Couldn’t wish for a better first Workaway experience! Diogo always brings good energy. He’s very friendly and easy to connect with. He made me feel very comfortable in Apúlia from the very moment I arrived. We also had some really nice deep talks together, and Diogo even took us on a trip to Gerês — it was so beautiful! An experience I will never forget. The work was pretty chill, and I had a lot of time to enjoy the sunny days and explore the surroundings. Diogo mostly trusted me with painting — something I’m more skilled at and comfortable with — and I really appreciated that. The work itself was even satisfying for me: painting houses right by the ocean, with the sound of waves and warm sunlight… it never really felt like work. We stayed in comfortable, cute little houses with an ocean view. Falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves was fantastic. And the sunsets there are something truly special. I enjoyed every moment in Apúlia and have very warm memories of the time I spent there. Thank you so much, Diogo!

It was a pure delight to have Amy here!! We had fun, great exchanges of information and points of view, and we really felt like she became part of the family and part of the place! Amy went above and beyond in her efforts to help, and really wanted to give of herself enormously, which was fabulous :) She communicated well, was fastidious in all her work, eager to learn and teach, and got along great with everyone here, including all the animals. She was extremely respectful and very polite, happy and nice to have around. We can't thank her enough for being here and living with us and helping us so, so much. So happy that she wants to come back again next year!! We miss her already - anyone will be lucky to have her as a Workaway or as a friend! Until next time!

We are so thankful Karen chose to come help us for 15 days. She has such a pleasant, intuitive personality with fabulous comprehension and an excellent work ethic. She was always positive and willing to help outside and inside. We were able to get many tasks accomplished and had fun doing so. She got along well with others here at the same time. We wish our schedule allowed for a longer stay. We hope to see Karen again and plan to stay in touch.

Ivy was outstanding. I'm so impressed with her discipline, but she also is so calm and patient. That is a really great pairing! I never had to wonder if she would do something halfway, or behind schedule. She was just absolutely on it. She also is very kind, and heroically saved an injured squirrel that a dog was playing with. That spirit is so perfect for our sanctuary. Ivy is just also really easy going, she's always good with the food served, the jobs that came up, the weather's idiosyncrasies. Just really easy to work with. She's welcome back here any time, and we're excited to hear bout her future endeavors. Thank you Ivy!

I had the privilege of staying with Haico for around 10 days in May 2026. Haico was fun to work with and very interesting to talk to. He was a very accommodating host and went the extra mile to show me a good time in Benfeita. We worked on his communal garden (weeding, planting, and setting up a drip system), his new piece of land (where I did some brambling and cleaned a water tank), prepared hives, and did some beekeeping. I was particularly interested in learning more about beekeeping and Haico was a great instructor in answering all my questions about the bees and explaining what he was doing. I learned so much and got the hands on experience I was looking for with bees. When I wasn't working, I went on some beautiful hikes, explored local markets, and spent time with Haico and his friends. Haico did a great job of introducing me to the community of Benfeita and his friends. I played basketball with him and his buddies and got coffee/meals with different people in the town each day. Haico also has great music/movie taste and it was fun to share music with him. He's really fun to talk to and has some great stories (make sure to ask him about his music festival experiences)! Also, make sure to ask him to make his soy stir fry!! Haico, thank you for welcoming me into your home. I will miss you, Ripley, and Chomsky. I can't wait to see how you further develop your land and house. I wish you all the best going forward and I hope I can visit again one day!

Eliis and Luca are a lovely couple, so nice to have around. Eliis stayed with me for some weeks while Luca stayed with a host nearby. Eliis undertook every task I gave her with enthusiasm and power. She loved all my animals, even the sheep( who can be very contrary) and they loved her. I was able to go away for 1 week and trusted her 100%. I am forever grateful to her. When Luca visited, he helped me out several times with maintenance issues / always with great skill, patience and a big smile on his face. If you are fortunate to have them stay with you, you are VERY lucky.

