.
Fiona and Ben are really kind and flexible people, we always found a solution and they made sure everyone is happy. You can clearly tell that they are very experienced hosts, they helped me at the beginning to get used to everything, making sure I am comfortable with the tasks, and they have lots of tips for London and the surrounding area in store. Also, they helped me to improve my English and solving any other kind of problem. In general I felt very comfortable and at home.
The room I was staying in was big and bright and I shared a bathroom with the other girl.
It takes about 20 minutes to get into central London by train, I usually used my days off to explore the city (often the Wednesday and one day at the weekend). Train fares are quite expensive, just be prepared for that. London is amazing, there is endless stuff to see and do. In the surrounding areas there are some cute coffee shops and you can go for nice walks.

Nicole is trustworthy and reliable, she's been responsible for getting the girls to school on time, keeping them occupied when we're busy working, and they've enjoyed trips out with her. She's both respected by them and they have fun with her - which is a difficult balance to find. On the housework side, she is organised and proactive in keeping on top of things. I've been particularly impressed with her cooking - working out what everyone likes to eat and having dinner ready without me needing to provide any input. And definitely try her baking!! From a social perspective, Nicole is easy to get on with and chat to, great at Karaoke (!) and unobtrusive to share a home with; she naturally knows when we're in a sociable mood and when we've had a long day and need our own space. She embraces the spirit of workaway, working hard to be a fantastic help to us, and making the most of the exploration and the cultural opportunities the stay offers. All in all she'll be missed and we hope our paths will cross again in the future.

You do a mixture of childcare and cleaning, its not ‘hard work’ (except for cleaning up at the end of the day sometimes- haha; D). The house is beautiful, very confortable, with a great view and garden. There are many parks around and it's easy to go to center of London (the station is very close to their house and it's a 25min by train to Victoria).

Staying with them, you will also get the pleasure of knowing George and Jess well (Ben’s brother and sister-in-law) who are amazing people and parents to the most clever one-year-old, Sophie. I really grew to care for Pippa, Emmie, and Sophie during my time with them and they were such a joy to look after, genuinely very happy and sweet children. Taking care of the girls was the majority of the “work” along with household chores, cooking, and the occasional gardening task. Fi is very organized and flexible with the weekly rota which makes it clear when you will be contributing your work hours. Ben and Fi are both transparent with the tasks that need to be done and give helpful guidance. There's always a multitude of activities to do around the house and with the kids, I especially enjoyed baking with them, reading stories, and going for walks. Despite lockdown, I had a nice time exploring the local area as there are lots of beautiful parks in the South Croydon area and endless walking trails. … read more always willing to help out if you have any questions about the train, places to go, how to get deals and whatever - they are very knowledgeable when it comes to getting around London (or anywhere really) and will save you aggravation, time and money. The train station is literally a minute's walk away and can easily get you to London Bridge or Victoria Station in about 20 minutes. The bottom line is that felt like family here and had a hard time leaving everyone behind. … read more most adorable girls in the world. Taking care of them is the main activity to do and the kids are fun, sweet and well behaved. We also did some gardening, cleaning, and other normal things.
We really enjoyed our stay and we really recommend them because they made us feel part of their family and we are very thankful for that. They allowed us to stay despite of the situation and it was easy to live at their home because the communication, respect and honesty with each other have been always part of the routine.
We're gonna miss our little sweet girls so much, saying goodbye to the family was heartbreaking! They prepare us a "Goodbye English tea party" (Fiona loves baking and her food is sooo great) with presents and we got to share time with the family (the uncle and the aunty) at their big backyard beautiful garden (Lots of cultural exchange). Also, Ben took us to the beach one day to enjoy Brighton in our free day.
We really really plan to come back because we felt like home with them (we had bikes for each of us so we could do some sightseeing around the area and sometimes further than expected). The house is great, the area is excellent to explore London and they are a warm welcoming family. Pippa loves learning new languages and Emmie smiles all the time. … read more come downstairs every morning! They are especially proactive in recognising what needs to be done around the house and just get on with it, even outside their formal working hours. We have been living in close quarters due to lockdown and have found they are easy to get on with and to chat to, their English is excellent, we haven’t had any problems in communication, they are happy to entertain themselves and explore the local area in their free time, and have respected all the social distancing guidance.

This was my first workaway experience and I had a great time! They are a wonderful, young family living 20 km from the city center of London (very well connected by public transports). … read more right time and activities, she loves you and warms you with laughs and hugs! Emmie is a sweet sweet sweet baby you'll fall in love with after 5 minutes being with her. It was very hard for me to leave them!
I used to work 5 hours per day, helping the family cleaning the house (kitchen, kids' room, toilet...very normal things) and spending time with the kids (I felt so emotional when Emmie falled asleep in my arms <3 ), preparing Pippa for school or making an easy lunch, or helping before bedtime.
We cooked together different times, making pasta and pizza :) I enjoyed sharing lunch with Fiona, about dinner the hours we were used to were too different hehe. I think this experience could have been better only if it would have lasted longer, as I felt three weeks were not enough to know each other.
I appreciated so much the fact that the family was very easy-going and open-minded. I was totally free during the day to do whatever I wanted in and out the house, you have full access to the kitchen and a wonderful room with private bathroom. The house is big and reeeally beautiful!
What else...dear Fiona and Ben, thank you so much for hosting me, I had an amazing time and I miss you every day! I am really waiting for you in Pompei...let's keep in touch, I am looking forward to seeing you again!!
