    Description

--- Please read the Accommodation section too! It's Important! ---

We are avid travelers ourselves. We have cycled from Norway to Spain, we have done a few trips. We hiked to erupting volcanoes, we crashed weddings in various countries. We even traveled with the Workaway format. We LOVED it.

Now, we want to do the same, but on the hosting side of the equation. This place is truly paradisiac and we decided to call it home for a while.

We are a married couple, Ed is Mexican and Livi is Lithuanian. Been together since 2004. Funny, sarcastic, somewhat sporty, witty (we think). We have used our skills to travel and see the world and we are currently starting a few ventures in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. We have a photography project, we have a property management project... And other things that come up that are compatible with our skill set, such as translations, electrical work, photography, etc.

We are looking for people like us: Able to sit down and focus on tasks at hand efficiently and productively but also able and willing to explore and experience the locations in which one finds one self. We have traveled far and well, and we have done it without being rich, using our skills to benefit us and others. So far, so good :)

It is VERY important that you read the accommodation section BEFORE you submit a request and make sure it is of your interest.

Tulum is known for its beach and "vibe".

Yoga, meditation ... holistic everything. Its everywhere. We do not participate directly in any of it, but you should be able to find options based on your interests.

    Spanish is also everywhere :)

There are a couple of Spanish schools in town, and we have a lot of Spanish learning materials that we have shared with people. We use Spanish in the office every day and practice with volunteers who take lessons.

We need office people. At least for 5 hours a day, we need people behind computers. Ideally with their own laptops: Blog post creation. SEO, Graphic Design, marketing, social media savvy are very good skills to have.

Any person with a college degree, a good command of English (Native, or with advanced schooling on the language) and proficiency with MS office and internet. We can use most people as long as you speak and write English to a Native level and can research and do tasks online for a total of 5 hours per day. This means: In an office environment, sitting, working. All are welcome!

    --- --- --- edit --- --- ---
As of RIGHT NOW, we would love to get:

VIDEO people. Proficient users of Premiere. People that can record and edit videos from a blog article: Create a script, shoot video, edit, and deliver well recorded short videos. Content will be provided.

We also would like CONTENT creators. Blog entries, website info entries, descriptions. English majors or marketing majors. Bloggers, etc. This is a production driven gig. We need people who can research, write and deliver well-written articles on various topics. Articles. Not article ;)

    --- --- --- back to general description --- --- ---

We want people to assist us with creating, promoting, marketing the various projects we are working on. Creating marketing campaigns, content for blogs, working on social media.

We work hard. Harder and longer than 5 hours per day :) We are easy going but work is work and we have accomplished what have was because we focus and get things done. We still have fun doing so, but make no mistake, we work.

We are flexible on times ... you can get up early and go for a swim or hit the gym. We like to do that ourselves, so we start the day around 10am or 12pm. Sometimes we will have specific times we will need help, we will let you know. Many volunteers have joined Spanish lessons or Yoga classes in the morning and cycle to the beach very early, then come to work after they are done with their morning "rituals". Days off are floating, and are easy to program according to your plans.

Open to couples, single people, or two friends traveling together. Just be aware that you will SHARE the space.

    The SPACE

The condo is in Tulum, roughly four blocks from the main road, in the outer part of town. It is -NOT- luxurious in ANY way. It is very basic, and it is not up to first world comfort levels like high speed internet, or A/C.

    Really, truly basic.

If you are coming to Tulum expecting a prime location, it will depend a lot on your thresholds. It is well above the average Tulum resident, but that is not by any means near developed country urban settings.

We have a room with a twin bunk bed AND a single bed that is used by volunteers. Depending on whether or not we have another workawayer, you may have the room to yourself or share. This means there will be as many as three volunteers in the room. We will try to tell you BEFORE you arrive. We will try to, if we have female volunteers, to keep it all female, or all male, and depending on preferences, we will do our best to keep everyone comfortable.

We will do our best to tell you everything BEFORE you arrive.

The room is inside a TWO BEDROOM, ONE BATH condo, that is shared with other volunteers.

It is up to volunteers to do the dishes, clean the counters, sweep the floors, etc. This is HUGE because it can go from normal to 'yuck' in 10 minutes if you just assume 'it gets cleaned often'. Very important to do as much as possible, and keep the day to day at a good level.

