* At the moment I would host someone who already speaks Italian.

I'm Paola, italian who lives in one of the most ancient cities in the world called Matera, in Basilicata. I believe that travelling and meeting new people is one of the most interesting and amazing experiences in life. I have already travelled in Europe and love meeting new people and practicing new languages. Since I have studied German, I would gladly host an austrian or german Girl, who is also speaking Italian. In addition to this I would also host people from other european countries preferibly from Hungary,Greece, France, Switzerland, Sacandinavia and Spain. Nevertheless do not hesitate to contact me if you come from another european country. Also Italians are very welcomed. It is going to be an unforgettable cultural exchange in which we help each other to improve our language skills and knowledge. I can show you Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019. Also we can travel as travel buddies/friends to other cities and have a good time there. I would still be your host and provide accommodation and food. There is an important thing you need to know before contacting me: I have a disability that impacts my eyesight, which is why I can't see very well. I'm looking for a responsible girl that can accompany me during daily life activities, small excursions and travels. At home I am completely autonomous but outside I depend on other people since I can't move properly on my own. In the past, I made some bad experiences with some volunteers. If you don't think you can handle this responsibility, please don't contact me since I am looking for people that take this job seriously. When I confirm the stay of someone at my house, I expect the volunteer to keep their promise without leaving prematurely. Also beforehand, calculate your time well and tell me in which period you're available. In addition it would be nice for the volunteers to reply when I contact them, even if it's just a polite "no, thank you"! Also I want to point out that I will only accept girls without pets. Travellers will make a new interesting experience meeting a new culture and visiting Matera, fascinating city with a magic landscape. One of the most important aspects I want to point out is the value of making a new friendship, thanks to this experience.
Arbeit
This is not your normal workaway experience with 25h work per week. I am looking for a friend with whom I can have interesting conversations, go for a walk, go on holidays , do cultural activities like going to concerts and just have a good time. You do not need to work here I just want you to be my eyes and become part of my daily life.

Aside from that I am looking for a workawayer to travel in general. I will still provide accommodation and food. For example I have already been one week in Cremona, the city where I have studied musicology, with one of my lovely workawayers. It was a very pleasant journey.

Unterkunft
The hosted girl will have their own room with Internet connection and plant of heating. It's a comfortable room, with a window and a writing desk. It is a house with garden, well-connected with the city center. Food will be provided for every meal. However, I would prefer volunteers that aren't vegetarian, but eat everything. For vegans, it won't be possible to stay with me.

In their free-time my guests could visit the Sassi and the city center (by bus or on foot). There are Cafés, churches, belvedere, shops, meeting places in all city. Moreover obviously everyone can choose how to spent her's time off. Regarding my location, we could take the bus to reach the city centre or, if the host girl has a driving license, we can use my mother's car together.

Writing a feedback remembering the best moments of a Workaway experience is always emotionally difficult. I wished that the beautiful time spent with Sophia would never end. Sophia… read more is one of the most reliable, serious, educated, sweet, responsible and honest people I've ever met, her sweetness touches the heart deaply. Together we spent almost a month in Matera. I tried to show her as much of my city, as possible welcoming her into my family was a pleasure. With her I always felt at ease, calm and safe in the street, Sophia was my eyes. I will happily remember the excellent ice creams enjoyed on these long and hot summer afternoons, the walks, the deep conversations we had together. I was impressed by the dedication and love shown for Italy, its art and music. It was a great pleasure to share my huge love for the Opera with her, together we were able to participate in an opera recital, listen and see the most beautiful creations of our most famous composers: Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. We spent three weeks in perfect harmony. A person sensitive to Beauty and with an artistic soul, it is not uncommon to read her reflections on what she saw and experienced. For this splendid and very sweet girl, I have only words full of esteem and gratitude for what she transmitted and gave me. I tried as much as possible to help her with learning Italian, a language that Sophia has been studying with unshakeable enthusiasm for only six months. For this I certainly commend her commitment and great ability to speak the language on a daily basis. I am sure that over time she will be able to improve more and more in the development of her skills.
Sophia is an excellent workawayer, the best you could ever wish for: educated, good, kind, very sensitive and discreet. I thank her for having patiently lived through some complicated situations, which required a spirit of adaptability. I am also grateful that. she gave me freedom. In her company we organized our days in the best possible way and I was able to walk freely, which I cannot always do here in Matera due to lack of assistance. Thanks to Workaway I was able to meet beautiful people like her, a friend to whom I wish the best for the future and with whom I know I will be able to collect many other beautiful moments. This experience is over, but we will see each other again, I'm sure.

