This was my first workaway experience and I found this home to be a good first experience. The host is very passionate about his Karen heritage and about the elephant sanctuary. Through his stories, I learned a lot about the Karen Tribe. His family welcomed me in their house and i was able to eat lunch and dinner together sometimes. Also, the host trusted me to give me freedom to plan my own IT projects for the elephant sanctuary. Because of this, I was able to contribute exactly how I wanted and the host was very grateful for my work.

What a pleasure to meet Renata, Matija and their lovely family. My family and I spent several weeks in Lake Bled during September and we had a lot of fun visiting Renata and Matija's farm. Our main work was in their orchard and vegetable patch: some weeding, net care and fruit picking. Renata and Matija, and their lovely daughters, were a pleasure to spend time with. Truly warm, genuine, honest and inspiring people. Both our family's children enjoyed playing games together. Renata and Matija were very helpful in providing advice for us regarding interesting places to visit in the surrounding area. They were very generous with their time, suggestions, and meals. We learned much about the Slovenian way of life and had a much richer time in Slovenia as a consequence. Highly recommend!

We just spent a wonderful week with Antonio and Marcello, and we absolutely loved our experience. Every morning, we worked cutting and preparing the olive branches for the upcoming harvest, and it felt truly meaningful. The small apartment where we stayed was just perfect for us — cozy, comfortable, and peaceful. Every afternoon, we explored the beautiful villages in the surrounding area, and each day felt like a gift. Our hosts were generous, kind, and full of life. We’re already planning to come back soon from Canada to visit them again. These were unforgettable, magical days that will stay in our hearts forever. We truly hope that other volunteers will come and help them continue their wonderful small-scale olive farming project. The amount of work was perfectly balanced — rewarding but never overwhelming.

Amritani was our first volunteer this year and she was a lifesaver! Thoughtful, intelligent, and fun person that took care of our property and animals like her own. She was great to communicate with before and during her stay and very clear about what she needed and how everything was going via text and photos. Our dog Kiko loved all the daily hikes and beach walks with Amritani and Kiko was happy as can be! She’s also a great cook and left me a surprise delicious meal in the fridge. And the house was spotless when she left (not an easy task in the forest!) We highly recommend our new friend, Amritani, and she’s always welcome here, there, or anywhere!

Lu is a sweet and kind person. She is very respectful and always ready to help. She helped with cleaning and organizing the association's spaces. It was a shame that it was only at the end of her stay that we realized the fantastic quality of her graphic work, but even so, she found time to leave us a banner she designed for one of our projects. It was wonderful to have her with us. We felt like she was part of the family!!! Lu, I hope you come back some day so I can show you a little more of what wasn't possible this time <3

Staying with Anni and Oli was an absolute joy! From the very first moment, we felt so warmly welcomed and comfortable. Their kindness, openness, and sense of humor made our two weeks with them truly special. We really enjoyed the time spent together — talking, playing games, laughing, and even doing tasks like stacking wood and cleaning. Everything felt easy and fun thanks to their great energy. Their place is full of love, not only from them but also from all the wonderful animals — Nelson, Alpha, Mali, Fritz and Fred, Trudi, the chickens, and the sheep. We’ll definitely miss being surrounded by so many cuddly friends! Anni and Oli are two incredibly kind and genuine people, and we’re very grateful to have met them. If you get the chance to stay with them, don’t hesitate — you’ll have a wonderful experience!

2 weeks passed by quickly and its time for you to move to your next plan. It was truly enjoyable hosting you and teaching the many new skills and information. Marti is a quick learner and is ever so helpful. Although at first the warm and humid weather was a challenge to him, he quickly adapted and managed. We learnt about each other's country and languages. Marti loves all the local food, even the spicy ones. It was really fun having Marti around and if you come by this way again, you can always come by and stay with us again..! Hasta la Vista

My words can hardly describe what a wonderful time I had with Juanvi in Valencia. We did small renovations together, mostly in the mornings. While doing so, we listened to good music and had a lot of fun, because Juanvi is one of the funniest people I know ( good humour) I have laughed more this week than I have in a long time ( and I am in general a person that loves to laugh) During the renovation work, I also learned about techniques I hadn't used before and was able to try them out. That was cool. I furthermore felt like I was being taken seriously (all the time) as we considered and planned the next steps of our work. I think it's also simply due to Juanvi's personality. He's such a thoughtful, caring, and feminist person. He treats people, not just the workawayers who work with him, with so much respect and respects people's boundaries with great care. I just felt so comfortable. Furthermore, he's a fantastic cook. He prepared me meals that were more delicious than I've ever had in any restaurant in Valencia. But I also have to mention all the little touches that complete the picture of my stay. When I arrived at Juanvi's, work clothes were already waiting for me, which I could wear while working so I wouldn't get my own clothes dirty. A nice room and fresh towels were also provided. After work, or even before, I had a few times the opportunity to go to the mountains with Juanvi. This way, I got to know places that would have been difficult to reach without a car (I traveled without one). I love being in nature and am very grateful to him for this opportunity. I was also lucky enough to meet a wonderful friend of his and his trail running group, which gave me the opportunity to practice speaking Spanish. I simply enjoyed the exchange. Juanvi thank you very much for this great time. You are always welcome in Germany, Julia

