Dear Diana, I just wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful 3.5 weeks I spent with you. Our time together was truly special! I loved interacting with all the dogs, each one so friendly and well socialized, reflecting the wonderful care and love you give them. You are an incredibly strong woman with a big heart, and I admire your dedication to your project. It’s evident that you have amazing ideas and a passion for what you do, I wish for you to continue welcoming many great people who can be part of this journey with you. One of the highlights for me was our trip to the mountains, enjoying a lovely hike with the dogs. Those moments were unforgettable, and I'm so grateful to have experienced them with you and your furry friends. Thank you once again for everything, Diana. I feel lucky to have met both you and your adorable companions! Warmest wishes, Jana

I stayed with Gwenn for about a week and a half, and even though it was short, it was absolutely wonderful! I felt truly included by the whole family. I got along with all the daughters, and the grandchildren were super adorable !! The house has a lively, inviting atmosphere and is largely run by women, which I really loved! Gwenn is a true powerhouse, managing so many things at once, while still making sure everything runs smoothly and you feel completely welcome. She is thoughtful, communicative, and generous, always making you feel comfortable. Every day is different, flexible and relaxed, which I loved. The property is beautiful, with chickens, horses, and a small forest nearby. On the days she wasn’t working from home, Gwenn took me along to Ottawa, which was such a nice bonus. It’s a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature, while still having the opportunity to explore the city. I would happily come back anytime! :)

We originally invited Jen and Colin to visit for long weekend, with no particular expectations of working. However they like to keep busy, like to try new things, and have a strong work ethic. They ended up accomplishing far more than we would have asked for. They did light carpentry, hardening our home for a wildfire mitigation inspection. They also did quite a bit of firewood processing. They work competently without supervision, given general instructions. They plan their work intelligently, and are conscientious, skilled and thoughtful. Jen and Colin work extremely well together, complimenting each other’s skills and inclinations. Jen is fascinated by power tools. I introduced her to a variety of new (to her) pneumatic tools and she wanted me to provide her with construction tasks to practice until she felt she had mastered the tool. That worked out very well for me. Jen is slightly obsessive about neatness and detail. (I blame her training in astrophysics, where an error of 1 part in a million is an unacceptably huge error.) Jen was patient and committed to making sure that all joints were tight, all margins were uniform, and all nail lines were straight and equidistant. She would make a good cabinetmaker or an excellent finish carpenter, if she ever wants a second career. (I fear she is too meticulous to become a good framing carpenter.) The 32 ton hydraulic log splitter was also a huge hit. Jen and Colin had never used one before, and asked if they could practice with it. I had a pile of log rounds, including a couple dozen 30+” rounds that weighed 100 pounds or more. I showed them how to change the ram and anvil orientation from horizontal to vertical to accommodate the large rounds. They happily worked all afternoon, asking us to delay dinner so they could finish the pile. They came in tired, and smug and very satisfied with themselves. Once again, it worked out well for me. One afternoon, Jen and Colin helped me collect several truckloads of logs from a neighbor’s lot. We drove a mile or so on dirt roads, and collected several thousand pounds of limbed logs from a wildfire mitigation site on the mountain side. At home, the logs had to loaded off the truck, and stacked uphill for further processing. It was several hours of hard physical labor. They seemed pleased with the afternoon, and I was also. Jennifer walked the dog several times a day which freed me up to keep working and pleased the dog immensely. Jen also gave us valuable and insightful coaching for working with our new rescue dog. Once again, a huge help. In addition to helping with outdoor carpentry and firewood projects, Colin was a huge help with preparing meals. Particularly useful is his ability to forage in the ‘fridge and pantry for leftovers and “odds & ends” and turn them into attractive tasty side dishes that complemented whatever we had prepared for dinner. Colin was courteous, patient, resourceful and cheerful while working side by side with a stranger in a cramped galley kitchen, with a limited and eccentric selection of tools and supplies. Jen and Colin were a pleasure to have with us. They are welcome back anytime.