My time at Liz's place was a wonderful experience and a perfect start to my time in Canada. The entire stay was very uncomplicated, there was a lot of interesting exchange, plus she makes the most delicious sandwiches for lunch. :-)

I’m pleased to provide this reference for Guillaume, who stayed with us for 10 days in May. Guillaume was a pleasure to host from day one. He quickly integrated into our daily routine and consistently showed a positive, proactive attitude. He helped keep the common areas clean and tidy without needing reminders. He worked efficiently and left everything in better condition than he found it. Guillaume assisted with tree maintenance and general garden work. He was careful, followed instructions well, and wasn’t afraid of physical tasks outdoors. Beyond the help, he was great company. We explored several local hikes together, and he was always respectful, reliable, and easy to communicate with. He’s responsible, trustworthy, and adaptable, which makes him a great fit for any host looking for practical help and good energy. Bon voyage!

Staying in Karolinas home was my first workaway, and I'm glad to have had such opportunity. The house is great, animals are great, especially dogs and puppies which were born right before my arrival. There's plenty of work, since it's a big property, so there's lots of diffrent possible tasks to do, I mainly chopped and moved around wood. Surrounding countryside is also a big plus, with close connections to Teplice and Usti nad Labou. It was really nice and memorable.

I found both Christin and Luca to be extremely accepting, open, kind, and generous people. My first workaway experience and I highly recommend it to anyone considering! Eating vegan, living in a rural area, and gardening were all very new to me. I felt extremely grateful to be exploring these things with Luca and Christin because they had a wealth of knowledge to share and they were always willing to stop what they were doing to answer my questions and they always answered them thoughtfully and completely. Beyond the questions I asked, I also learned a lot by simply being in their presence and feeling their dedication to their project. The energy in their place is unique to anything I’ve experienced. Upon arriving, I felt quite disoriented standing in this energy - a feeling that I remembered as being similar to how I felt while talking with a very genuinely happy monk and while confronted with the large calming presence of an elephant. I don’t mean to say that Luca and Christin are some religious figures or something, but they have certainly poured a lot of themselves into being caring stewards of their land and the earth and their land has certainly rewarded them for their effort and I think this creates a very unique atmosphere that was very special for me to experience. I would also say they are very culturally aware and are equally committed to bringing this experience to those around them, and in a way that is very accepting of other identities. While staying with them I was able to relax in a slower paced life and reconnect with nature which was exactly what I was hoping for as I had just spent a lot of time in big cities beforehand. When I was looking for something to do after work they provided me with great suggestions about things in the area like a sweet swimming spot in the river and a couple different hikes - some of which were right off of their property and a couple of which we all went on together. I also took a couple trips to the nearby towns (1 hr walking but hitchhiking was super easy) where I ate good Sicilian food and explored. The surrounding nature is incredibly beautiful and accessible. Mount Etna is always staring at you while at this place and it offers skiing, hiking, lava caves, potential eruptions, and beautiful views. Its proximity to the beaches is incredible and the beaches themselves are outstanding. We traded off cooking every night and I learned a lot about vegan recipes, bread, and Luca was always available when I had questions about spices and whatnot. The food Luca cooked was always incredible and the variety of food they had available for everyone made me feel super well nourished. I really enjoyed the mealtime conversations and they were a nice way to get to know everyone and learn more about the sanctuary lifestyle. I found the work to be a nice level of physically demanding while also allowing me to learn new skills like planting, building a fence, and operating various power tools. The other volunteer and I were also left to create our own schedules which allowed me to organize my days freely. I also really liked the other volunteer, Teun, who I shared the time with, but that is for a different review haha. Thank you Christin, Luca!

I spent 2.5 wonderful weeks with Jan and Larry on their rhubarb farm. It was my first workaway experience, and I can definitely recommend doing a farm stay here! They are incredibly warm-hearted and generous hosts. The work was varied—picking rhubarb, planting flowers, weeding, and mulching—and always followed by a delicious lunch. I loved cooking together in the evenings, trying amazing recipes, and sharing family-style meals with them and the other two volunteers (a couple) while listening to their amazing travel stories. It was always so much fun to end the evening that way. Jan has great vegetarian recipes, and we ate a lot of delicious rhubarb pastries, yay! In the afternoons and on my days off, I was able to explore the area by bike, we made campfires (and S'mores), I got to meet their friends and went on beautiful walks on Cobble Hill Mountain and in Bright Angel Regional Park with Jan and their adorable dog, Khaleesi. Thank you for everything! :)