I spent 4 relaxed, enjoyable, and educational weeks with Ahmad and the team at the bamboo village near Sungai Siput in Perak. It was a privilege to do so because of their collective laudable and earnest interest in sharing their expertise around construction of many products from bamboo. My time felt more like I was being sponsored to take part in an on-the-job training or a workshop, and the workload was light, the emphasis so much on simply letting me learn and help out at my own pace that I often had to proactively ask to try and do some bits myself, rather than simply watching and asking questions. During my time at the bamboo village I helped and observed the retrofit of a bicycle to a bamboo frame, the construction of a sidecar for the bike, the beginning of the construction of a car shelter, and helped on a few odd extra bits. I drilled holes, carved joins, painted patterns, hammered pins, added bindings, cut lengths to measure, and worked together with the team on the design specifics for the more novel projects. There is so much variety to what you might do here and your experience will depend on the time of year and the projects ongoing. Many parts of bamboo construction require practice and skill, so a longer term investment in this workaway is advised or you will have barely begun by the time you leave. Ahmad was a wonderful host. Kind, knowledgeable, and genuine, and I hope to one day meet him again. A special mention also for Husairi, the workshop foreman, who also spoke excellent English and spent a lot of time with me, explaining techniques, discussing Malaysian culture, and making sure I was okay! The work schedule is relaxed, and I appreciated Ahmad being clear at the start regarding the morning work hours, and having afternoons and weekends off. I often continued to volunteer in the afternoons and weekends because I was interested in the bamboo more than any alternatives, but it was valuable to have the option to take time off validated - something I took advantage of by taking a weekend trip to the Cameron Highlands, agreeing some slightly adjusted hours to accommodate. I was originally scheduled for only 2 weeks, but extended to 4 as the time spent was so worthwhile, and there was no issue doing this. The accomodation and cooking facilities are basic, but serviceable. Not quite as rural as being on a farm, the onsite workshop dorm still means cold showers, no WiFi, no A/C, and a variety of bugs to keep you company, including plenty of mosquitoes. There is a washing machine for clothes. Ahmad provides a stipend for purchasing food etc which you then sort out yourself. Options were limited for a veggie like myself, but I got by. The team generously lent me a scooter, an essential tool out in this rural location if you want to get anywhere in a hurry, though a bicycle is available also and could serve for some local groceries and restaurants. The roti canai place just 200 m from the bamboo village entrance is a great breakfast spot! Aside from the bamboo, Ahmad is very keen on helping you see the local community, and took me to 2 different local markets, 2 different weddings, and on 2 ocassions I also had the privilege to visit the homes of people in the local community - be careful with those beehives Husairi! I was also able to visit the markets myself using the scooter on a number of occasions, and a scooter ride to the train station also facilitated a day trip to Kuala Kangsar. The bamboo village is about 20 minutes by vehicle from Sungai Siput and, in terms of arriving and departing, I was lucky enough that members of the team were able to retrieve me and deliver me to the train station. I was the only volunteer during my time at the village, so the evenings could be a bit quiet and lonely. However, at other times of the year, I've heard there can be many volunteers, which would shift the atmosphere considerably in the evenings. Being the only volunteer however meant incredibly personalised time with the team and overall my experience was rich and fulfilling. Nevertheless, as it was a quiet period, there were some days where I didn't have much to do, so a relaxed, unhurried attitude is essential. In terms of advice, I'd bring toilet paper, mosquito stuff, gloves (to avoid blisters), and plenty of mobile data! A head torch was useful as well when cooking after sunset as the kitchen light benefits from some supplementary illumination. Overall I'd thoroughly recommend this relaxed, technical volunteering opportunity if you have any interest in learning about bamboo and construction using it.

My experience with Alice and her family was simply amazing !! She came to pick me up at the airport and I felt immediately like I joined a friend on the island... and when I met the entire family, they made me feel like home right away ! The house in Minorca is spectacular, a typical one, very spacious with a beautiful garden. Me and Alice coordinated perfectly on the things to be done and she left me a lot of time to explore the island (which I loved!) also on my own . Everything was smooth and spontaneous... the atmosphere was always funny ! Her 15 and 18 sons were adorable, super easy to get along with, clean and responsible. Not to mention Alice's dad : so funny to be around and very cultured ! I would recommend an experience with them "big time" ! Thanks..........not only for hosting me..... but mostly for letting me be myself... the most precious thing.