It seems almost impossible to give a feedback that is accurate to such a awesome place! We loved our stay at Hugo's and had the most amazing time! The place is surrounded by beautiful nature that you can enjoy all day long, the direct access to the lake gives you the perfect refreshment after work and the tranquility and silence invites to just chill and be calm. The food we cooked was out of this world because we literally had everything that we needed! It invites you to be creative, you should definitely try to make homemade pasta and bread when you visit this place! Hugo picks up groceries every weekend so we really couldn't complain about anything missing! Also, the kitchen view is stunning! Hugo as a person is somebody we really can call a friend now! He is awesome and we are so happy that we met him before he went to travel. He keeps the tasks really really clear, you always know what to do and in general he is just a cool and loving guy! We already miss the cat and the dogs as they are your almost 24/7 companion at this place! Most of the work we did was weeding, sometimes planting seeds and dragon fruit or work with the machete. All in all super doable works where you can really see progress and a big difference! Enrique, who is meanwhile in charge is also just a awesome human being! Hugo definitely did good in chosing him as a guardian! Hugo, we wish you aaaall the best in this world, that you keep growing a million dragon fruits and eat kaaspatzln every now and than! Much love, Matthias and Lara

I had an amazing time with Ferenc and Istvan! They are incredibly welcoming and truly lovely hosts, and I felt completely at home. Their dogs are adorable, which made the stay even more enjoyable. I stayed for almost a week and really appreciated the free time to do my own thing. They went far beyond what you’d expect from hosts, always thoughtful and generous. Plus, I was spoiled with really delicious food. I would happily come back anytime and highly recommend them! :)

Erin and I absolutely loved our stay here. We couldn't recommend Workawaying here more! We stayed for two weeks in mid-September. Chris picked us up from the bus stop in Wolfville (just one bus straight from Halifax), and at once we felt so warmly welcomed. She took us right up to the centre where we stayed in a cute, cosy off-grid cabin with a beautiful view of the forested gully and of the stars at night. Our two weeks were packed full of variety and adventure. We got to help kids make art at a monthly community supper/art evening in town, we helped to host a local meeting held at the centre, and most awesome of all, we helped out with a weekend camp for a youth orchestra, which was complete with stargazing, s'mores and a wonderful performance! The majority of our work at this point in the fall was housekeeping, cleaning and kitchen duties. This was fun and rewarding, and we were able to work together as a couple. We were also given plenty of opportunities to learn things about the garden and beehives and to participate in the arts events. Also, we were fed extremely generously. There were always leftovers from catered events and aside from those, we always found above and beyond what we needed in the commercial kitchen. On our days off and after our shifts, we borrowed the centre's bikes to visit the beach down the road, chatted to other staff or the centre's visitors, and found lovely sunny spots under trees to read. Chris and Ken made sure we got some time away from the centre as well. They took us out for a whole day one weekend visiting two county fairs and the local farmer's market. This was a hoot for me (Pippi) as I got a real taste of rural Canadian culture! Oh, did I mention, the other staff at the centre are absolutely lovely? I was actually lucky enough to celebrate my 23rd birthday while on this Workaway, and everyone surprised me with a homemade cake (Ken's specialty) and a handwritten card. This was the first Workaway Erin and I have ever done. We were blown away by Chris and Ken's hospitality and kindness. This is a must-do if you're Workawaying in Nova Scotia. We left feeling so inspired, recharged and thankful. Please come and do your Workaway here! :)

This was my very first Workaway experience and it did not disappoint! Monica and Ian are very friendly and bubbly, easy to talk to and we had several laughs. It was really fun joining Monica on her trailer training/horse training days and assisting her with filming. An amazing experience with lots of opportunities, great cultural exchange. Her work was very educational and inspiring. Monica's farm was a lovely place in the countryside, the horses were very friendly and there was always lot of fun jobs to keep busy with. The house itself was very cozy and the room was more than ideal, very comfortable bed! We baked and cooked, I really loved being able to sit outside for dinner most nights. Only wish I was staying for longer!

Andrei is a very thoughtful, responsible and polite person - it was a pleasure to host him. He mainly helped me with painting, some gardening and kitchen chores. Also, I really appreciated how he truly connected with my dogs and gave them lots of cuddles every day. He played with Ramses so he was in heaven of joy. When Andrei was here I had a bit of a work peak and he was so understanding about it which I also really like about him too, that he is empathetic. As I was so busy I invited my bonus dad Göran (80+) over so they could hang out and it was really nice that they got along so well. Andrei is really good with photography and kindly enough sent me some really nice photos of the dogs too. He has a strong sense of curiosity, eager to learn and understand or to try anything new - great qualities. He took on all kinds of tasks and performed them very well with a good eye for detail. We shared a lot and had deep conversations too about life which I enjoy. Thanks Andrei! Welcome back anytime.

"Done is better than perfect." That was the first lesson that Marco taught us. We stayed with Marco for 3 weeks, pulling weeds, walking Shy, cleaning the rooms, working with clay on the pizza oven, and on the fireplace. We mostly did a lot of cleaning, but we were rewarded with a pizza party farewell, where Marco made nine pizzas.

