Vicky, Ann and Barrie left this morning after three glorious weeks of help, laughs and many hours of enjoyable company. They were here with two Japanese guys for part of their stay and were very welcoming and helpful with them in helping them enjoy their first visit to Europe. Many tasks were completed to a very high standard. Along with the basic daily activities of sweeping, doggy walking , hen feeding etc. barns have been tidied and swept, swimming pool area cleaned and mopped, tables and chairs varnished, lower garden and hen house cleaned, with the courtyard painted and stairwell cleaned and some interior painting too. Vicky is a great cook and we enjoyed her bread making. I am confident we will stay in contact and remain friends as we all enjoyed each other's company enormously.

My friends and I had a very lovely stay with Lara in September. Lara was very keen to share her house, food and fishing boat with us, and made every effort to be generous. She has a large property with a lot of things to do, so the work was varied, but always manageable with her well equipped tool shed.

Tiago's diligence to the tasks was great - he was efficient and thorough. His knowledge of spices was excellent, and he established a spice garden for me.

It’s going to be difficult to put into words how highly I value my experience with Raúl in Guatemala — but I’ll try anyway. This was, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable, rewarding, and educational two months I’ll ever spend in my life — that much I know. The project is more than just inspirational and admirable. I genuinely felt completely at home and at peace during my stay, despite being thousands of miles from the UK. Raúl is by far one of the most inspirational people I’ve met in my 25 years so far. His dedication to the academy and his students, his sheer stubbornness not to let anything get in the way of his mission, and his generosity, sense of humour, energy and enthusiasm are the definition of infectious. I challenge anyone to be in a bad mood around this guy — he could make even a gravestone crack a smile. And it’s no exaggeration to say I wouldn’t have enjoyed this experience even a quarter as much without him. He’s just an incredible bloke — there’s no other way of putting it — and the world would be a better place with a few more of him in it. Raúl, thank you for everything. Your hard work and your permanent good mood are the backbone of why I think so highly of this experience. So, what’s this Workaway actually like? You get to live in a very homely flat in probably the most luxurious gated community in Palín. There are local shops, a supermarket, a restaurant, food stalls, a pharmacy, a hardware store… plus football pitches, basketball courts, and — yes — a swimming pool. You’ve got pretty much everything you could need, right on your doorstep. You’ll be working at the extremely charming English Academy in the centre of Palín, about a 10-minute drive from the apartment. Raúl gives you a lift every day (to and from the academy), and you’ll get to hear stories from his adventures, history of the town and Guatemala, or generally be woken up by his jokes and wild energy. When you arrive at the school, you’ll be greeted by the always-smiling Marco at the front desk, and the lovely Bella and Aura behind the counter/bar. The work itself had a really good amount of variety. Some days we’d be doing conversation classes with kids aged 9–14, other days it’d be older teenagers or adults. Sometimes we’d be teaching a full class something new, other times helping out one of the local teachers, running an activity, leading a discussion, or even just jumping in and taking over the whole lesson. There’s always something unexpected to keep you on your toes, and when you explain a concept well or get the class laughing and engaged — it gives you a proper buzz. One of those feelings you really treasure. Teaching and the Academy I was lucky enough to stay for two months, and I really recommend doing an extended stay if you can. You get to know the students and the staff, and it starts to feel like home. I also got the chance to teach two regular classes solo each week — advanced students on Saturday mornings, and a smaller intermediate group on Sunday mornings. These were the highlights of my week, no question. Being able to build a connection with my classes was something special, and I’ll remember those times for the rest of my life. The students at the academy are keen and motivated — a blessing, as a teacher. I remember one student, Kevin, who’d regularly come up at the front before or after class just to chat or get something explained again. You feed off their curiosity and energy — which I imagine is quite different from a school where the kids aren't necessarily there by choice. The Workaway doesn’t say you need Spanish, and technically you don’t. But genuinely, speaking Spanish made a huge difference to the connections I was able to make. Being able to explain something in both Spanish and English can really help, and it puts the students at ease too — they know you’ve been through the language-learning process, and that you’re making the effort to speak their language. I really would try and get to a B1 level (even higher, even better). It will honestly make everything better. My confidence in speaking Spanish improved loads just from being able to practice a little every day. And if you’re looking for a way to practice Spanish in a real-life setting — this is perfect. I spoke to the other teachers and staff in Spanish probably 80–90% of the time, and not only was that what I wanted, but I got the impression they appreciated it too. Tips & Tricks I Wish I Knew Before I'd had absolutely no teaching experience and zero training before this — but I didn’t feel out of my depth. The first week was definitely a bit of a learning curve while I figured things out, but here’s what I’d tell myself if I were starting again: - Use Kahoot — the students love it. It breaks things up and keeps them engaged. - Bring variety to your lessons. Three hours with teens is very doable, but you’ll want to get creative to keep their attention. - Think of ways to get them talking and using English. One of my favourite activities: - After a reading, ask students to shout out words or phrases they didn’t understand. - Write them on the board, ask them to translate them, and point out the words that are similar in Spanish because of their Latin roots (they’ll start noticing these themselves). - Then, pick 3–4 students to choose a word from the board and make a sentence or two with it. - Bonus points if they can make one sentence using all the words! - Afterwards, have them share their sentences. Write them on the board and ask the class to find the errors — they love this part. - It’s even better when someone writes a perfect sentence and the others are scratching their heads trying to “fix” it. This kind of activity really gets them thinking, boosts confidence, and breaks up the lesson nicely. Also: it’s just really satisfying when something you’ve come up with works well in class. You’ll feel great about it. Outside of Work Raúl really looks after you. He took us out loads — for food, drinks, little trips — and I had a lot of fun meeting locals, doing the stuff he and the teachers usually get up to. He even made sure my birthday was properly celebrated — a birthday I’ll genuinely never forget (hahaha). He is so easy to get on with and have a laugh with, and also very wise — which is a rare combo. Random Bits You Might Want to Know Bring flip flops (I bought a pair for 30Q / £3 out there). Bring suncream — it’s about £10 for a bottle locally. Swimming costume and goggles — if you like swimming Towels are provided in the flat I was there July–August. Shorts and t-shirt every day. Even when it rains, it’s warm — although once or twice the rain was absolutely torrential when you leave the school hahaha. Trips we did on weekends: Antigua (twice) El Paredón (twice) Lago Atitlán (once) Didn’t manage to get a volcano in unfortunately… Getting around: You use the mighty chicken bus. Super cheap, pretty reliable, and gets you where you need to go. Just ask the guys if they stop at wherever you're trying to go — they’re usually very helpful. Occasionally they’ll try and charge you a bit extra if your mental maths isn’t too strong — It’s insanely cheap tho so why not let them have an extra quid (personal opinion). The landscapes are incredible, the journeys so unique. You’ll have loads of downtime too — to chill, read, study Spanish, or go out exploring. Just be aware that you should be back inside the community before sunset unless you’re with locals — another reason to go out with Raúl. He knows everyone and will make sure you’re safe and have a good time. Final (random) tips: Take out cash in big chunks — ATMs charge you. I recommend trying as much Quetzalteca as you can hahah. Make tortillas with frijoles, aguacate y pico de gallo at home — cheap and delicious. Buy Picamás hot sauce — all the colours. My fave was the brown/red one. Nutella and other brand-name stuff is pricey — go for local versions. Say hi to Juan and Nicolas in the supermarket for me Go for walks around the community — it’s nice, and walking’s good for you. Sadly I never got to play football with the students after school — still gutted about that. Write down the names of all your students in class — and in the order they sit. Helps a lot with remembering them. Mine might still be kicking about somewhere in the school. Sorry if this has come out a bit rambly — there’s just so much to say about my time out there. All I can hope is that you have even half as good a time as I did. If you do, it’ll be something you remember for the rest of your life — genuinely one of the best things you’ll ever do. So yeah, good luck, learn Spanish, and choose Raúl :)