This was Andrea/Andy's first WorkAway and she did very well! In 2 weeks she helped us sand/clean/paint our balcony and the result is very nice! She is very easy to host, very helpful and cheerful. With a little advice she could very easily work independently. We really enjoyed her company. Our dogs loved her and she would voluntarily take them on a walk through the forest. Thank you again! Love Paul & Yvonne

We had a lovely experience with Dany and Grace. We really enjoyed getting to know them and happily extended their stay. They were with us for a month and would be welcome back any time. They are respectful, thoughtful, hardworking and great communicators. They willingly tackled a wide range of work including gardening, digging holes, detailing cars and a motor bike and repainting furniture. They demonstrated great persistence and attention to detail. We also enjoyed sharing some special places and experiences here on Magnetic Island. We highly recommend Dany and Grace, their cheery presence and timely help will be missed.

First of all, I want to say that I am grateful for the 14 days experience. Gati is an amazing host, teacher and person. Her family is calm, kind and always in a good mood. 🩷 The accommodation she provided me was clean, cozy, with wifi, I always got a big portion of Makan - I tasted probably everything I could. She is very generous. 🙏 As for the program, you learn with private teachers in homes, where you teach one or more children or a group according to their needs. 🫶 I had the opportunity to go to elementary school, high school and university. Teach and get to know children. 🌈 I had the opportunity to visit two weddings and in my free time go to nature or to a temple. 🐒 This experience me: more gratitude, humility and positive energy. I recommend trying it. 🙏 You will meet the Gati family, neighbors, friends, teachers, taste a lot of food, see things that we don't have in Europe or outside of Europe. 🌸 Thank you.🩷 See youu soon 🫶

Claire and Adrien were excellent to have visit. They were dedicated to volunteering, mature and professional in their approach, fun and really interesting to have stay, and brought valuable life skills and experience. I am most apprectiave of their contribution, both to our home garden but also the community projects of Denmark Commuinty Garden and the Sanctuary cultural facility. They also readily joined in community events. I highly recommend them for any opportunity of their choice.

This was my first Workaway experience, and I’m so grateful I got to have it at Amanda’s! I stayed there for a little over five weeks — first as a Workawayer, then as a house and pet sitter — looking after her beautiful animals: two dogs, Bonnie and Ruby, and two cats, Leo and Spooky. Amanda is a strong, beautiful soul; we shared many great conversations, and I truly appreciated her caring nature. She lives with her son, Ollie, who will definitely become your friend if you cook him some bolognese! She also often takes care of rescued baby possums — when I was there, I got to meet (and cuddle!) the adorable Gumnut, the cutest addition to the family. The tasks are varied (basically, you’ll take care of the house and property, which gives a very satisfying feeling), and Amanda is super fair about how you want to organise your time — which makes it easy to make the most of the surroundings during your free hours. As a Workawayer, you’ll stay in a very comfortable caravan; as a house/pet sitter, you get to move into Amanda’s suite (to sleep with Bonnie and Ruby — who loooooove being walked around the neighbourhood), which is probably the most beautiful bedroom I’ve ever seen! The place is gorgeous: if you’re looking for peace and want to be surrounded by nature, yet live only 15–25 minutes from the ocean, cute markets (Eumundi and Yandina), and a vibrant town (Noosa), Amanda’s will be heaven for you. Finally, on the property, you’ll meet Gaia, Miranda, and Josh, who live in a separate caravan and tiny house. In other words, you’ll be surrounded by wonderful human beings (including Amanda and Ollie, in case it was not clear) who’ll make you feel part of a loving little community. Thank you again so much for this wonderful month — I’m already missing you all!

Barbara and Brian are fantastic people. Unfortunately, I was only able to spend 2 weeks with them, but even in such a short time, I really liked them. They were my first hosts, and they made sure that I had a great experience. I will miss the meals and conversations together. The meals were like a gastronomic adventure for me, everything was delicious, and the good company made it even better. Brian and I worked together a lot, I really respect him for his knowledge and experience, and by the end we became good friends. I hope we see each other again. Take care of yourselves!

Our one week at Hadassah and Jacks home was amazing. They were really welcoming and open. We had a great time working at their beautiful garden and the time flew by. Hadassah always gave us great instructions and told us exactly what and why she wanted us to do certain things. The working at the school garden was a great and enriching experience. We had really good food and talks! Thank you, wishing you all the best!
