Vom Workawayer (Kris) für Host

By hosting me Mayke has put Beverlo and Leopoldsburg on my mental map of Belgium.
She's one of those hosts understanding what cultural exchange is. Seen from my point of view it has more to do with meeting neighbors and other locals in their natural environment, than with visiting famous castles :-).
She was realistic in estimating time
… read more and energy needed to fulfil the agreed task and this in the short period of time I could stay.
Because her place is close to the place I call home, I will go back to take my 'days off' at a moment it makes sense for both of us. And, I guess, we will make plans than, for a next work-away-from-home.
But in fact it doesn't feel as if I have to get something in return, to be in balance. That's because of the way I felt welcome. for instance shown in the way we eat together the food Mayke prepared with love.
Friday 29th of October till Saturday 6th of November:
Since last summer, a second room was waiting to be painted in Beverlo, more specific at Mayke's home. So, now it feels the task is really finished. Nice this 'inland' Workaway (caused by Covid).
While Mayke worked the weekend around, I was painting and walking dog and cats. The end of the weekend was marked with a pleasant dinner at a local restaurant. After five days: no walls anymore to be painted an since Mayke took some days off their was time for more small forest-walks; visiting family; inviting family for high-tea and for a campfire-party with friends at the outskirts of a nearby city.

Having Kris at home was a wonderful experience. Kris painted my bedroom and even made beautiful symbols on the wall. The place has become not only beautiful but also filled with good vibes, because that is who she is.
Besides the work, Kris is pleasant to share our home with. talking, sharing food, going for walks...

This first workaway experience was amazing. We all felt blessed to have Sean in our family. He blends in into our family so well and yet he keeps his space, a very pleasant contact.
Sean does an amazing job. He is good at his skills and that was just what we needed, because i have to learn a lot when it comes to computer and internet.

… read more went very easy: Some days we worked all day, some days less. I must say that Sean works more than what we agreed: he gives a little extra as he loves what he is doing.
I would surely recommend Sean!

My First ‘Workaway’ …
Wow!
What an amazing experience, right from the first moment I pulled up outside the house and the whole family was there to meet me. The host family are amazing people, very friendly. Mayke is the one who speaks most English (which is a God send as I don’t speak any Dutch, well a little now.) But, still Mutlu,
… read more Mayke’s partner and I have managed to speak and understand each other through a hybrid of Dutch/English with a little German thrown in for good measure, hey it works.
The family are so attentive and try to anticipate your every need, I haven’t wanted for anything and the work has been laid back and sedate. Worked out on an almost daily basis depending on what we all were feeling like. Given the weather it was a good thing they hosted me for the website building skills not my gardening.
It was really interesting talking to Mayke about her new business venture related to hormonal health. Just the simple fact of having a Facebook page set-up made her beam from ear to ear and re-invigorate the motivation of her work.
An extremely happy first Workaway experience for me that put my mind and any worries I had to rest, I only hope it was the same for the family. I would have no hesitation in recommending these lovely hosts, perfect!