Helping Ida to cook didn't feel as work. I had time to go to yoga lessons, walks inside and outside Oslo, which was really nice. I also enjoyed discussing with her, about travelling and life in general. Ida is very caring and was always checking if I had everything. She also gave me advices on what I can do in my free time. I'm really glad I met her.

I had the most amazing workaway experience with Matteo and Francesca. They are incredibly kind and welcoming people and my week with them was one of the highlights of my whole trip! The work was very doable and there was lots of flexibility to choose different jobs or work at different times of day. I had plenty of free time to relax at their beautiful house and explore nearby beaches and towns. Francesca and Matteo were kind enough to include me in activities like hiking and going to the beach. I truly felt like I was part of the family! I would love to return one day☺️

I spent ten days with my partner at Dipak's House. It was really a great authentic nepali experience, in a traditional nepali house and traditional (delicious) meals. And all the family is very nice. Dipak showed us the market, the tea garden and brought us in the festival. Dashain with his family was incredible, they lent us traditional clothes and we feel part of the family. We also try (no really me) traditional danses. My only regret is than we don't really feel useful, because we don't help with the cow (it was not the season) and the same with the rice field. Maybe next time!

When I got Linda’s message and checked her profile, according to my experience, it is sometimes challenging to understand a mind of a 23-years-old girl volunteer. The first day, we went to my farm and I found out that she is totally understanding, sociable and has a good attitude towards the helping tasks. Even though she stayed just for five days and she was the only volunteer here, we had a very good time together and she helped me a lot. During our drives to and from the farm, we practiced Chinese a lot, so I hope it helped her in her further learning of the language. It is obvious she really wants to improve, sometimes maybe a bit too quickly and impatiently. But above all, I appreciate that Linda came to visit me and I hope she will some day come back to actually speak Chinese with me. Wish you all the best.

