    Description

Please, when contacting us, write us only in Spanish.

We are a Mayan family living on the outskirts of our community called Chunhuhub, located in the heart of the Mayan Zone of Quintana Roo, which has several indigenous communities.
Our family has created a project focused on community tourism, seeking the preservation and safeguarding of our culture, as well as environmental awareness. We have a restaurant and rustic cabins (made of palm and wood, according to the traditional concept of the area) with very basic services. We also offer our visitors cultural, nature, community and gastronomic experiences to share with them our culture, traditions and customs. We have the support of students and volunteers to create, develop and shape these experiences.
If you enjoy nature, this is an ideal place to spend a pleasant time with us. Just keep in mind that we are located in the jungle, we are surrounded by trees and lots of vegetation, so there are animals such as: mosquitoes, iguanas, birds, insects and reptiles (spiders, scorpions, tarantulas, snakes, etc.), which are more abundant in the rainy season (from June until the end of the year, approximately).
Get to know our family and its members, we will share with you about our incredible culture, as well as knowledge of traditional medicine!
We kindly ask that volunteers who would like to stay with us understand, speak and communicate fluently in Spanish. Please contact us in Spanish, as this is the best way for us to communicate clearly, avoid any misunderstandings and fully enjoy the adventure with us.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are proud of our culture, we will enjoy sharing with you the cultural experiences scheduled with our visitors. In the case that there are no visitors we will see how we can share these experiences with you and if possible make them happen. Apart from those experiences, you can also learn about our traditions, for example, how to make tortillas. We can also teach you our language, which is Mayan and we will teach you about traditional medicine and how to make tea from fresh leaves so that you will be able to prepare it yourself and add your own personal touch.
When possible and on your own initiative, you can also share with us about your culture, such as a dish from your country (ingredients are available in the community nearby).

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Help us:
o Clean our vegetable gardens where we plant some root vegetables, spices and local fruits, among other things.
o Remove weeds and leaves from our huge garden, paths and trails.
o Taking pictures, videos and making content for our social media.
o If you can paint and/or draw, we have spaces that could be improved with your help.
o When necessary, go to the jungle to collect palms and wood when there is a full moon so that we can improve our house.
o Go to the communities to collect the necessary materials to make compost.
o Communicate with other visitors when necessary and translate some information.
o We have a diversity of local/endemic flora and fauna, so we provide the space if you are a biologist and/or guide to help us in their identification and keep track of them.
o If possible, we would like to carry out a carbon sequestration study to see how we can minimise our impacts, we suggest a minimum stay of 1 month.
We would like to organise workshops with volunteers in schools in the community to raise awareness among children about environmental protection. We would also like to organise meetings for you to teach your language to the children. we suggest a minimum stay of 1 month.
If you can think of something else to support us, depending on your experience and expertise, we are open to your suggestions.

    Accommodation :
The house for volunteers is in a traditional style, built with wood, palm, and some of it is made of metal sheeting. It is shared and has a bathroom and a space for coexistence with other volunteers. We have beds with sheets (in case there are no beds available we have hammocks) and mosquito nets.
We are flexible in the timetable, you decide whether you support in the morning or in the afternoon. Volunteers do about 5 hours a day for 5 days and we offer 2 meals a day (breakfast and lunch). We recommend that you buy your pantry (fresh vegetables, cereals etc.) for your evening meal. The food is based on beans, rice, corn tortillas, eggs and sometimes meat. In our community there are greengrocers, shops, food stalls and a park if you would like to go out and learn more about our community in your free time.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We kindly ask that volunteers who would like to stay with us understands, speaks and can communicate fluently in Spanish, also that they contact us through this language, as it is the best way we can communicate clearly, avoid any misunderstanding and they can fully enjoy this adventure with us.
The nearest ATM is located in the next community named José María Morelos, 30 minutes away from us, or in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar, Chetumal or Mérida, which are bigger places where you can find more ATMs.
To go to the community we have bicycles. If you know about maintenance, we would appreciate your help to repair them and keep them in good condition. There is also local transport at different times or you can hitch a ride to the community. Great experience too!
    Bring biodegradable repellent.
The heat here is very strong so we recommend bringing a hat/cap and a bottle or thermos to refill your water.
We also recommend bringing a book or board games for distraction, as we are in the jungle and our internet is limited. Most of the time it is very quiet.
The work is hard and heavy, as there is a lot of manual labour in the field, so we suggest you bring several options of clothes that can get dirty for each day of the week. We ask you to bring your own personal cleaning and laundry products, as well as a towl for bathing. We will show you how to wash clothes by hand.

    How to get here?
There is local transport, such as the Mayab bus, vans and colectivos which stop in front of our house, you just have to ask the driver. Purchase your Mayab bus ticket at the ADO bus station. If you are coming from Merida or Chetumal, the bus will drop you outside the house, just keep an eye on your google maps to give the driver enough time to stop.
If you are coming from places like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the Mayab bus will drop you off at Polyuc (a town 13km away from the house), so once there you will have to take a taxi to our address.
NOTE: Consider the time change, as in Quintana Roo we have an hour difference with the other states of Mexico. If here in Quintana Roo it is 15:00 hrs, in other Mexican States like Yucatan or Mexico City, it is 14:00 hrs.

    --------------------------------------------
