this was my first experience with workaway, and it was everything i wanted. i was looking for an opportunity to do a templestay and to join a community where buddhism is a part of every day life. i learned so much more in practice, doing daily meditation and bows, joining buddhist ceremonies, feeling thankful before every meal, and meeting some of the kindest, loveliest people who live the dharma every day. words barely seem like enough to express my immense gratitude for all the members of the community who opened their hearts, lives, and home to me. thanks to doahn beopwoonim and everyone in the community, i have found the answers to so many of my questions regarding the meaning of everything, answers i have been searching for basically my whole life. i dont know what other workaways are like, because i really only joined this platform seeking an experience like the one i had here, but i imagine this stay is unlike anything else. i stayed for a month, but the time went by so quickly, and i felt i wanted to still stay longer even when it was time to leave. i ate so much good food and got to visit many places with the community members, but at the end of the month, i was only starting to understand the buddhist teachings and to truly feel like i could open up more to the community. it is important to come here with a willing mind and open heart, and i wish i would have let down my walls a bit sooner. the last thing doahn beopwoonim said before i left was that i would always be able to come home here, so i am looking forward to the day when i can return :)

Reinhold was an outstanding volunteer who served with our NGO in Koh Dach from June 19 to July 11, demonstrating exceptional dedication across all his responsibilities. As a teacher for youth, children, and interns, he consistently arrived on time and went above and beyond by helping with cooking, preparing classrooms, and welcoming students daily. His innovative teaching methods and focus on pronunciation significantly boosted students' confidence - they transformed from being hesitant about their English to speaking freely with friends. Reinhold's flexibility extended beyond teaching; he also maintained facilities by fixing toilets, whiteboards, and walls. His positive impact on student confidence and his willingness to contribute wherever needed made him an invaluable team member.

Antonin volunteered with our NGO in Kampot from March 16 to April 29 and proved to be a solid contributor to our programs. He handled his responsibilities well, including physical work, teaching children's classes, and helping with evening youth sessions. His hardworking attitude and friendly demeanor made him adaptable to local conditions. Students found him approachable and gentle, which helped them feel comfortable practicing English. Overall, Antonin was a reliable volunteer who fulfilled his duties effectively.

Kathy and Greg are the most amazing people in all of Alaska. If you ever get the chance to volunteer there, don’t hesitate. I promise you’ll feel like part of the family from the very first second. I stayed there for two months and loved every single moment. Their animals are awesome. Mountaineer – the most handsome llama, Lady – the crazy jumping dog, Bergie – the donkey who loves eating wood (including his own shelter), ducks, chickens, tons of pigs… They also try to show you as much as they can around the area – like Homer, the beach, or walking to the river if you're up for it. They’re true Alaskans, and listening to their stories is honestly so inspiring – especially the bear and hunting ones. I’m definitely coming back as soon as I can. Their whole family is amazing, too. Their grandkids are awesome, and their youngest – Harper – is the best little helper. I had so much fun with her. I honestly can’t even put into words how grateful I am for them and the time I spent there. ❤️

Lina and Ida were wonderful workaways! They were awesome with our horses and pets and did all the chores with great care and attention to detail. They are both great riders and our horses loved them. Super adventurous and friendly, they were a pleasure to have at the house/stable and will be missed. Highly recommend to any future host!

There’s absolutely nothing to fault — this place is truly wonderful! Patricia is calm and kind, and every meal she made was absolutely delicious. 🥣 Sydney made me laugh with his occasional jokes and gave me many chances to try new things, which I really appreciated! 🍇 Tilly the dog, and the cats Gin and Tonic, were all so friendly and adorable — they comforted me every single day. 🐾 Surrounded by quiet, beautiful nature, staying in the cozy cabin became one of my favorite memories. 🌿 I would love to come back one day, and I can confidently recommend this place to everyone. ✨

Me and my friend (Leia) both got the incredible opportunity to stay on Teshima in one of Alan’s houses for 2 weeks. It was truly a dream. We spent about 3 hours a day working and the days off were very flexible. Alan was incredibly accommodating and tried his best to make sure that we had a nice time on the island. The island is rather small but it’s an absolutely breathtaking place with beautiful beaches, mountains, forests and loads of wildlife. The work consisted of helping him weed his vegetable garden, digging for potatoes, feeding the chickens, giving the two goats water, cleaning out an old uninhabited Japanese house, and cleaning his absolutely stunning Airbnbs before and/or after guests arrive/leave. We often got to bring home the complementary bread, eggs and strawberry jam when the guests hadn’t finished it which was absolutely amazing. By the end of our time there we were definitely wishing that we could’ve stayed longer, but alas, our next Workaway was booked in advance and calling our names.

We have never been so spoiled in a volunteering! Thank you so much Frédérique & Fernand for these two weeks at your beautiful place. We had our own very comfortable little house with kitchen and bathroom, and Frédérique & Fernand were so helpful if we needed anything! The work was general house and garden maintenance like deep cleaning the kitchen, painting the little house, sanding the rust on fences… nothing complicated, and only between 8:30 to 12. It was so nice to get to know these two during diners together (thank you again 🫶), we laughed a lot! And also the area is really cool (the beach at 5 minutes walk, the pueblo nearby, and los Frailes easy to reach by bus). We 100% recommend this opportunity : lovely people, the work is always well explained, and the place is amazing.

Lucas stayed with us around 3weeks and was an excellent Workawayer! He has great manners, learns quickly, and is very communicative. He adapted easily to our environment and completed every task perfectly and responsibly. Although he isn’t Japanese, he showed a strong understanding of Japanese manners and culture, and he behaved with great respect and harmony. His Japanese was fair, and even though his Japanese and our English were not perfect, we always tried to improve together and support each other through language exchange. It was a fun and meaningful experience for both of us. He was always punctual—usually arriving early—and ready to help at any time. Lucas was reliable, thoughtful, and easy to work with. He never hesitated to offer a helping hand. We highly recommend Lucas to any future host. Our door is always open to him!

