    ABOUT US:

Established in 2013, our journey began with a small guesthouse and community activities in and around Sungai Siput, Perak. Although we are a small business but somehow or rather, we are the leading bamboo enterprise in the country. We are passionate about promoting bamboo as a sustainable resource and fostering community engagement. With the vision of a social enterprise, we invite local villagers and volunteers to join us in cultivating a shared love for this remarkable plant.

At our compound, we offer comprehensive training and workshops covering all aspects of bamboo—from planting and harvesting to treatment, furniture making, and construction. We also provide consultancy services for fellow bamboo entrepreneurs, structural engineers, designers, and architects, guiding them in the effective and sustainable use of bamboo.

Our offerings include bamboo seeds and seedlings for plantation and landscaping, treated bamboo poles for construction, and crafted products like bamboo bikes, furniture and musical instruments. We also provide construction services for various structures, including gazebos, chalets, villas, etc.

Our workshop is a hub of creativity, where we craft our products. As lovers of this green gold, our place cultivates bamboo from A to Z, from growing, harvesting, treating and crafting/building. There is also a nursery with many different species of bamboo for us to explore and a little bamboo farm that houses 36 species of Bamboo surrounding our compound. This space is not just for work; it also serves as a living environment for some of our staff and doubles as a guesthouse for those eager to learn about bamboo. We nurture the entire lifecycle of bamboo and generously share our knowledge and skills with passionate volunteers.

Nestled in the heart of Perak, we are dedicated to revitalizing our community through sustainable practices and the versatile art of bamboo crafting and construction. After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were excited to reopen our doors and embark on new initiatives that blend traditional craftsmanship with community engagement. Our mission is to empower local villagers, inspire creativity, and foster a deep appreciation for bamboo as a sustainable resource.

    CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS:

This humble village is a majority Malay-muslim community, therefore, modesty is key, especially with dressing. We would appreciate it if you wore appropriate modest clothing, mosquitos are another reason to cover up. Sleeveless tops and shorts for female are inadvisable.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES are prohibited with no compromise — volunteers caught with alcoholic beverages within our base will have their volunteer program terminated and will be asked to leave immediately.

Our village is very welcoming and hospitable, and we are excited to invite foreigners to get a taste of our culture.
Locals speak decent English and are better at understanding English. Getting engaged with them is a good way to learn basic Malay and they are very happy to teach you some (and it’s easy to pick up).

We run an official training facility for bamboo furniture constructions in Malaysia. We have experience in working internationally with other bamboo lovers and are very keen to share our knowledge with our volunteers. Seasonally, we have certified workshops which our volunteers could participate for FREE!

Our sanctuary is located in a small Malaysian village so the experience you will get will be an authentic insight into our culture — it is a simple life here of doing simple things, supplemented by 30% more oxygen in the air produced by the bamboo. This patient, deep focus is a value that one can learn from the simple life here and are very much needed in practicing effective communal living and cultivating virtue and patience throughout one's life.

We often collaborate with the Orang asli, our Malaysian indigenous tribes who live in the jungle not far from us.

This exciting project involves transforming a complex of buildings wherefore the renovation will be carried out in several phases as we work to secure funding.

Adjacent to this space, we will create an arts and crafts area designed to host trainees, volunteers, guests, and lecturers. This multifunctional area will also serve as a venue for local and international workshops, educational programs, and the production of our bamboo bikes, furniture, and musical instruments.

    Renovation Work Includes:

    - general property maintenance
    - carpentry tasks
    - building furniture from bamboo
    - painting (walls, ceilings, etc.)
    - cleaning
    - demolition tasks
    - constructing new walls and other elements using bamboo

If you have skills related to bamboo craftsmanship, that would be a fantastic asset!
Additionally, we are looking for artists interested in creating one or two large wall paintings or crafting bamboo decorations and artworks to enhance our space.

    OTHER:

COMMUNITY LIVING: We require a guide book which that puts communal living models to practice. You can help us add more knowledge. When you first arrive read the guide and you can get an overview of what’s currently going on and what you can help with. We still need signs and descriptions which will help new volunteers, staff and visitors to navigate through our place and understand our practice.

GARDEN/COMPOST: We already have a bamboo nursery and a few fruit trees, lemongrass, etc. You can help us water the plants and take care of the compost. If you have particular interest in organic and permaculture gardening you’re very welcome to share your knowledge with us and help us develop our gardens.

NATURAL BUILDINGS: You have the opportunity learn more about bamboo construction and learn and get involved. We build furniture, houses, bikes, etc.

LANGUAGE EXCHANGE: A very beautiful way to engage with our local villagers is to set up a language exchange where volunteers can teach a group their native language in exchange to learn Malay. We believe setting up a language exchange routine would be a very beautiful way to experience our local culture.

WORKSHOPS: If you have specific skills to share to a group you can help us offer workshops which are open to locals for free or based on donation. It can be anything from earth care to natural crafts. You can refer to previous workshops in the guide book but also put your new workshop into the book so new volunteers can continue running it.

EVENTS: We’d like to promote the homestay and our community by organizing events. These can be bigger, for a weekend or just one day. Whatever concept you’d like to have for your event, we’ll try to accommodate your idea (concerts, open mic, hand crafts, natural cosmetics, cooking, etc.).

PROMOTION: To make our project more accessible to others we’re relying on updating our social media and website regularly. You can help us organize photos and content for that and also develop ideas about how to promote events within the local area. The Sunday market could be a good place for example.

BAMBOO BAND: We have various instruments made from bamboo and some of our staff are really talented musicians. Our dream is to put together a bamboo band.

ART PROJECT: Spread your creative wings and decorate our place with your art. We’d like to show the different potential that bamboo and other natural resources have.

Please be aware that our place is being renovated at the moment. Which means there will be some dirt and noise during working hours although we try to keep everything tidy and clean all together.

  • Algo mais...

    Algo mais...

Volunteers have their off day on the weekends. We may ask you to work on weekends depending on events but will replace the off days.

Our place is some 20 minutes away from Kuala Kangsar, the royal town of Perak state, where the Sultan's palace is. Kuala Kangsar at at one time was the British administrative district, many tourist attractions, historical landmarks. Ipoh is 45 minutes away. We have a 4WD vehicle, a motorcycle and a few bamboo bikes to move around with. At times we also conduct leisure exploration into the jungle, night markets and aboriginal villages.

Past volunteers have found it interesting to interact with villagers, sample foods at nearby stalls, scavenging for vegetables, fruits and ingredients to cook wit, as well as bambooworking as volunteers have a whole workshop at their disposal and we provide the materials. We encourage these sort of social and creative activities and would not prefer volunteers to spend a lot of time in their rooms and not participating in the happenings of our community and the village.
