Background: After the earthquake on August 5th 2018 devistated the village of Mangku Bumi Kahuripan, many of his neighbors and friends’ home were damaged or even destroyed completely. For weeks families had to live inside tents made of tarps and sticks. Unfortunately, the promised government assistance never came. Mangku thought first of his community and how he can give back to mend their trauma. So he asked the children, how can I help you relieve the trauma? Their responses were almost unanimous, “We want to be like you, to be able to speak English and learn about other cultures of travelers”. Mangku has many years of experience around the world as a tour guide. He understands the importance of knowing English for the people of his Island. Thus, the idea of creating a free after school English class for all children to participate in was formed.
This is a safe place where the children can learn English and about other cultures in a fun, interactive way, to shed a positive light on all of the negatives surrounding the community as an effect of the earthquake.
In addition, Mangku organizes events such as “Friday Cleanup” where he leads a community trash cleanup around the village.
Mangku is welcoming volunteers around the world to help him teach the lessons from time to time and kindly opens up his home for them to stay and eat. His selflessness shines though endlessly as seen on the enthusiastic smiles of the children when they eagerly come to class, notebook in hand (donated by Mangku), ready for his lessons.

Volunteers can closely interact with locals and get to know their cultures. While teaching basic English skills they will also be able to learn the local language a little bit. Furthermore they get experience in teaching and interacting children.
Volunteers are also helping me to practice my skills in a foreign language.
Over 200 students currently attend 9 English classes put on by long-term and short-term volunteers. You can help teach lessons for basic English skills with additional emphasis on environmental awareness education. Our mission is to provide a free, safe place for children to have fun and enjoy learning English in a stress-free environment. We are working to heal trauma with knowledge and interaction.
In addition there is a Clean up every friday afternoon. Help us clean the streets of Kuripan! It is our goal to teach our children to keep our village clean and bring awareness to the community to use the rubbish bins when we have trash to throw away. Give us a hand by helping to clean and set a good example to show we care about our village!