I spent one month with Paola and in general, I had a great time!
I had my own, big room in her and her mother’s house where they made me feel welcome in every way right from the start. Her mom is kind, cooks very well and it was very nice from her to provide me meat-free meals. They both made clear though that for the future, vegetarians will not… read more be able to stay with them for more than three weeks. The house in general is great, sometimes we watched Italian shows or the news in the living room together and I could use the garden to read or have breakfast outside whenever I wanted to.
Guiding her in the streets isn’t difficult, you just have to pay attention and communicate well with her. It was my first experience with a blind person and I learned a lot about how she thinks and about the way she manages her daily life.
Especially in the beginning of my stay we went for a lot of walks to the city center and the surrounding areas together, met some of her friends during dinners or a party and visited the attractions of Matera. The city has a special atmosphere and a very interesting history, it’s definitely worth a visit! Paola will also explain and show you different parts of the place, even though she isn’t the biggest fan of her hometown. I was fully involved in her daily life, for example I got to meet her family on her father’s birthday party. Once, we made an organized tour through the Murgia together and another evening, she took me to Bari to see an opera at the theater Petruzzelli which was a very nice experience! In the evening, we had dinner together and often continued talking about everything until late at night, even though we didn’t have much in common. Especially about politics we had very different opinions and I couldn’t always fully get her more right-winged views and sadly she didn’t always manage to stay calm. Nonetheless, it was also an interesting and new experience for me having discussions with someone of a totally different mindset.
While I was there, she had to start writing her paper for university, so sometimes she was busy studying which gave me a lot of free time to go running in the morning or visit the museums, churches and other local sights in the city center by myself. One day, I also went to Bari, the nearest bigger city, by train.
Since she didn’t have her internship at Bari anymore, we mostly stayed at Matera. In general I wouldn’t call this work, but Paola is looking for a friend that keeps her company. It felt like vacation at a friend’s house, so if you’re looking for a more relaxed workaway, this is it.
I would’ve liked to see a little more of the region or in general go out with friends more often, but obviously Paola depends on others to visit other places by car.
To talk about her character, I can tell you that Paola is a very kind, sweet and welcoming person! She is very passionate about the German language and culture, but we mostly talked in Italian. She was very patient with me in case I didn’t know how to express myself and helped me to improve my skills a lot, thank you for that! Whenever she talks about opera, she basically glows, so it would be great if someone who came here shared that interest :) With her Italian temper, it never gets boring.

Sadly I was wrong. From the first moment she came, we realised that she was not a polite person. She used my shampoo without asking, she used the wash machine, without being invited, she never helped in cleaning the table during our vacation and didn’t really care about me and what I was looking for. I was looking for a friend to spend mostly of my time with and she probably thought to come here only to be on holiday, to eat and sleep, or going to the meeting point here in the forest at the sea, without involving me. She came to Italy only to share cultural differences or to do projects with art, painting, music, or, anyway, to show her abilities. Thet’s incredibly selfish and for this reason our relationship was difficult from the very beginning. She proposed me sometimes to do some activities together, but I didn’t like to have her around, therefore I started limiting her presence. I understood unfortunately that she was in Italy only for a personal utility and interests and not to help a person. She studied for 3 years in Milan to do an international course about comunication and fashion. She Spocke so only English, a good excuse for not learning the Italian language, because it’s too difficult. In my opinion, all the people who wish to come to Italy should learn the language better, mainly if you stay here for 3 long years; otherwise, I could think that foreign people have no respect for our culture and traditions. She asked me to write her a mail with all the rules she should respect that are valid wherever you go, in Italy or in general, in the west of the world. After reading it, she said to me that we belong to the high class, where the rules are more restricted, because we live in a beautiful, big and elegant house, ignoring maybe the life stile of poor people in other countries she visited. #text redacted #
She travels without a phone, that she lost and decided to don’t buy it at the moment, giving problems to my family. We decided to close this experience together, but she had trouble to find a bus from Matera to Milan, she had only an old phone that my mother lent her. Without having the possibility to use an app that would have aloud her to pay the ticket through her credit card, my father wanted to pay it for her and she would have given me the money. She complained of the bus price: too expensive for her. She affirmed she would have payed just the half of it. She didn’t fint find personally a bus online, my family helped her to do it and she didn’t want not even to pay a ticket to retourne to Milan: in other words, she forced my family to offer her a payed holiday. After saying that in fact, my father decided to offer her the travel, a very big cortesy he did her, which I don’t agree, principally because she didn’t reserve this from us. We hosted her with too much cortesy and generosity; she gave us only problems and, regarding me, I conferme that I lived a very bad experience. She didn’t thanks my father for his generosity and I can’t understand it. I feel responsible to have done this choice and I’m very sorry for all she did also to my family.

