We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Nicki on her beautiful farm near Timaru. It was rewarding to leave a meaningful contribution, from installing new roof rafters in the barn to sorting out issues with the watering system. The accommodation was fantastic—we had our own cozy space to relax, which was a welcome break from living in our van.

Sharing meals and stories with Nicki, her son Josh (a kind and capable man), and her delightful grandsons was a highlight. Nicki and her late husband Brent’s adventurous spirit was inspiring. Their creative and economical approach to traveling the world encouraged us to embrace some of our own bold travel dreams.
It always amazes me that people with limited time here would choose to spend a chunk of it in my little corner of NZ. I am so grateful that Warren and Lisa made that choice. They were such a blessing to me in the 6 days they stayed. Warren did a huge job of repairs to a farm shed, replacing rotting beams and strengthening weakened ones. Nothing

He also helped sort some plumbing issues with my garden. While he did this Lisa quietly tackled weedy areas in my garden and transformed them. My heart was lifted just seeing the work she did. They are both self starters, seeing what needs to be done and getting stuck in. They are also just really friendly, likeable people, full of interesting stories and fun to be around. Their visit coincided with me being away part of the time but I had no worries leaving them in my home. They would be excellent trustworthy and diligent house-sitters. Thank you so much for all your help Warren and Lisa, much aroha to you both.

The green paddocks are our little farm viewed from the top of the hill. House to the far left behind the trees.
That's our home viewed from a local walkway which runs along the edge of the town.
A short cycle ride to the closest beach. This one's not for swimming but a little further on is a safe sandy beach (Caroline Bay) with cafes nearby. Be warned: our sea water is always cold!
The view from our front deck looking towards town. This is a great place for our morning coffee.

Max is a remarkable and personable young man with a friendly, positive attitude. During his 10 days with us he was a great help with clearing ivy, carting, splitting, stacking firewood, moving hay bales, stapling up ceiling insulation, tidying up old timber and metal and helping my son repair sheets of iron on a shed and helping with tree
… read more trimming. He works best when there is clear communication on the job task, expectations, safety requirements etc but also has initiative for seeing things that might improve the task.
He has real ability to problem solve how to fix things: he dismantled and repaired our broken brush cutter and then used it to clear long grass.
Where he does shine though is the way he can relate to, positively influence and mentor children. He spent time with my grandsons (9 and 11) playing cards, soccer and basketball and he has a special way of bringing the best out in them. I'd call it his super power!
Max loves to go to the gym and he eats a high protein/carb diet to support that. He bought extra food supplies and was self managing around those requirements. I'd recommend chatting about this to be clear on how this will best work in any particular household. He can bake yummy cookies!
We will miss your lovely smile and positive vibe Max and look forward to following your onward journey. Thank you for all your help and for being part of Team Cowan!

Nicki and Brent welcomed me into their home and made me very comfortable. Nicki produced some delicious meals, mostly created from homegrown produce. Vom Host für Workawayer (Joy & Jasmine )
Joy was a great help weeding gardens and pathways and also was very helpful with meals and cleaning up. She really was a 'joy' to have in the house: she works hard, has a positive can-do attitude and is a lot of fun and we absolutely recommend her to any host. We will miss you Joy and hope we may meet again one day.

Nicki and Brent were perfect hosts !
The flood at the beginning was definitely an unusual start but we were glad that we could help Nicki to get along with it. Despite of that both of them made sure that we felt welcome from the very first day on. They involved us in their family life so we got to know all of them pretty fast (They are very lovely

The food Nicki provided was so delicious !!! Not only the tea tasted perfect but also the snacks and lunch were more than enough to keep us full and happy :) The room we were staying in was comfortable and we also had our own bathroom. Indeed it was a bit hot sometimes but just because of the heaters. Nevertheless we had a lovely place outside in the shade with Bully right next to us (in a paddock of course). The work we did had mostly to with preparing firewood but we liked to use the log splitter. Furthermore we also helped with a lot of smaller jobs like gardening, preparing meals or snacks and picking beans. In the afternoon we had enough freetime to explore Timaru or just relax in the shade !
All in all it was a great time and we were happy to share our last workaway-stay in New Zealand with you.
All the best for you and your family.
Hopefully we will stay in contact.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

Vom Host für Workawayer (Matthias & Ellen)
These two are absolute GOLD. On the afternoon they arrived we had a terrible flood in our house from an upstairs water tank. Ellen and Matthias didn't hesitate to immediately help with mopping up the water and I don't know what I would have done without them! Since then they have had to tolerate living in our house with the hot noisy drying

They have worked so hard helping us prepare logs (using a log splitter), bring in and stack our firewood (a massive job), cutting out thistles and gorse, fixing a fence, garden tidy usp, moving branches and stacking them for a bonfire, picking beans and helping with preserving zucchini pickle as well as baking some delicious cakes. They have been absolute treasures and I recommend them to anyone who is looking for paid or volunteer helpers as they are both very hard workers. Thank you Matthias and Ellen for all your wonderful help - I will miss seeing you down by the tree and I think Bully will as well! We wish you a fantastic last few weeks in New Zealand and safe travels on your journey home. from Nicki and Brent

We are very grateful to David for all his help with repairs to a large shed and assisting Brent to build a much needed woodshed. David also did an awesome job helping us to get the firewood in and splitting the wood ready for use. He is very easy to have in the home and we are delighted that he has found work with a local organ builder and will be

Vom Host für Workawayer (Alizée & Meldreg)
Alizee and Meldreg stayed with us for almost 3 weeks and were such a great help during their stay. They are both hard workers who see a job through to the end. The big projects they helped with were to complete an outside paving area and to clear up and help repair (including the roof) a partially demolished shed (a big job). Alizee was my

Vom Host für Workawayer (Feliciano)
We loved hosting Feliciano and miss him already! He was willing to help with any task and helped Brent with digging a drain, demolishing a shed, laying some pavers and lots of other manual work around our small farm.
