    Description

Hello, fellow adventurers! Greentings from our warm and welcoming little farm house, located near Santa Cruz on the beautiful island of Madeira. We are Tom, Steff and Eli living together with our dog Murphy, our two Cats and three Chickens!

We live uphill surrounded by nature and are therefore blessed with beautiful ocean views and sunrises. We embrace a lifestyle that emphasizes sustainability, community, and a connection to the environment. We enjoy sharing our space and exchanging personal experiences and views of various topics.

We will be gladly sharing our space with you but we encourage you to feel free during your stay with us. We are eager to explore, learn and contribute to a cultural exchange and a create feeling of home.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Our goal is to create a mutually beneficial environment where travellers feel a sense of belonging and contribute to the vibrancy of our home. The cultural exchange goes beyond the tasks listed, providing an opportunity for personal growth, skill development, and the forging of connections that last a lifetime. We look forward to sharing our home, learning from each other, and creating a positive and enriching experience for everyone involved.

Madeira is rich in nature and we'd be delighted to share our favourite local spots with you. Whether it's hiking trails, cultural events, or discovering hidden spots to snorkel in the area.

In an ideal scenario, we would like to share time in the home and garden with you, while you help out with everyday things, as they need doing; whether it's feeding the animals, helping with cooking and cleaning, doing some weeding in the garden. In between the 'work' we like to play card/board games, lie in the hammock, read a book, make some art or some music! Then in our free time we can go out together for walks and adventures...

We aim to go out for short walks each day with Murphy, then depending on the weather and how busy we are with work/home life, we aim to go out at least once a week for longer trips, to the beach, mountain, forest or to visit friends. You are very welcome to join us for all of these trips, although they are not guaranteed. So, if you're keen to explore the island extensively, see lots of sites, and make big hikes and adventures, it may be better to plan that yourself in advance.

    Help

We are seeking open-minded and curious individuals to join us in various tasks around our home. We encourage a collaborative environment where everyone's unique skills and ideas are appreciated.

Tasks could include tending to our garden—whether it's weeding, pruning trees, maintaining the landscape, or simply helping keep things organized. Moreover, we appreciate tasks in the house such as dusting, cooking (you could use our selfgrown veggies), laundry, dishes etc. Furthermore, we could use some help with our animals for example feeding the chickens, go on walks with Muphy or brushing the cats. Eli, an energetic and curious 11-year-old, is looking forward to spending time together. Engaging in shared activities, DIY-projects, and quality time will not only be appreciated but also contribute to her learning and growth. If you have any special interests or skills you'd like to share, we are all open to hearing about them.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We are pleased to offer a cozy and private accommodation for our Workawayers. Next to our main house, there is a small cottage with bathroom where you'll have your own space.

Currently, Tom's office is situated in the entryway of the cottage. However, he uses it on weekdays, mostly in the morning from around 9am, and is more than willing to coordinate with you regarding its use. We prioritize open communication, and your comfort is important to us.

In addition, to your private sleeping space, you are welcome to share common spaces in our main house, and garden which is more in a quieter remote location. In that way, we foster a sense of community and providing opportunities for social interactions in the shared areas. We believe that a comfortable and welcoming living space is key to a positive Workaway experience, and we're committed to ensuring you feel at home during your stay with us.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

If there are two of you planning to come, we have enough space for both of you if you are fine with sharing the small cottage and a cozy big bed.

It's worth mentioning that the house is a little remote, we are not in Santa Cruz town itself, and although there are at least three buses that pass nearby to the house each day, getting to and from the main city of Funchal can take some time, so if you wanted to be in the city alot it's not ideal.

Public transport on the island is a little slow and infrequent. Hiring a car is quite expensive, and most of the guided tours leave in the mornings from the city/Funchal. With this in mind, you may need full free days to go out on tours/hikes etc. One way we can make this happen, is to condense work time... for example doing 3 full days (8hrs per day) in return for 4 days free time. This can be a little more tricky to manage, but if we discuss it in advance, it's absolutely doable.

Weather and time depending, we can also offer to help drive you to places you want to go, in return for a small fuel contribution. It’s difficult to guarantee this but considering we are often going out, it can be possible to combine our trips with dropping you off at sites or hiking trails for example.

If you have any questions about this, or anything else, we'd be happy to discuss with you on the phone or with a video call in advance.