The building is a residential building and other full time residents live there, so we need to keep noise down as good neighbors would. We have ONE bicycle that can be used to move around town. Tulum is very small so cycling is a very popular way to go from one place to another.

The building does NOT HAVE public washers, for clothes. Meaning you will have to wash it elsewhere. The ones that are there, belong to other residents and are VERY vocal if anyone touches them! Like, they do -NOT- like it.

    Please:
    - NO DRUGS -
    - NO hard core partying -

The condo where you are staying is rented and we are responsible for it and everything in it. We are also liable to be asked to leave if a volunteer does something inappropriate. Obviously, we want to avoid that. Please have that in mind when applying. You need to be able to behave in a respectful manner your surroundings, and those who may share the room/apartment with you.

It should be clear and evident... but we just want to make sure we mention it. :)

THERE IS NO INTERNET AT THE VOLUNTEER CONDO. if this is a problem, and you are relying on Youtube or Netflix or Facebook to keep you entertained, this will NOT BE a possibility.

    There is no TV.

There is no A/C in the units.

Volunteers are welcome to come and use the internet at the office, where all the work takes place, for ONE HOUR before their work and ONE HOUR after. This has to do with the fact that the bandwidth is needed for a number of our projects and it prevents our ability to work if we have several people online, watching videos or downloading movies.

We have a library of movies you are welcome to copy, and hours upon hours of language training that you can take with you, but during daytime hours, we NEED the bandwidth.

This has to do with balance. We know you need access, but we have limited broadband for now, so you can use it ... but we need it too :)

IF you will be WORKING on a personal project or paying job while on your volunteering period and internet access is crucial for your work this will NOT be suitable for you. This is VERY important. Please make sure that if you need more than we can provide, we understand ... but we can only offer what we have to offer.

    Food and supplies.

We will provide food, and basic supplies for the condo where volunteers live. But it is very important that you realize we are often busy and have to drive to nearby cities and be occupied for the whole day.

    - This section has now changed - We will give you a food allowance, and will cover the costs of things that are needed for the apartment (cleaning supplies, etc.)

You MUST be able to, for example, if you run out of sugar ... or milk, or bananas, we will ask you to get them at the store and we will reimburse you. By now, it has turned to having you pick your own groceries with a weekly budget. This leaves you some room to pick what you like, not what we like. We realize we are responsible... but we need to be able to ask you to help us with certain things on certain occasions.

The level of enjoyment depends on expectations: some volunteers have different expectations than others. Some people realize that this is a small town in the Caribbean and is famous for the beach, not the internet bandwidth and expect less. Some people try to maintain the same level of comfort and connectivity as they would have in a developed, first world modern city. It truly depends on expectations.

We hope this description sets the right expectations so you will know what we can provide.

Hope all this makes sense. :)

  • What else ...

    What else ...

There are about 8 Cenotes less than 10 minutes in either direction. LOTS of activites:

There are diving schools in Akumal and Tulum that offer diving certifications in the mornings. There is a kite boarding school in every direction. You throw a stone, you hit either a diving instructor or a kite boarding instructor in the head. The Yoga instructors will casually and graciously duck away. Karma! ;) They also have the cave diving certifications. Lots of things to explore on your free time.

The area is world famous for a reason. Lots of people come through or come directly to visit this area. Incredibly beautiful. Playa is about 45 minutes away. Public transport is cheap, efficient and air conditioned! Very regular too! You walk out, you flag down, you get in, 45 minutes and 40 pesos later, you are in Playa del Carmen.

Closest airport is Cancun. From there, the A.D.O. Bus will take you to Playa for 160 pesos. From Playa, you can take a colectivo (public van) and they will drop you off very close to our place. Cross the highway (carefully) and three minutes in, you are at our place.

We will offer accommodation and basic foods. We will take you and/or point where the supermarkets are (Accessible via bikes) for you to buy specialty item foods as needed. You will get space in the fridge and a dry cupboard to store things. We will probably offer more, but we rather not promise now, and then get busy or not be available and then not fulfill the promise. You will need to fix your meals AND clean after yourself. We will have a professional cleaner come help, but only once a week so the day to day is up to you.

I am thinking some grilling on the weekends? A beer? We'll see :D After a long week of work, we will likely throw in some sausages on the grill, and cold beer! (but again... no promises and this would be a bonus. Both for you and us!) :)
