Our Community Center is a non-profit, non-governmental organization funded by its Spanish language school. All of our proceeds return directly to the community through our educational programs for children, youth and adults. Our programs involve teaching English, art, Spanish reinforcement, mathematics, science and sport for children - we are an after school program. The children we serve often come from families who have been marginalized by poverty, indigenous Mayan heritage, or rural backgrounds, and many lack access to the privilege of a primary school education even though six years are theoretically provided free of charge under the Guatemalan system.
Our foreign volunteers provide creative, thoughtful instruction and activities which these children would otherwise not receive. To that end we seek dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who are motivated to give back to some of the most disenfranchised communities in Quetzaltenango. If you are interested in learning about grassroots social development work through education, want to gain valuable international teaching experience, and improve your Spanish through working with kids, our Community Center has a place for you!
There are many different activities for volunteers during the week, such as cooking lessons, salsa lessons, day trips to exciting sites around Xela such as hot springs, volcanos, lake Atitlan, etc.
For 2017, we have two longer term volunteer positions available: International Coordinator and Project Manager.
Unfortunatly, as a non-profit organization we cannot offer food or accomodation, however, we do offer high quality and affordable homestay opportunites, and can assist you in finding alternative low-cost accommodation.

We have two openings for volunteer positions helping with coordination and projects. These positions offer an exciting opportunity to take part in our small community and our mission to educate for social change. We seek innovative, motivated individuals with excellent communication skills, and the passion to improve our organization and the lives of the people we work with. You have an opportunity to make a large lasting impact for this grassroots organization and the entire Pacaja community!
We offer accommodation options with local families (at a cost, all profit being turned back into the centre), as well as referrals to affordable hostels and shared appartments in town.
Unfortunately we cannot provide free room and board to volunteers, being a very small organization which provides free educational services to the community. Please contact us for information about accommodation.

No more than 5 hours, 5 days a week
In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteers stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
