Hi! We are Beth & Jim, a young British couple from the Peak District in England who love the outdoors, wildlife and many outdoor adventurous activities. We are currently taking a career break to explore the world, meet new people, & experience new cultures. Our aim is to be travelers, not just tourists; so that we can give back as much as we take from the places we visit. Our motivation is to leave places a little brighter than we found them, hopefully enriching our own lives too.

Living in the Peak District put us at the heart of the UK's first National Park, giving us fantastic access to places we could enjoy most of our favourite activities. However, with demanding & busy work schedules taking us both across the country and the world, we found little satisfaction in our jobs and even less opportunity to pursue our own passions. And so we have both quit our jobs in the UK to embark on a world travelling adventure with no clear route or destination, going anywhere the wind takes us, living life in the slow lane.

We are both new to Workaway, but are both super excited by the opportunity it can bring us as travelers and the communities we visit. We look forward to meeting new people, helping and inspiring others soon!

    A little bit about Beth...

On this travel adventure I want to challenge myself and learn new skills - doing this by saying yes to new opportunity and although may have little experience, I am full of a can-do attitude and happy to get my hands dirty. I work hard within a team and also happy to work alone. I seek adventure and love high-adrenaline sports, whilst I am away I would like to be able to do a bungy-jump, sky-dive and any other new extreme sports to me! I love animals and discovering new wildlife, which is something I'd love to be able to see and learn more about through work away and on my travels. Seeing an animal always puts a smile on my face. I also love exploring new foods and enjoy cooking - i'd love to be able to take some new recipes back home to the UK with me.

I am also an ex-professional cyclist, mad about bike racing, cycle touring routes and coaching off-road disciplines of the sport itself too - mountain biking and cyclo-cross. I am a qualified cycle coach and mountain bike guide who previously worked for British Cycling as a Talent Development Coach nurturing young talent and passing on my skills and knowledge to help riders develop and learn. I also previously worked for Warner Brothers Discovery Sports (yes the same company who produced Bugs Bunny!) travelling the world delivering the World Cup Mountain Bike Series - the highest level of the sport's major sporting events in an operational role, dealing with teams and athletes from all corners of the globe. So I am pretty happy doing admin with an organised spreadsheet! Through workaway I wish to embark on new challenges whilst using my transferable skills and knowledge to help others too.

    A little about Jim...

I've always been a bit of an adventurous spirit. To me there's no feeling better than the excitement of setting out at the start of an expedition (or even just a day trip!) Whether it be rock climbing, paddle-sport, hiking, surfing, cycling, running or camping. In the outdoors I considers myself a jack of all trades, master of none.

I always knew I would be happier outside, which is why when it came time to choose what I wanted to do for work I decided to become an Outdoor Instructor. My hope being that it would enable me to pursue my passions and make a living at the same time. However, it was only after completing my training that I learned of the joy to be found in introducing others to new environments and experiences, some of which they had never even dreamed of before. Nowadays in work I find more satisfaction in helping others find their own genuine adventures rather than pursuing my own.

But I'm not all about having adventures 24/7. My other interests include history, the natural world, and creative projects too - the biggest of which was converting a VW Transporter into a camper van. I hope that through Workaway I can use my skills, knowledge and passions to broaden my horizons whilst leaving a place better off for my stay.

Please feel free to reach out to us to ask questions at any time and we look forward to speaking with you soon.

    Beth's skills...

I have studied Sports Business Management at The University of Worcester in England, covering many topics from sport development, marketing, event operations, sponsorship and business modules. Whilst at University I also had a part-time job and I was also training for my sport of cycling, this gave me excellent organisation skills and time management to ensure I could complete all tasks on time.
As a cycling coach I am able to work with lots of different personalities, making me versatile and an approachable person to young riders who is able to listen and offer valuable advice when this is required.
When I was racing full-time I was very keen on Vlogging to keep my family and supporters at home updated with what I was up to, I enjoy taking pictures and videos and cropping these together to make videos on my small you tube channel.
During the covid lock down I also bought a Volkswagen van and converted this to a camper van, with help from a few people to install big items, I designed the conversion and helped fit parts in.
I enjoy cooking and baking too, creating some awesome birthday cakes, hosted friends and family round for dinner and can also make a killer halloween themed punch bowl which went down a treat this past halloween party. I am a social person and enjoy a get together at the pub, meeting new people and having an enjoyable evening.
With all this, I can speak basic french along with fluent English, I would love it if i can develop this language skill in the future and also learn a new sport whilst I away such as surfing!

    Jim's skills...

I've had lots of jobs during my working life so far: Waiter & barman, barista, cheese maker & dairy farmer, technical sports equipment salesman, & Outdoor Instructor. But growing up I always thought I wanted to have a career as an Architect, I even spent a brief time at The University of Greenwich in London studying Architecture before later deciding it wasn't for me. However, for many years throughout my schooling I focused heavily on art and design. Although these days they are not skills I use very often, I still have a keen artistic eye & an appreciation for details.
This was particularly useful when I was converting my VW Transporter into a camper van as a tool to help facilitate my adventures. The drawings and design I drew myself first by hand then later with a free CAD program I found online. When it came time to build I did everything myself from scratch: Cutting out the bulkhead, fitting windows, sound proofing and insulating, wiring in the 12V electricity system, & installing the rock 'n' roll bed.
My aptitude for DIY most certainly comes from my parents. Since about the age of six I can remember them both renovating the family home. And from the age of maybe eight or nine I would get involved first with a paint brush, then a screwdriver, and later power tools. So it's safe to say I definitely know my way around a jigsaw or angle grinder. These experiences have also come in handy in my career as an Outdoor Instructor, doing everything from site work to maintain the grounds at the centre, or repairing kit like surfboards and wetsuits.
However the skills most often utilised in my work are my people skills. I learned quickly that be an effective facilitator, instructor, teacher, or coach requires patience and experience. You don't get the balance right every time; but there is a huge amount of joy to be found in helping others to succeed either as a team, or in their personal endevours.
I have found that no one type of person or group is easier to work with than another, they are just different. Whether it be a group of graduates on a corporate development away trip, or a bunch of kiddies on a holiday camp. I have no preference, I just appreciate the variety.
To work as an outdoor leader in the UK there are lots of different qualifications one must attain before being able to work on specific activities. I have worked hard to develop my skills in a range of different sports and environments. I have qualified as: a Mountain Leader (ML), Paddle-sport Touring Leader (this enables me to lead groups in various paddle craft up to 500m off-shore & on up to Grade 2 moving water), Beach Lifeguard, I have trained to be a Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI), and I also hold an Outdoor First Aid Certificate.
My role in my most recent job was to support operations management and take part in delivery of expeditions across the UK and internationally. Through this I have gained invaluable experience of logistical planning, the value of good communication in both large and small dynamic teams, and to always expect the unexpected. My proudest achievement in this role was taking the lead on a unique coast to coast expedition across the Scottish Highlands with an international school by foot and by canoe. I took charge of everything from the conception of the expedition , liaising with the client, planning the logistics, recceing the route, and leading the expedition itself. It was by far the most rewarding work I have done in my life. In part due to my oversight of the whole project, but mostly because of the scenes of joy and satisfaction among the students at the end of the trip.