I had a great time at Jackie’s farm while staying there in June! From the moment I arrived, Jackie,John (and the other workawayers) welcomed me with open arms, and I felt comfortable and included right away. If you love birds, this place is heaven – there are so many different kinds! Before I came, I had never even held a bird. Now, thanks to Jackie, I can confidently say I’ve become a reliable goose/chicken/duck-catcher. There are sheep, horses, and dogs and cats to take care of too, and they always enjoy a nice petting! The chores are well organized, and once I got used to where everything was, they became quite relaxing. We took care of the animals in the morning and evening, and in between, we did lots of fun things with Jackie or worked on projects like the flower garden. If you want to experience real Canadian culture, this is definitely the place to be. Jackie and John have tons of stories and unexpected jokes to tell—some of which caught me completely off guard and made me laugh for ages. The work was very fair – Jackie never asked us to do anything she wouldn’t do herself. She’s out there working alongside us and makes sure everyone has a say in what’s going on. I learned so much about birds during my stay! Jackie has a ton of knowledge and shares it all so patiently. I’m usually super shy at first (sorry again, Jackie, for my RBF), but from the beginning, I was never scared to ask questions. Jackie always made sure I understood everything fully and never made me feel rushed or silly for not knowing something. We went on trail rides, hung out at the beach, went to a rodeo, saw lots of Canadian wildlife, and on my very last day, I got to see the northern lights!!!! I honestly didn’t want to leave. From failing to catch Scotchgard, to getting dragged around by a donkey, to exploring trails on horseback – every day was an adventure! Thank you so much, Jackie and John, for letting me stay with you – I’ll miss you and all the animals so much!

Sam and Brendon are the loveliest and most fun people – they made me feel right at home from the very beginning. They have a beautiful property overlooking the ocean, where you can enjoy the best morning coffee with a stunning view! Most of the day is spent outside working with the horses, who are all incredibly sweet. Each day brings something a little different, so it never gets boring. On your days off, you can explore Byron Bay – and of course, there’s always time for cuddling the two cutest dogs and kitty Louie <3 I truly enjoyed my time there and can’t wait to come back for a visit!

Such a positive attitude to life and to any task asked of him. Samuele is a joy to have in your home always smiling, loved being part of a community and got a lot of satisfaction from sharing his traditional Italian cuisine with us all- he cooked some gorgeous food, but the aubergine pizza was simply delicious (and I don't usually like aubergines 🤣) Samuele is always so eager to do a great job, which he did many including filling and painting plasterboard, walls and even tried his hand at insulating for the first time, so is really adaptable to whatever is needed, with a great attitude. He worked very hard creating a solution to a landslide obscuring a previous path access, which was really appreciated. He introduced us to his friend Paolo, who joined us for a week volunteering, due to a no show and also worked very hard mainly painting. He is a quiet soul who was accepted well by the rest of the group and enjoyed practicing his English. Both of them had a wonderful sense of humour. His parting gift to us was a beautiful lavender plant which sits proudly in our orchard and even cleared out and reorganized our cutlery drawer!! So kind 😊 Samuele and Paolo you are always welcome.

Lida stayed with us for 4 weeks, I’d never met anyone from Finland before and it was a lovely experience as we had many chat’s sharing details of life and living in our respective countries. Nothing was too much trouble for Lida, she worked quietly and efficiently at every single job I asked her to do. I can’t recommend her enough. The time flew by and before we knew it, she was heading home. She is definitely welcome back any time, as we were all sad to see her go as she blended seamlessly into our lives.

We hosted Kyrylo for a week. He is a very conscientious worker, with lots of skills to draw on. He helped us with painting, building, digging, cleaning, gardening and more - always super willing to give a hand, hard working, and kind and respectful to have around. Recommended!

This was my first Workaway experience and I couldn't have asked for a better one! Christina, Florian and kids (my new family 😉), I cannot thank you enough for the amazing time you provided me and the memories we made together! I stayed 2 weeks with this beautiful family and I honestly wish I could've stayed longer! They made me feel so welcomed as soon as I walked through the door and it didn't take long at all for me to feel as if I was truly apart of their family. My "work" (which didn't feel like work at all) included mainly spending time with the children doing various activities both outdoor and indoor while also helping with general household tasks such as loading/unloading the dishwasher, hanging out laundry, gardening and general cleaning. The children taught me some new skills of juggling, riding a unicycle and solving a Rubik's cube. I was able to join the children during their circus and acrobatics lessons as well as join the whole family when they went out with their friends. I was also able to explore other parts of Switzerland during my own time when I wanted too. I truly had the most memorable time here, they are memories I will forever cherish! I cannot wait to come back and I will be sure to make my stay longer for next time 😉💗

Brenda and Wilhelm were really delightful company, and we only wish they could have stayed for longer! They achieved a lot in a short time, and approached everything they did – from clearing round our old bread oven/barbecue to clearing brambles from the millpond wall while balancing precariously in our little boat, via cooking the most delicious fajitas for us – with tremendous care and thoroughness. We had fascinating and entertaining conversations about our different cultures (and their English is so good!), and they were exceptionally thoughtful and appreciative in their response to the mill and its environment. They were unfailingly willing and positive, extremely generous and kind, and we particularly loved the way they were constantly spotting little things that they could do to help. We wish them huge success in their studies and all their projects and we hope one day to catch up with them again.
