    Description

Come and volunteer at our Community Secondary School and Nursery School, which are part of a locally run community development organisation.
The School has been built as a not-for-profit, charitable foundation, serving villages which previously had no Secondary School within at least 2 hours' walking distance.
We opened the Secondary School for the first time in January 2015, with just two classes, and now have 8 full-time teachers and over 200 students. Facilities are among the best in the region, with a library, science lab and excellent supplies of textbooks and teaching resources. We have recently been given a set of mini-laptops, so we are now able to teach some IT lessons.
We opened a boarding hostel for girls in January 2021.
The Nursery School was opened in 2022, with 2 class rooms and 2 teachers.
Nkhata Bay is set in a stunningly beautiful area on the northern lakeshore of Lake Malawi. The town is well-supplied with Lodges and tourist infrastructure, including beaches and watersports, and is about one hour on foot, or 10 minutes by motor bike taxi, from the School.

We are looking for help at the school, of course, but would be really pleased to find someone who can help with developing our website and helping with our social media/fundraising profile.

In September 2023, we are looking for someone with teaching experience and qualifications to join the teaching team at the Secondary School. What we would really like is for someone to be able to take a lead on developing teaching and learning at the School. This would need to be someone who could commit to stay for longer than just a few weeks. If you are interested, there could be a Malawian salary available for this work.

We are looking for volunteers to support the work of our team of qualified and experienced Malawian teachers. This could include working with individual students or small groups, either in class or after School, developing sport and fitness for the students, running clubs and afternoon activities, leading English conversation groups, creating a garden and pond for the School, and many other possibilities - depending on the skills which you will bring!
We don't expect volunteers to teach classes - that's the job of the teachers - so you won't need a teaching qualification or any knowledge of the Malawian curriculum.
All teaching in Malawian Secondary Schools is done in English and all exams are set and answered in English, so improving the spoken and written English of the students is the number one priority.

We also need volunteers who are able to help us with our ongoing fund-raising efforts. We have big plans for developing the School further, and need to find sources of money for these.

At present, the school (and the community development project as a whole) have only a basic website, so that is another thing that would be useful, if anyone has web design skills.

    Accommodation

Comfortable, clean accommodation in a small, friendly village. Substantial, brick and iron-sheet-roofed house, with generator electricity, mosquito nets and water from village pumps. Bucket shower and local-style long-drop toilet.
Mobile phone coverage in the village is generally good, but there is rarely a signal at the School itself. You can buy data packages fairly cheaply to get Internet access in the village via your mobile, and in Nkhata Bay town there are Internet cafes.