From the moment she responded me telling about her interest in knowing me better, I have immediately understood that we would get on well. This experience with her has been magnificent. Verena is a friend for a lifetime. I felt comfortable with her from the very first day. Every evening we talked a lot, laughing and sharing our love for music even if our taste of music differed sometimes.:)

Her positivity and her smile are contagious. Every day, I woke up happily because I knew that I would live with her more and more new experiences. I would like to thank her again for lighting up my days with her smile (which she has even in her voice)

Being excellent in everything that has to do with computers, I would like to thank her again for helping me update my Ipad to IOS 12 or for resolving some small problems with my Iphone. Not to mention her precious help with downloading a few podcasts of a programme (that I constantly follow on Radio 3 ) entitled La Barcaccia which even gave us emotional moments, when an afternoon we have listened together the Dichterliebe!

Even though Verena has not worked with visually impaired or partially sighted people so far, I would like to precise that she has been absolutely perfect in guiding me through the streets of Matera, my city which is not accessible for those living with a disability. She has been impeccable when she accompanied me to Cremona (where my music faculty is) because I had to take two exams.

Besides,I would like to thank again this magnificent site for giving me the possibility to get to know girls like her whom without I could never have been able to go to Cremona. We went through three intense but beautiful days during which I felt protected and in safety as in this whole experience. Verena took care that everything go well, with her perfect sense of organisation. Only after did she confine me to have warned rather strongly the responsibility of my person and for this I thank her.

Her sincerity allowed me to appreciate her even more and to wish her even more the bests.

Saying goodbye has been very sad for me because I consider this splendid girl a sister. Dear Verena, I am sure that we will see each other soon. Maybe on your mythical land!
You know that here you will always be welcome.

If you have the occasion to host Verena don't let it go: I absolutely recommend her, for her education, discretion, reliability, correctness, positivity and tenderness. If I could, would give her more than five stars!

She was so happy to spend her day at the sea, taking the sun or swimming, in a very peaceful place near Taranto, a city that we have also visited. I've tried to show Hanna as much as possible, because, since she arrived, I considered her as a friend, or a sister to stay with.
Sitting near the sea or at the bar, we had interesting conversations regarding important topics: politic or different ways to see the life. Although our opinions were sometimes different, was a pleasure for me to listen to her, having the opportunity to talk each other in German and, sometimes, in Italian. What I would to point out is that Hanna has a strong personality: an added value, if I consider that she is only 22 and can already talk about very current topics, such Es European Union or immigration, with competence and skill! We had a great time together, sharing our passion for foreign countries Oder animals like horses, in a very interesting cultural and musical exchange. :slight_smile: we listened each other our favourite music and I can remember that, after listening Die lustige Witwe, an Operetta by Franz Lehar, she told me that, although she likes pop music, this one was beautiful!
Since the first time I've meet Hanna, , was incredibly easy for me to understand her German, which could be difficult sometimes. For this reason, I would to thank this extraordinary girl, for the trust I had in my personal abilities and skills in German conversations.
I can only highly racomand this brilliant and smart girl to other potential hosts.

Don`t be afraid of body contact as Paola loves to hug :D but that is so cute and you feel so connected and closer to people if they show you this warm attitude towards you -in general the South Italians are very lovely with all their kisses and cute names and their open and lively manner.

Paolas German is very good but she is still afraid to make mistakes so in my opinion the most important thing is to show her through relaxed talking that she doesn`t have to feel fear. She is a very ambitious woman and very intelligent. I was always impressed of her knowledge of music, politics, the German language and so on. When we were having one of our walks, we often talked German together and in the evenings I sometimes read aloud an article of "Deutsche Welle" to just give her the possibility to listen to German. I was always reading one sentence and then trying to repeat this sentence in an easier German -if it was written in a too complicated way- or explained her new words. We also learned vocabulary together which helped us both because she learned new German words and I learned new Italian words.

Except of all the talks while sitting with a coffee or a tea and all the time of laughter we shared, we were doing long walks in the living areas nearby or to the old center of the city (the Sassi) which took us perhaps 35 minutes to get there. She was always so happy to go outside and move. She showed me most of the time so much trust and always tried to make my time as best as possible. We had so much wonderful moments together: all the walks, the ice cream in the city, trips to Bari (two times) and into the Murca, we were in the cinema and in a concert, made trips with her incredible wonderful and so lovely godfather Franco, ate each day a big plate of Pasta, delicious "dolci" and so on.
If you are open-minded, you will enjoy a lot your stay Paolas place!!
Of course, sometimes it can be hard to live so close together, especially if your opinions and views of certain topics are different, but you can be honest with Paola and you will also have time for yourself.

This place will especially fit to you if you are also interested in Operas and classic music. :)

I really consider this hosting place as a very intensive and close experience and a lovely place to spend time in the warm-hearted South of Italy!