I spent two weeks at Anek’s farm, and it was a truly special experience. He is a kind hearted person, always cheerful, helpful, and attentive to yours needs. From the very first moment, he made me feel comfortable and sincerely welcome. The farm is located in a small village in Gemrany, a place where you can embrace "slow living" in a peaceful, environment. My main tasks included gardening, farm work, and cooking. Since I didn't have any prior agricultural experience, I really appreciated Anek’s patience; he always took the time to explain my tasks and taught me a lot also about sustainability. I enjoyed very much preparing traditional Italian dishes, also using wild herbs picked from the garden and fresh produce grown directly on the farm. Anek always enjoyed my cooking, which gave me a great sense of satisfaction. I also had the pleasure of meeting his family and some of his friends, where I enjoyed some really cool cultural exchanges. Anek and I got along really well, we shared deep conversations, recipes, and life experiences. If you are looking for an experience in a peaceful place where you can live simply yet meaningfully, this is definitely the right spot. I highly recommend it and truly hope to return soon!

I had such a wonderful stay at Rivendell in Temecula that it's hard to sum it up in one go, but I'll give it a try! First of all, many thanks to Paul, Kelly, and Diane, who are some of the kindest, most hospitable people you'll ever meet. Paul is a top-tier cook, Kelly will make sure you're stocked up on groceries, and Diane will snap pics of all the great moments with her digital camera! I felt so welcome during the three weeks that I spent there, and getting to know each of them was truly a pleasure. The sanctuary is full of bustling animal personalities, like Leonard the Escape Artist, Bilbo the Spinning Pig, and Gladdy the Zoomie Queen. They are all so sweet and lovable, and taking care of them was very straightforward (regular feeding, water changes, and pen clean-outs). Of course, they also enjoyed things like brushing and petting. My camera roll is now filled with these cuties. The RV (Luna) was really comfortable, with everything you need: space to work, sleep, shower, and cook. I was editing a novel while staying at Rivendell, and was able to work (and read) in the RV, as well as in the back garden and down by the creek. Lots of spaces to rest and relax in, and plenty of time when chores are done, with no shortage of beautiful views to take in! Again, my camera roll is stacked with evidence. Whether I was giving pig belly rubs, enjoying the misty mountain mornings, or lounging in the hammock by the creek, I found a sense of peace and grounding that I had long been missing in Chicago. For the time of respite that I spent at Rivendell, I will be forever grateful!

Rachel stayed with us for two weeks, and it was truly a wonderful experience. She is like an old tree — someone whose shade you can sit under and simply rest. She brings a sense of calm and comfort. She doesn’t judge or criticize, and she listens with genuine attention. She is deeply empathetic and clearly very experienced in life. Rachel handled all her tasks extremely well — from cleaning to helping with our agritourism work. She is someone you can trust completely with a task and be sure it will be done carefully and responsibly. She is very independent and actually prefers working on her own. As long as tasks are clearly explained, she manages everything perfectly. She is patient, competent, and has a very peaceful presence — a truly kind soul. I believe any host would be very happy to have her. She is one of those people who instantly make you feel comfortable and at ease. I’ve always loved Australians, and Rachel only confirmed my belief that they are wonderful, easygoing people.

We have just spent the most wonderful 10 days with our host Kelly. She is so much fun and put us at our ease straight away. It was such a positive, uplifting, and fun experience. The work was never hard and Kelly only wanted us to do jobs that we enjoyed doing. Kelly was so considerate of our needs and she endeavoured to make us as comfortable as possible. She is a wonderful cook(actually more than wonderful) and she taught us how to make Ravioli FROM SCRATCH, as well as Ragu and Carbonara. We got to watch the master make sourdough and brioche. Kelly treated us to the most amazing local Porchetti. If you get the chance you should try it. Staying with Kelly allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culture and we met many of the locals who treated us so well. We felt like part of the family enjoying brunches that were like feasts. Such a wonderful family. We were given tours of the area, as well as suggestions for trips and had plenty of down time to do as we pleased. If you get the chance to spend some time here, do not hesitate. You will leave having gained so many experiences and a heart full of joy. Thankyou Kelly. GRAZIE MILLE