Right from the start when Peter met Beau and Mercedes in Matera, their resourcefulness was apparent; although they arrived by bus as the train was last minute cancelled, they found Peter who was trying to locate where the bus had dropped them off. They fitted in immediately and were a pleasure to host as workaways. Beau as a civil engineer used his expertise to design and build our rain water collection system. They did an excellent job preparing the orto for winter planting, and many other essential seasonal jobs. As well as resourceful they were friendly, hardworking, and determined to ensure a job well done whether working with us or independently. We enjoyed their company and conversation at mealtimes. It was a pleasure to have them stay with us, and we would be pleased to have them back as workaways if they ever wanted to return, from the other side of the world, Norfolk Island, Australia!

Gabi & Lucas are great! We had a wonderful time with them. Gabi and Lukas work diligently and independently, always see what needs to be done, and have helped us greatly in improving our pousada. Their good humor is contagious, and we already miss them. I really hope to see these two radiant hearts again. We highly recommend them.

What began as a plan to stay just a few months with Courtney and Devon quickly turned into a whole year—I simply couldn’t leave this beautiful family. From the very beginning, I felt so welcomed, not only by Courtney and Devon, but also by their kind, loving, and wonderfully fun wee girls. Their warmth and generosity made me feel at home straight away, and being part of their family life was such a joy. Living on Bowen Island was an incredible experience in itself. It’s a truly special place with stunning beaches, unforgettable sunsets, and the kind of slower island rhythm that makes you feel deeply connected to nature and community. This year has been filled with so many meaningful moments, laughter, and learning, and I’m so grateful to have shared it with such an amazing family. I couldn’t recommend them more highly to anyone lucky enough to spend time with them.

Zoe and Elliot are a very pleasant couple and adapted to living our rural life. Their help was greatly appreciated and in particular they worked well to trim and shape the olive trees. Hopefully they have gained invaluable experience in the time spent with us for their future travels. Our dogs were happy and well cared for. We had many interesting and informative chats.

Jayne came to live with our family in August 2024 and ended up staying until August 2025! She became a member of the family and our girls totally adore her. She was always organized, patient, kind and trustworthy and made the most of her experience here on Bowen Island. As an experienced teacher, Jayne was able to set us up with literacy games for our 6 year old which have been a fun aid in teaching our kiddo to read. We would not hesitate to recommend Jayne as a workaway/au pair!

Sören was with us for three weeks and it was an awesome experience. We enjoyed each day of his stay. Sören was very polite, decent, and always gentle. He did take care of our cats and was very tidy and clean. We had great conversations and laughed a lot together. The work we agreed on was done very good and effective. Sören is an extraordinarily smart person, he helped us to renovate our barn and did take care of our garden. The joint work was always nice and respectful and problems were solved together. Sören has fantastic teamwork skills and is able to work standalone. All in all he is definitely one of the nicest persons we met in our lives. Actually, we agreed on a second stay in November and are looking very much forward to it! Thank you Sören for your engery you put into our home. See you soon!

I had a really great time at the farm! I was there for 7 days but it seemed to be longer, 'cause of the many good things that we did together. Glen and Karen were so open and kind, they could teach and explain me everything about tasks and they were always really patient. I could learn a lot from their way of living, and their amazing energy in do many things every day. All the animals were really-really friendly, I find it so cool that even their chickens like the people! The sleeping in the cozy yurt and the narural, peaceful surrounding could give me a menthal refresh too. You have there really time for yourself in the afternoon. The English tea-brake (with milk:) in the morning helps to find your balance in working and relax. I really think that this place is not only bring you closer to the animals and plants, but bring you closer to yourself and this is so beautiful! My favorite tasks were to pick up all the walnuts and apples from the garden, picking herbs and feeding the so lovely but also naughty goats.:) Karen and Glen do everything from their heart so the whole farm is just full of life and shining from human care. So glad to experience that!!🤍🌿

We had a wonderful time with Emma's visit to our home. She's fun and responsible at the same time. She became Rio's best friend from the first day they played clay in the garden, and Rio never wanted to leave her side. She's a sweet, intelligent, and friendly person. We really enjoyed talking with her at sunset and also her cooking recipes. We laughed a lot walking around Mount Etna and on the beach, running and jumping like we were kids again. Emma definitely brought a wave of youth and joy to the house. She was always super available during critical moments, lending a hand with whatever was needed. She just left and we already miss her. Ciao Memma =)