Victoria was a pleasure to host. She was willing, cheerful, hard working and very good with the horses. She came along with me to a competition as a groom and was a huge help. Very calm and organised. We really enjoyed having Victoria to stay.

We stayed with Luka for the last week of the season. Luka was immediately very welcoming and accommodating and we had a great week. I had been sick and Luka helped me navigate the Croatian doctors and took me into town to help sort it out. The work was easy and well explained. In our free time we were able to chill out in the beach, swim and use the camp ground facilities. Dan even tried windsurfing when the conditions were right. The whole team was fantastic and we shared desserts from home and always had someone to chat to. As a first Workaway experience, this was great.

Our experience in Slovenia was incredible: we initially planned to stay for just one month, but then we decided to stay for two. From day one, Andrej, his parents, and the entire staff gave us an excellent welcome, making us feel part of the company. The accommodation, just a short walk from the workplace, was perfect: we had an entire house at our disposal with every comfort! We also had a car available every weekend to explore the country, which was a great advantage. If you choose this Workaway, you should know that there is work to be done here, and often it could be hard work: it is not a classic Workaway where you will be working for a family, but rather a company that will be waiting for you with many tasks to perform (office work, gardening, and above all, putting up large advertising billboards). In any case, every task will always be explained to you kindly and patiently. In this regard, special mention must be made of Tomo, Kotar, Lidija, and above all Sara, with whom we had excellent communication even before departure. Thank you for all, our Slovenian friends, we will always carry you in our hearts. We wait for u in Italy!!

I had such a lovely experience staying with this family on 🌴 Panglao Island! They are very kind and welcoming people, and their home is beautiful and comfortable 🏡. The food was always super delicious 😋, and I honestly can’t say anything negative about my stay. The children are so sweet, open, and full of joy 💕. Panglao itself is a beautiful island with amazing beaches 🌊 – I can absolutely recommend staying with this family! 🌞✨

Everything was just perfect! - Denzel is a wonderful person, polite, attentive and equally easy-going and pleasant to work with. His strengths clearly lie in solving practical tasks (construction, planning) in an imaginative, clever and knowledgeable way. If there is something he does not know or cannot do himself right away, he finds out in no time at all and knows how to put the new information into practice immediately. He is ambitious, very thorough and detail-oriented (Me: ‘You don't have to build that to last forever, Denzel!’ :-)). On the other hand, he has really great ideas, also outside the box, which he adapts to the circumstances and possibilities on site. I particularly enjoyed that he could and would work on his own , but equally we were able to plan and work together well and very constructively. Outside of work, we had good conversations, ranging from profound to entertaining. I got to know Denzel as a reliable, interested and interesting person and would be happy to welcome him back to my house anytime!

I’ve been with María, Luis, Leo, Jara and Julia for two months, it was my first experience abroad and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. María and Luis were extremely kind and welcoming and Leo, Jara and Julia, the kids, also immediately included me in their routine. I bonded with all of them in little to no time and felt from the start a really good vibe with the whole family. They live in a beautiful and well connected house close to Murcia so it’s easy to go by bus to visit the city; I loved this experience, I had fun playing with the kids and learning the language, María speaks English and Italian so at the beginning I wasn’t completely lost, the kids were really amazing in including me and trying to make me understand when I didn’t know some words, and Luis also while talking only Spanish was amazing in making himself clear. Overall it is a super sweet family, full of life and surrounded by friends and relatives; Leo, Jara y Julia are all well behaved, smart and curious about everything, it’s been amazing for me spending time and playing with them. I am grateful for the time I spend with this family, and really happy with having learned a new language in such an amazing context. I miss you all!!!

Hi, I had the joy of hosting Amelie for two weeks. We got along very well, as I found her a considerate and caring person. We shared a nice time together, cooking and going for yoga, which is an interest of both of us. I found communication with her easy, as she was honest and at the same time caring in her words. What also made our communication easy, was that she was very reliable, I knew she would do what we had agreed on and begin at the planned time. During her time here it felt a bit like the kitchen was cleaning itself, as she had an eye for what was need, self going enough to just do it. She was solution focused and tried to find ways to make things work, rather than complaining. Besides the tasks we discussed before she came, she helped me with other tasks in a good way, so I found here willing to do that extra to make the experience great. I will miss having her around, as she was both pleasant and positive company.

Wow, it was my first time staying with a Kiwi family, and I really loved it! Their home is in a great location , super close to little hikes and the town centre. They even lent me a bike so I could get around more easily. They were always helping me find new spots to visit and even lent me lots of gear for camping. Such an open and generous family! They were also really flexible with work hours, very polite, and tidy. I mostly helped out with garden tasks, which were simple and enjoyable. My room was super clean and comfy, and I really liked the house too, as I already told you, family!:) They’re a lovely family, and I’d happily stay with them again anytime. Big hugs to all three of you 💚
